    Get PDF
With an estimated HIV prevalence of 14.3 percent among men and women age 15–49, Zambia is one of the sub-Saharan African countries most affected by the HIV and AIDS pandemic. The Zambia-led Prevention Initiative Program (ZPI) was developed by a consortium led by FHI360, with the Population Council as the evaluation partner. This study determined baseline levels of key indicators related to HIV, gender-based violence, and reproductive health. Additionally, the baseline findings provide critical insights into key areas for interventions in Zambia and highlights variability in the populations across provinces and between males and females that provide valuable guidance for programming

Inclusive or Exclusive Globalization? Zambia’s Economy and Asian Investment

    Get PDF
Sub-Saharan Africa's economy grew rapidly from 2004 to 2008, largely driven by Asian investment and trade. While much investment has been in primary commodities, Asian-owned manufacturing and other businesses in Africa, despite growing rapidly, have received very little attention. Using survey research, and other primary and secondary data this paper investigates the nature and impacts of Asian businesses in Zambia to interrogate whether their developmental impacts are inclusive or exclusionary. It then moves to assess the likely impact of the current global slowdown and how this will impact on Sino-Zambian economic relations.

It is about the press statement which was released on the arrest of CTPD staff and pastors. It was condemning the act by police to stand against the freedom of assembly which it states is a constitutional right. And they called upon the police command and the political leaders to be resilient in serving the people. It talked of how the church mother bodies stated they would continue advocating for social justice and speaking for the voiceless in the country. The CCZ, EFZ and the ZCCB were registering their extreme disappointment and concern at the then recent action by the police to prevent citizens from exercising their constitutional right to meet and discuss national issues affecting the society in which they live. This was when three (3) Centre for Trade Policy and Development (CTPD) staff and five (5) pastors were arrested, locked up and charged with unlawful assembly with intent to commit crime. The arrested citizens were only released on police bond after they presented working sureties. The church mother bodies condemned the conduct in strongest terms. They viewed the act as worrisome and that police brutality had crossed it's boundaries and the church is a place of refuge for the vulnerable and weak. The mother bodies further called for the police command in the country to be professional and operate above board to the satisfaction of all citizens regardless of their political affiliation, tribe, race, or religion. They urged the political leaders to exercise power with restraint

This is a report on the opinion poll, which was conducted late December 2001 and early January 2002 in seven districts of Zambia. The opinion poll was supervised by M and N Associates Limited on behalf of the Jubilee Zambia Movement. Jubilee Zambia is part of the CCJP/JCTR Debt project with a specific focus on Zambia’s debt problem. It started in 1998 as part of the worldwide movement to lobby the creditor countries and the international financial Institutions to cancel the un-payable debts of impoverished countries of the world by the year 2001.The main goal of the campaign is to achieve effective and equitable debt cancellation that results in poverty reduction. The World Bank and the IMF launched the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative of debt reduction in 1997 in an attempt to address the debt problems of severely indebted low-income countries. As of January 2002, Zambia’s total foreign debt stock stands at US5.8billiondroppingfromUS5.8 billion dropping from US6.5 billion, due to debt cancellation and relief. This paper seeks to generate information on public perception and knowledge on debt problem that will aid Jubilee Zambia plan its work and have a better understanding on the cancel the debt campaign. The survey employed a quota sampling methodology with quotas set between males and females. Face to face interviews were conducted in Lusaka, Chongwe, Kafue, Kabwe, Livingstone, Mongu and Ndola. A total of 1626 people were interviewed and from these, 52% were male and 48% female. The majority of the respondents (60%) reported that they have heard about the Jubilee ‘Cancel the debt’ campaign while 40% said they did not. The majority (67%) think that Zambia should not continue paying its debt. The majority of respondents (66%) are not aware that the HIPC resources have started coming to Zambia. Most of the respondents (49%) think that HIPC resources will never reach the poor people in Zambia. The most of the respondents (47%) want the church and NGO to monitor HIPC resources. The survey revealed that many people support the concern on the lack of transparency and accountability in the use of HIPC resources across the country. For the reparation campaign to be enhanced, citizens especially women and young people need to be provided with information related to the origin of Zambia’s external Debt

Foot-and-mouth disease control in Zambia: A review of the current situation

    Get PDF
Zambia has been experiencing low livestock productivity as well as trade restrictions owing to the occurrence of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and contagious bovine pleura pneumonia (CBPP). Foot-and-mouth disease was first recorded in Zambia in 1933 in the Western Province and since then the country has experienced repeated outbreaks. Bearing in mind the pressure that may be existing on the many risk factors for FMD including climate change, there is need to review our knowledge on FMD control. We present the spatial distribution of the FMD outbreaks that have been recorded in Zambia in the last twenty years, and the effect of the vaccinations and movement control that have been applied. We propose further strain characterisation of previous FMD outbreaks, including full sequence of VP1 gene and the 5’UTR site. The data will be geo-coded and populated with risk factor attributes. We also present preliminary findings of the buffalo and cattle probang sampling that was conducted in Lochnivar and Kafue National Park. We further probang sampled 25 buffalo at each interface area in Sioma Ngwezi, Lukusuzi and Lower Zambezi national parks. Villages in close proximity to the buffalo populations as well as those not in close proximity will be multistage cluster sampled for comparison. The data will be geo-coded and populated with risk factor and foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) characterisation attributes. Data collected using a pre-tested structured questionnaire will be geo-coded and populated with identified risk factors and stored in a database and will be spatially modelled to determine their effect on FMD occurrence and control measures. New outbreaks of FMD that may occur will be investigated to find out if there are new strains involved, species affected and predisposing risk factors. The authors conclude that impacts of FMD on livelihoods if appropriate control measures are not put in place are far more devastating especially at community level. Presented with the current poverty levels failure to institute result oriented control measures will exacerbate the already life-threatening situation
