    COUETTE FLOW PROBLEM FOR AN UNSTEADY MHD THIRD-GRADE FLUID WITH HALL CURRENTS

    ABSTRACT: In this work, we analyze Coutte flow problem for an unsteady mangneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) third-grade fluid in the presence of a pressure gradient and Hall currnts. Existing literature on the topic shows that the effecs of Hall current on Coutte flow of an unsteady MHD third-grade fluid with a prssure gradient has not yet been investigated. The arising non-linear problem is solved by the homotopy analysis method (HAM) and the convergence of the obtained complex series solution is carefully analyzed. The effects of pressure number, Hartmann number and Hall parameter on unsteady velocity are discussed via analysis of plots. ABSTRAK: Kajian dijalan untuk menganalisa masalah aliran Coutte bagi bendalir MHD gred ketiga dan arus Hall. Bagi topik ini kesan arus Hall terhadap aliran Couette dalam bendalir MHD gred ketiga tak mantap dengan kecerunan tekanan, belum pernah dikaji selidik.  Masalah tak linear berbangkit diselesaikan dengan kaedah analisis homotopi (HAM) dan ketumpuan solusi rangkaian kompleks dianalisa dengan teliti. Kesan nilai tekanan, nombor Hartmann dan parameter Hall terhadap halaju tak mantap diperbincangkan melalui plot yang dianalisis.     The aim of the study is to determine the impact of inflation on equity prices in Pakistan's economy. The examination time frame is 2012-2018; monthly information was gathered from the State Bank of Pakistan and the Pakistan Stock Exchange.     Association of 25 Hydroxy Vitamin D Levels with Age in Community Acquired Pneumonia

    Background : To determine association of 25 hydroxy vitamin D deficiency with age in patients with community acquired pneumonia (CAP). Methods: In this descriptive study 150 diagnosed patients of community-acquired pneumonia based on the CURB-65 scoring criteria were enrolled. The 25 hydroxy vitamin D levels were recorded in all patients. Patients were divided into three groups according to their age. Effect modifiers like gender were controlled by stratification. Post stratification chi square test was applied. A p value of 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Mean age of the patients was 40.05 ± 14.33 years (mean ± SD). Out of 150 patients 54.7% (n=82) were males while the 45.3% (n=68) were females. The mean level of vitamin D was 18.43 ± 5.005 (mean ± SD) ng/ml. When the cut off value for deficiency was applied i.e. 20 ng/ml, the 60% (n=90) patients were found deficient while 40% (n=60) patients had normal values. The p value was significant only for the age group to 35 to 50 years. Independent sample t test showed that the difference is statistically significant (p=0.003) in age groups between 35 to 50 years. Conclusions: Lower concentrations of vitamin D might be associated with CAP particularly in age group between 35 to 50 years

    Evaluation of quality of warfarin therapy by assessing patient\u27s time in therapeutic range at a tertiary care hospital in Pakistan

    Objective: To assess the time in therapeutic range in patients on warfarin anti-coagulation therapy. Methods: The retrospective chart review was conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, and comprised data of patients having undergone anti-coagulation with warfarin from January 2013 to April 2015. To determine the mean time in therapeutic range, Rosendaal method was used. Association of time in therapeutic range with the composite outcome, bleeding and thromboembolic events was also assessed. Percentage of patients with time in therapeutic range \u3c60% was calculated. Results: There were 92 patients whose median time in therapeutic range was 34.9% (interquartile range: 20.0- 55.7). Overall, 71(77.2%) patients had time in therapeutic range below 60% which had statistically significant correlation with the composite outcome (p\u3c0.05). Number of comorbids was significant in predicting time in therapeutic range and patients with time in therapeutic range\u3c 60% (p\u3c0.05). Conclusion: Subjects had poor anti-coagulation quality. It might be prudent to move towards novel oral anticoagulant drugsas the first choice for therapeutic anti-coagulation

    Comparison of Vitamin D Levels in Patients with Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever and Dengue Fever

    Background: To compare vitamin D levels in patients of dengue hemorrhagic fever with dengue feverMethods: A total of 50 patients with diagnosed dengue fever, who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were enrolled in the study. Patients were divided into two groups having 25 participants each; one group had Dengue fever (DF) while the other was suffering from dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF). Vitamin D was estimated by the chemiluminescence method. Pearson’s Chi-square was applied to compare the proportion of patients in each study group. Relative Risk was measured along with 95% confidence interval. Significant p-value was < 0.05.Results: Mean age of patients was 37.79 ± 15.2 years (range: 16-90 years). There were 74% males and 26% females. Mean vitamin D levels in dengue fever patients were higher (21.5 ± 13.6 ng/ml) as compared to Dengue hemorrhagic fever (12.4 ± 5.6 ng/ml). The difference was statistically significant (p=0.003).Conclusions: Vitamin D may have a role in the management of dengue fever. Low levels of vitamin D might be associated with dengue hemorrhagic fever

    Examining Relationship between Electricity Consumption and its Major Determinants in Pakistan

