Academic Diversity and University Governance: the Formation of a Research Agenda

Данная статья призвана обратить внимание на такое явление, как академическая неоднородность студентов внутри вузов, и уточнить исследовательскую повестку по изучению данного феномена и его взаимосвязи с университетским управлением. Обзор существующей литературы и статистических данных на примере России позволил обозначить круг возможных причин для роста академической неоднородности в вузах и предложить базовые предпосылки для определения ее уровня. В статье впервые осуществляется анализ академической неоднородности как контекстуальной переменной и организационной характеристики вузов, обосновывается ее значимость для университетского управления. Автор также приводит круг теоретических рамок, через которые может быть проанализировано управление университетом в контексте высокой академической неоднородности. Продолжением данной работы станет более детальное исследование практик управления в вузах. Результаты данной работы могут быть использованы для расширения существующей повестки исследований в области высшего образования, а также для анализа и планирования деятельности конкретных университетов.This article is designed to draw attention to such phenomenon as academic diversity of students within universities and to specify the research agenda for studying this phenomenon and its relationship with university management. A review of existing literature and statistics on the example of Russia allows for a) identifying the range of possible reasons for the growth of academic diversity in higher education institutions, and b) offering basic prerequisites for defining its level. For the first time the article analyses the academic diversity as a contextual variable and the organizational characteristic of higher education institutions, and justifies its significance for university governance and management. The author also provides a range of theoretical framework through which university governance can be analysed in the context of high academic diversity. The continuation of this work will be a more detailed study of universities management practices. The results of this work can be used to expand the current research agenda in the field of higher education, as well as to analyse and plan the activities of certain universities

Политика университетов по поддержке студентов в условиях академической неоднородности

The aim of this work is to review and analyse the support and development practices for students based on their educational background and academic performance. The increasingly widespread concept of a responsible university involves an opportunity to close or make smaller the gap between academically diversifi ed students. Thus, the purpose is to systematise the practice of working with both low and high-achieving students and assess the possibilities for improving the quality and effectiveness of this work. The analysis regarding existing practices of Russian and international universities is based on the literature review of more than 1600 sources. The review provides identifi cation, comparison and systematisation of common practices used by departments and universities rather than individual teachers. A classifi cation of practices at the stages of identifying, developing and evaluating low and high-achieving students is proposed. Recommendations are formulated for expanding the support and development of students under the conditions of academic diversity and for improving the quality and effectiveness of the educational process.Политика университетов по поддержке студентов в условиях академической неоднородности
