    Reliability analysis of self-efficacy in dealing with legal and ethical issues: a preliminary study on trainee counselors in Malaysia

    The aim of this preliminary study is to disseminate the reliability of Ethical and Legal Issues in Counseling Self-Efficacy Scale (ELICSES). ELICSES consists of 23 items and it is used to measure trainee counselors’ self-efficacy in dealing with legal and ethical issues. We performed a small-scale study to assess the degree of reliability in a university setting. The findings revealed acceptable internal consistency reliability of the full scale and three subscales. Hence, the scale is an ideal instrument to measure trainee counselors’ self-efficacy in dealing with legal and ethical issues. However, we suggest the future researchers work on test-retest reliability and examine ELICSES across cultures involving multination

    Year two: the impact of addictions education and the experiential activities on attitudes of students

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of education and experiential learning on counseling student’s perceptions of substance use and counseling those with substance-related problems. Some counselors report having had negative experiences and beliefs about substance use, abuse, and persons with substance related-problems. A counselor’s negative beliefs and experiences can impair their capacities of working effectively and empathetically with persons who seek help for substance abuse problems. Research reports that education can assist helping professionals to be able to work more efficiently with clients with substance abuse struggles by increasing awareness of substance abuse problems, enhancing empathy, increasing professional’s ability to relate with what clients may be experiencing, training in appropriate interventions, and referral skills. Design/methodology/approach – This study measured changes in students’ attitudes toward addictions following completion of a 15-week addictions counseling course, which incorporated multiple experiential activities in conjunction with information about the effects of various substances and different treatment modalities. Findings – The results revealed significant changes in treatment intervention and non-stereotyping. Originality/value – These changes suggest education might affect attitudes toward substance abuse. The implications of this study can guide counselor educators in designing effective addictions courses and can lead to future discussions on how to use experiential learning in the classroom

    E-book development of group guidance model with use-bases sociodrama technique in improving self-resilience of students victims of bullying

    Bullying is a terrifying phenomenon for individuals who experience it, therefore victims of bullying need resilience to deal with bullying situations that occur. This study aims to analyze the development of a group counseling e-book model with user web-based sociodrama techniques to increase the resilience of bullied students.The research used quantitative and qualitative methods with Research and Development (R&D). The subjects of this study were 10 students who were victims of bullying for the experimental group at SMA N 15 Padang. Data were collected through observations, interviews, documents, and research tools on self-healing. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and SPSS version 21.00. The results show that (1) the group counseling e-book with social learning techniques based on the user's website is considered feasible for teachers/counselors to use to increase students' self-recovery ability. students who are victims of bullying, (2) the group's level of use of instructional eBooks with socio-dramatic techniques considered very good for use in guidance and counseling services. Therefore, it can be seen that the prototype of a group counseling e-book with web-based socio-dramatic techniques aimed at enhancing the self-resilience of bullied students is considered feasible and can be taught. used by the counselor/counselor to increase self-healing ability resilience of students who are victims of bullying

    Examining the predictors of willingness to seek counselling services

    The state of adolescents’ mental well-being has reached an alarming and worrying stage. Adverse life events, patterns of family changes, changes in peer relationships, and accompanied by the emergence of mental health problems are significant factors influencing the development of psychosocial problems among adolescents. Unfortunately, only a small number of adolescents will go for formal sources such as professional counsellors or mental health professionals when they need help. Thus, the main purpose of the present study was to determine the relationships between parent-child connection, social support, and willingness to seek counselling services among secondary school students in a selected district in Selangor, Malaysia. A total of 437 respondents participated in the present study of which were selected through cluster sampling techniques. The findings demonstrated that motherchild regard, mother-child responsibility, father-child responsibility, and family social support were positively correlated with willingness to seek counselling services among secondary school students. This study concluded family social support as a significant predictor of willingness to seek counselling services. Our study would suggest the importance of counsellors to psycho educate the students about the access and functions of counselling services in schools

    Counseling ethics education for enhanced professional identity and development: guidance and counseling teachers lifelong learning acquisition empowered

    Counseling ethics competency is an essential part of counselor identity development as required by the counseling profession, and counseling ethics education is one major component of knowledge acquisition in counseling profession training standards. The purpose of this qualitative research was to conduct an interpretive case study to explore, understand, describe, and interpret how guidance and counseling teachers learn, understand, experience, and apply counseling ethics education to their evolving professional identity and development in the counselor education training program. The main author was the primary instrument for data collection and analysis. Coding categories were developed and tentative themes emerged, were refined, and became the five emergent master themes for this research: education foundation, education integration, education application, education assimilation, and education appreciation. The discussion and interpretation are grounded in the principles of effective adult learning in counseling ethics education; to empower lifelong learning acquisition among guidance and counseling teachers toward enhanced professional identity and development

    Conceptualizing Basic Psychological Needs (BSPN) and motivation regulations as antecedents for guided teachers’ work commitment and satisfaction

    Guided teachers in Malaysia is carefully selected by the school, district education agency and the state education department. The selection is based on their low teaching competency. The guided teachers or known as GDB will be guided through mentoring by the School Improvement Specialist Coach (SISC+). It is found that amongst the important element that determine teachers’ competency are work commitment and satisfaction. Although the guided teachers programme has been conducted for 6 years (2014-2020), but the current literatures only focusing on the mentoring and the teachers’ perception on the SISC+. There is still limited study that focusing on the GDB work commitment and satisfaction after receiving mentoring from the SISC+ even though those two elements are imperatives to be studied. Henceforth, the aim of this article is to provide arguments on potential solutions to tackle on the said problem. It is argued that motivational capacity is paramount in enhancing work commitment and satisfaction. This study embarks to describe and conceptualize the important of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) in affecting both the work commitment and satisfaction of the guided teachers. It includes the discussion on Basic Psychological Needs (BSPN) and Motivational Spectrum. Initially, the article will discuss on the guided teachers work commitment and satisfaction and follows by the discussion and conceptualization of SDT. The effect of SDT including BSPN and motivational spectrum on commitment and satisfaction will be discussed next. The article shall contribute to the discussion and deliberation on teachers’ motivation, work commitment and satisfaction

    Marital dissolution is the legal termination of marital obligations between spouses, and it has been perceived as a very common issue, especially when there are more challenges and expectations in one’s life. This article is a systematic review study, which explores the factors or driving forces that lead to marital dissolution. Besides that, the pattern of this study is derived from a combination of marital dissolution culture, factors of marital dissolution, perspectives, and information extracted from Asian countries. Electronic database was used to search appropriate reading materials and a total of 10 journals were found. This article presents a systematic review of 10 journals that are the results of some inclusion and exclusion criteria. The driving forces of marital dissolution such as domestic violence, cohabitation, interparental conflict, economic considerations, house holding, and separation across borders were discussed systematically

    Open access for gamification: a systematic review of literature across disciplines

    Gamification is a combination of mission, story, and desirable behaviors that increases the likelihood of people showing particular behaviors. With the increasing need for developing effective learning methods, gamification has been widely used as a tool to improve the desire and interest in learning. The objective of this review is to identify disciplines, purposes, and target users of gamification through a systematic review involving gamification-related ‘open access’ scholarly materials. Using a series of rule performed through the Scopus database, we have examined 14 articles for an extensive review. We found that gamification fits numerous purposes and fields, allowing developers to expand their algorithms to be used for various subjects in different settings. Education leads the process of facilitating gamification and thus, we conclude that gamification is an attractive multidisciplinary learning tool. This review permits the implementation of gamification in many other disciplines and subsequently, increase desired behaviors