    The objective of the study is to examine the relationship between electricity consumption and its major determinants; particularly economic growth, number of electricity customers, electricity prices and electricity shortages in Pakistan using time series data from 1972 to 2012. The study employed the Johansen cointegration test to examine relationship between electricity consumption and its determinants. Multivariate granger causality test is then applied to determine the causality direction between electricity consumption and its major determinants. The results reveal that determinants of electricity consumption function are cointegrated and economic growth, number of electricity customers are positively related to electricity consumption, while electricity price and electricity shortages are negatively related to electricity consumption in Pakistan. However, bidirectional causality found between electricity consumption, economic growth and electricity customers except electricity prices which is exogenous determined. The short run, long run elasticities and multivariate granger causality results implies that at different time frame there is need to implement different policies for Pakistan. There is need to revise electricity pricing policy and find alternative renewable sources to generate low cost electricity and  further need to enhance energy management expertise to cope with crises in an efficient way.     Effectiveness of Vitamin D in Prevention of Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever and Dengue Shock Syndrome

    Background: To compare the risk and severity of development of Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) and Dengue Shock Syndrome(DSS) in patients receiving Vitamin D supplement compared to those not receiving it.Methods: Diagnosed patients of DF (n=124) were enrolled in this comparative study. Patients were randomized into two groups having 62 participants in each group. Group A received single dose of 200,000 IU Vitamin D and Group B received no intervention. Both groups were followed for development of DHF or DSS. Chi square was applied to compare the groups.Results: One patient (1.6%) in Group A developed DHF. Seventeen (27%) patients in Group B progressed to DHF. The relationship between Vitamin D and progression to DHF was significant, X2 (2, N=170) =16.43, p= 0.000). The calculated relative risk was 0.0588 (95% confidence interval, .0081 to .4285; p for trend = 0.0588).Conclusion: Vitamin D decreases the risk of DHF and may have a role in management of dengue fever

    The Comparison of Outcome in Treating Proximal Ureteric Stones of Size 10 mm to 15 mm Using Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy as Compared to Ureterorenoscopic Manipulation Using Holmium Laser

    Urinary stone disease or nephrolithiasis, the third most common disease of the urinary tract, is a major health issue due to its high prevalence, occurrence, and recurrence. The hallmark of a stone that obstructs the ureter or renal pelvis is excruciating, intermittent pain that radiates from the flank to the groin or to the inner thigh. Stone size influences the rate of spontaneous stone passage. Our aim was to compare the efficacy & the frequency of stone-free patients after intervention at 1 week after extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and ureterorenoscopic (URS) manipulation for proximal ureteric stone (10–15 mm size). This randomized control trial was done in the department of Urology, KRL Hospital Islamabad from 18th Nov 2019 to 18th May 2020. After meeting the inclusion criteria, 100 patients were enrolled and were divided into two groups. The first group was treated with ESWL and the other with URS. Then, procedures were done. Follow-up was noted after 1 week in the stone clinic. The average age of the patients was 39.71 ± 10.17 years. Efficacy in the ESWL group was found in 68% cases while in the URS group, efficacy was noticed in 76% cases (P > 0.05). Male patients were three times at a higher risk of recurrence as compared to females. This study concluded that both ESWL and URS are equally effective statistically in terms of the frequency of stone-free patients at 1 week for proximal ureteric stone (10–15 mm size)

    Assessment of Heavy Metal Contamination in the Soils of the Gulf of Aqaba (Northwestern Saudi Arabia): Integration of Geochemical, Remote Sensing, GIS, and Statistical Data

Rock and soil sample geochemical analysis was conducted to investigate the extent and causes of soil contamination in the Gulf of Aqaba region in NW Saudi Arabia. The inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to determine the concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu, Co, Cr, Mn, Fe, Hg, Mo, and Cd in 23 soil samples and 25 samples from granitic and Cenozoic marine sedimentary formations. The geochemical results have been integrated with remote sensing, GIS, and statistical analysis to assess the severity of soil pollution in the area. The concentrations of heavy metals (ppm) in the collected soil samples were as follows: Fe (2259.70), Mn (101.85), Zn (20.15), Pb (10.74), Cr (8.67), Cu (6.10), Co (1.35), Mo (0.69), Hg (0.30), and Cd (0.17). A significant variation in the mean metal concentrations was observed for the rock samples. The correlation analysis results showed that different degrees of positive and negative relationships exist among different metals in the area. Two factors (PC1 and PC2) were identified using the principal component analysis (PCA) and were responsible for about 60% of the total variance in the data. The studied metals were separated and classified into two factors based on their geochemical features and source. In contrast, the hierarchical cluster analysis grouped the identified metals into different groups based on the similarity of their characteristics. The principal component (PC2) applied to the Sentinel-2A image classified the land cover in the area into three classes: vegetation, barren rocks, and urban area. The enrichment factor shows a relatively higher percentage of enriched Mo; however, the indices of geo-accumulation and potential ecological risk generally reveal no substantial metallic contamination in the study area.     Ophthalmic Biomarker Detection Using Ensembled Vision Transformers -- Winning Solution to IEEE SPS VIP Cup 2023

    This report outlines our approach in the IEEE SPS VIP Cup 2023: Ophthalmic Biomarker Detection competition. Our primary objective in this competition was to identify biomarkers from Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images obtained from a diverse range of patients. Using robust augmentations and 5-fold cross-validation, we trained two vision transformer-based models: MaxViT and EVA-02, and ensembled them at inference time. We find MaxViT's use of convolution layers followed by strided attention to be better suited for the detection of local features while EVA-02's use of normal attention mechanism and knowledge distillation is better for detecting global features. Ours was the best-performing solution in the competition, achieving a patient-wise F1 score of 0.814 in the first phase and 0.8527 in the second and final phase of VIP Cup 2023, scoring 3.8% higher than the next-best solution
