    This paper presents an overview of the role played by the sea in the variolls cosmogonies and cosmographies of the ancient Semitic peoples. It also takes into consideration the function of the Sea from the standpoint of the Semitic holy books. This is followed by a discussion of a number of Maltese and Arabic (classical alld dialectal) proverbs from a number of Mediterranean countries with a view to assessing the various connotations associated with the sea, and to what extent these reflect the Semitic mythological and monotheistic heritage.peer-reviewe

    Οἱ παῖδες Ἄγαρ ἀθέου is the phrase used by the mid-12th-century anonymous poet exiled on Melitogaudos to describe his neighbours on the island. As the publication of the long lament by this poet did not give much attention to his unneighbourly neighbours, it is the object of this communication to take a closer look at this community, addressing the related questions of who, when and under what conditions were they there, in the light of what was happening at the time in Sicily, and to the South, in North Africa. We conclude with a hypothetical reconstruction of developments in Malta during the Arab period.peer-reviewe

    Water turned into wine : comparing and contrasting classical Arabic, Lebanese, Moroccan and Maltese versions

    Typologically, the modem Maltese language is poised between the Arabic dialectal bundle, on the one hand, and Romance languages, particularly Sicilian and Italian, on the other. Moreover, Maltese is unevenly poised between eastern and western dialectal varieties of Arabic, with a considerable inclination towards the Maghribi dialects. One way of observing the varying degrees of correspondence between Maltese and Arabic is to compare and contrast Arabic (Classical, Lebanese, and Moroccan) and Maltese translations of a literary text, in this case, an excerpt from the Gospel of St. John. Lebanese and Moroccan represent eastern and western Arabic typologies respectively. The arbitrary choice of a relatively short excerpt - John 2: 1-12 - precludes any accurate pronouncements about the areal affiliationls of the Arabic element in Maltese. The aim of this study is limited to the consideration of issues of fonnal correspondence and translation equivalence via the textual segmentation of the four versions under consideration.peer-reviewe

    Unrecognizable Arabic-Maltese : the innovative Maltese element in the Maltese language

    The takeover of the Maltese archipelago by Norman Sicily in the late eleventh century paved the way for the definitive severance of ties, two centuries later, between the then embryonic Maltese language and its acrolect, Arabic. However, although Malta's political, social and religious destinies were bound to be irrevocably dictated by successive European powers, linguistically the situation was to develop otherwise. The relative isolation from Malta's centres of power of the few thousands of the Maltese populace, mainly peasants and fishermen, led to a situation in which the early Maltese language had no other alternative but to fend for itself in finding ways which guaranteed its existence and survival in time.This was achieved by a remarkable balancing act which saw the Maltese language, on the one hand retaining the conservative elements from the previous contacts with the urban centres in the Maghreb and elsewhere,) and on the other, proceeding'towards the reinterpretation of its native elements to cater for Malta's new exigencies. This reinterpretation of linguistic facts affected all levels of language. The resulting "Maltese" component collocates most naturally with the other elements making up the Maltese language, predominantly Arabic, Italian (especially in its, Sicilian variety) and, much later, English. This short lexicological study analyzes a number of local linguistic developments which, notwithstanding their discrete Arabic elements, find no reflexes in the Arabic language. The analysis is based upon the preface of a Maltese publication produced in 2001 by the Academy of the Maltese Language.peer-reviewe

    A Mendelian randomization study of the causal association between anxiety phenotypes and schizophrenia

    Schizophrenia shows a genetic correlation with both anxiety disorder and neuroticism, a trait strongly associated with anxiety. However, genetic correlations do not discern causality from genetic confounding. We therefore aimed to investigate whether anxiety-related phenotypes lie on the causal pathway to schizophrenia using Mendelian randomization (MR). Four MR methods, each with different assumptions regarding instrument validity, were used to investigate casual associations of anxiety and neuroticism related phenotypes on schizophrenia, and vice versa: inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median, weighted mode, and, when appropriate, MR Egger regression. MR provided evidence of a causal effect of neuroticism on schizophrenia (IVW odds ratio [OR]: 1.33, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.12-1.59), but only weak evidence of a causal effect of anxiety on schizophrenia (IVW OR: 1.10, 95% CI: 1.01-1.19). There was also evidence of a causal association from schizophrenia liability to anxiety disorder (IVW OR: 1.28, 95% CI: 1.18-1.39) and worry (IVW beta: 0.05, 95% CI: 0.03-0.07), but effect estimates from schizophrenia to neuroticism were inconsistent in the main analysis. The evidence of neuroticism increasing schizophrenia risk provided by our results supports future efforts to evaluate neuroticism- or anxiety-based therapies to prevent onset of psychotic disorders

    Association of copy number variation across the genome with neuropsychiatric traits in the general population

