Effects of litters with different concentrations of phenolics on the competition between Calluna vulgaris and Deschampsia flexuosa
We hypothesized that the outcome of competition between ericaceous plants and grasses is strongly affected by the concentrations of phenolics in the litter that they produce. To test the effect of phenolic-rich litter on soluble soil nitrogen concentrations, plant nitrogen uptake and inter-specific competition, we conducted a greenhouse experiment with the shrub Calluna vulgaris and the grass Deschampsia flexuosa and their leaf litters. Two litters of C. vulgaris were used, with equal nitrogen concentration but different (high and low) concentrations of total phenolics. The D. flexuosa leaf litter contained lower concentrations of phenolics, but higher concentrations of nitrogen than the C. vulgaris litters. The plants were grown in monocultures and in mixed cultures. Inorganic and dissolved organic nitrogen were measured monthly during the experiment. After four months, we measured above- and belowground biomass and the nutrient concentrations in above- and belowground plant parts. In monocultures, C. vulgaris produced more shoot and root biomass on its own litter than with no litter. Growth of Calluna was reduced on grass litter. D. flexuosa plants produced most biomass on their own litter type, whether in monocultures or in mixed cultures. Addition of Calluna litter stimulated the growth of D. flexuosa both in monoculture and in mixtures. The grass plants outcompeted Calluna both on shrub litter and on grass litter but not when grown without litter. The two C. vulgaris litter types that differed in their concentration of phenolics did not differ in their effects on the competition between the two species or on the production of inorganic and dissolved organic nitrogen. Smoking and nicotine in inflammatory bowel disease: good or bad for cytokines?
Smoking has either a beneficial or harmful effect on the course and recurrence of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease respectively. Transdermal application of nicotine had similar effects in ulcerative colitis and therefore was considered to be an effective basic drug which could be further developed in the search for new compounds in the treatment of acute exacerbations of corticosteroid resistant ulcerative colitis. Millimeter polarisation of the protoplanetary nebula OH 231.8+4.2: A follow-up study with CARMA
In order to investigate the characteristics and influence of the magnetic
field in evolved stars, we performed a follow-up investigation of our previous
submillimeter analysis of the proto-planetary nebula (PPN) OH 231.8+4.2 (Sabin
et al. 2014), this time at 1.3mm with the CARMA facility in polarisation mode
for the purpose of a multi-scale analysis. OH 231.8+4.2 was observed at ~2.5"
resolution and we detected polarised emission above the 3-sigma threshold (with
a mean polarisation fraction of 3.5 %). The polarisation map indicates an
overall organised magnetic field within the nebula. The main finding in this
paper is the presence of a structure mostly compatible with an ordered toroidal
component that is aligned with the PPN's dark lane. We also present some
alternative magnetic field configuration to explain the structure observed.
These data complete our previous SMA submillimeter data for a better
investigation and understanding of the magnetic field structure in OH

Modelling the alumina abundance of oxygen-rich evolved stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud
In order to determine the composition of the dust in the circumstellar
envelopes of oxygen-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars we have computed a
grid of modust radiative-transfer models for a range of dust compositions,
mass-loss rates, dust shell inner radii and stellar parameters. We compare the
resulting colours with the observed oxygen-rich AGB stars from the SAGE-Spec
Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) sample, finding good overall agreement for stars
with a mid-infrared excess. We use these models to fit a sample of 37 O-rich
AGB stars in the LMC with optically thin circumstellar envelopes, for which
535-m Spitzer infrared spectrograph (IRS) spectra and broadband
photometry from the optical to the mid-infrared are available. From the
modelling, we find mass-loss rates in the range to
M, and we show that a grain
mixture consisting primarily of amorphous silicates, with contributions from
amorphous alumina and metallic iron provides a good fit to the observed
spectra. Furthermore, we show from dust models that the AKARI [11][15]
versus [3.2][7] colour-colour diagram, is able to determine the fractional
abundance of alumina in O-rich AGB stars.Comment: 22 pages, 17 figures, accepted MNRA

Epitaxial aluminium-nitride tunnel barriers grown by nitridation with a plasma source
High critical current-density (10 to 420 kA/cm^2)
superconductor-insulator-superconductor tunnel junctions with aluminium nitride
barriers have been realized using a remote nitrogen plasma from an inductively
coupled plasma source operated in a pressure range of 10^{-3} to 10^{-1} mbar.
We find a much better reproducibility and control compared to previous work.
From the current-voltage characteristics and cross-sectional TEM images it is
inferred that, compared to the commonly used AlO_x barriers, the
poly-crystalline AlN barriers are much more uniform in transmissivity, leading