    Copy number variants (CNVs) are associated with psychiatric conditions in clinical populations. The relationship between rare CNV burden and neuropsychiatric traits in young, general populations is underexplored. 6807 children from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) were studied. CNVs were inferred from SNP-array data using PennCNV. After excluding children with known candidate CNVs for schizophrenia, rare (<1%) CNV burden (total number of genes affected by CNVs, total length of CNVs, and largest CNV carried) was analysed in relation to: psychotic experiences (PEs) and anxiety/depression in adolescence; autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), ASD and ADHD traits, and cognitive measures during childhood. Outcomes were also assessed in relation to known schizophrenia CNVs. The number of genes affected by rare CNVs was associated with a continuous measure of ASD: the standardised mean difference [SMD] per gene affected was increased by 0.018 [95%CI 0.011,0.025], p=3e-07 for duplications and by 0.021 [95%CI 0.010, 0.032], p=1e-04 for deletions. In line with published results on educational attainment in ALSPAC, IQ was associated with CNV burden: the SMD per gene affected was -0.017 [95%CI -0.025,-0.008] p=1e-04 for duplications and -0.023 [95%CI -0.037, -0.009], p=0.002 for deletions. Associations were also observed for measures of coherence, attention, memory, and social cognition. Schizophrenia-associated deletions were associated with IQ (SMD: -0.617 [95%CI -0.936,-0.298], p=2e-04), but not with PEs or other traits. We found that rare CNV burden and known schizophrenia candidate CNVs are associated with neuropsychiatric phenotypes in a non-clinically ascertained sample of young people

    Foot pain and foot health in an educated population of adults: results from the Glasgow Caledonian University Alumni Foot Health Survey

    Abstract Background Foot pain is common amongst the general population and impacts negatively on physical function and quality of life. Associations between personal health characteristics, lifestyle/behaviour factors and foot pain have been studied; however, the role of wider determinants of health on foot pain have received relatively little attention. Objectives of this study are i) to describe foot pain and foot health characteristics in an educated population of adults; ii) to explore associations between moderate-to-severe foot pain and a variety of factors including gender, age, medical conditions/co-morbidity/multi-morbidity, key indicators of general health, foot pathologies, and social determinants of health; and iii) to evaluate associations between moderate-to-severe foot pain and foot function, foot health and health-related quality-of-life. Methods Between February and March 2018, Glasgow Caledonian University Alumni with a working email address were invited to participate in the cross-sectional electronic survey (anonymously) by email via the Glasgow Caledonian University Alumni Office. The survey was constructed using the REDCap secure web online survey application and sought information on presence/absence of moderate-to-severe foot pain, patient characteristics (age, body mass index, socioeconomic status, occupation class, comorbidities, and foot pathologies). Prevalence data were expressed as absolute frequencies and percentages. Multivariate logistic and linear regressions were undertaken to identify associations 1) between independent variables and moderate-to-severe foot pain, and 2) between moderate-to-severe foot pain and foot function, foot health and health-related quality of life. Results Of 50,228 invitations distributed, there were 7707 unique views and 593 valid completions (median age [inter-quartile range] 42 [31–52], 67.3% female) of the survey (7.7% response rate). The sample was comprised predominantly of white Scottish/British (89.4%) working age adults (95%), the majority of whom were overweight or obese (57.9%), and in either full-time or part-time employment (82.5%) as professionals (72.5%). Over two-thirds (68.5%) of the sample were classified in the highest 6 deciles (most affluent) of social deprivation. Moderate-to-severe foot pain affected 236/593 respondents (39.8%). High body mass index, presence of bunions, back pain, rheumatoid arthritis, hip pain and lower occupation class were included in the final multivariate model and all were significantly and independently associated with moderate-to-severe foot pain (p < 0.05), except for rheumatoid arthritis (p = 0.057). Moderate-to-severe foot pain was significantly and independently associated lower foot function, foot health and health-related quality of life scores following adjustment for age, gender and body mass index (p < 0.05). Conclusions Moderate-to-severe foot pain was highly prevalent in a university-educated population and was independently associated with female gender, high body mass index, bunions, back pain, hip pain and lower occupational class. Presence of moderate-to-severe foot pain was associated with worse scores for foot function, foot health and health-related quality-of-life. Education attainment does not appear to be protective against moderate-to-severe foot pain

The ‘Biomes of Australian Soil Environments’ (BASE) project has generated a database of microbial diversity with associated metadata across extensive environmental gradients at continental scale. As the characterisation of microbes rapidly expands, the BASE database provides an evolving platform for interrogating and integrating microbial diversity and function

    Background: Microbial inhabitants of soils are important to ecosystem and planetary functions, yet there are large gaps in our knowledge of their diversity and ecology. The 'Biomes of Australian Soil Environments' (BASE) project has generated a database of microbial diversity with associated metadata across extensive environmental gradients at continental scale. As the characterisation of microbes rapidly expands, the BASE database provides an evolving platform for interrogating and integrating microbial diversity and function. Findings: BASE currently provides amplicon sequences and associated contextual data for over 900 sites encompassing all Australian states and territories, a wide variety of bioregions, vegetation and land-use types. Amplicons target bacteria, archaea and general and fungal-specific eukaryotes. The growing database will soon include metagenomics data. Data are provided in both raw sequence (FASTQ) and analysed OTU table formats and are accessed via the project's data portal, which provides a user-friendly search tool to quickly identify samples of interest. Processed data can be visually interrogated and intersected with other Australian diversity and environmental data using tools developed by the 'Atlas of Living Australia'. Conclusions: Developed within an open data framework, the BASE project is the first Australian soil microbial diversity database. The database will grow and link to other global efforts to explore microbial, plant, animal, and marine biodiversity. Its design and open access nature ensures that BASE will evolve as a valuable tool for documenting an often overlooked component of biodiversity and the many microbe-driven processes that are essential to sustain soil function and ecosystem services
