A note on 5-cycle double covers
The strong cycle double cover conjecture states that for every circuit of
a bridgeless cubic graph , there is a cycle double cover of which
contains . We conjecture that there is even a 5-cycle double cover of
which contains , i.e. is a subgraph of one of the five 2-regular
subgraphs of . We prove a necessary and sufficient condition for a 2-regular
subgraph to be contained in a 5-cycle double cover of
Nowhere-Zero 3-Flows in Signed Graphs
Tutte observed that every nowhere-zero -flow on a plane graph gives rise to a -vertex-coloring of its dual, and vice versa. Thus nowhere-zero integer flow and graph coloring can be viewed as dual concepts. Jaeger further shows that if a graph has a face--colorable 2-cell embedding in some orientable surface, then it has a nowhere-zero -flow. However, if the surface is nonorientable, then a face--coloring corresponds to a nowhere-zero -flow in a signed graph arising from . Graphs embedded in orientable surfaces are therefore a special case that the corresponding signs are all positive. In this paper, we prove that if an 8-edge-connected signed graph admits a nowhere-zero integer flow, then it has a nowhere-zero 3-flow. Our result extends Thomassen's 3-flow theorem on 8-edge-connected graphs to the family of all 8-edge-connected signed graphs. And it also improves Zhu's 3-flow theorem on 11-edge-connected signed graphs.published_or_final_versio

Phonon Hall effect in ionic crystals in the presence of static magnetic field
We study phonon Hall effect (PHE) for ionic crystals in the presence of
static magnetic field. Using Green-Kubo formula, we present an exact
calculation of thermal conductivity tensor by considering both positive and
negative frequency phonons. Numerical results are shown for some lattices such
as hexagonal lattices, triangular lattices, and square lattices. We find that
the PHE occurs on the nonmagnetic ionic crystal NaCl, although the magnitude is
very small which is due to the tiny charge-to-mass ratio of the ions. The
off-diagonal thermal conductivity is finite for nonzero magnetic field and
changes sign for high value of magnetic field at high temperature. We also
found that the off-diagonal thermal conductivity diverges as at low
temperature
Optical properties and radiative forcing of urban aerosols in Nanjing, China
AbstractContinuous measurements of atmospheric aerosols were made in Nanjing, a megacity in China, from 18 January to 18 April, 2011 (Phase 1) and from 22 April 2011 to 21 April 2012 (Phase 2). Aerosol characteristics, optical properties, and direct radiative forcing (DRF) were studied through interpretations of these measurements. We found that during Phase 1, mean PM2.5, black carbon (BC), and aerosol scattering coefficient (Bsp) in Nanjing were 76.1 ± 59.3 μg m−3, 4.1 ± 2.2 μg m−3, and 170.9 ± 105.8 M m−1, respectively. High pollution episodes occurred during Spring and Lantern Festivals when hourly PM2.5 concentrations reached 440 μg m−3, possibly due to significant discharge of fireworks. Temporal variations of PM2.5, BC, and Bsp were similar to each other. It is estimated that inorganic scattering aerosols account for about 49 ± 8.6% of total aerosols while BC only accounted for 6.6 ± 2.9%, and nitrate was larger than sulfate. In Phase 2, optical properties of aerosols show great seasonality. High relative humidity (RH) in summer (June, July, August) likely attributed to large optical depth (AOD) and small Angstrom exponent (AE) of aerosols. Due to dust storms, AE of total aerosols was the smallest in spring (March, April, May). Annual mean 550-nm AOD and 675/440-nm AE were 0.6 ± 0.3 and 1.25 ± 0.29 for total aerosols, 0.04 ± 0.02 and 1.44 ± 0.50 for absorbing aerosols, 0.48 ± 0.29 and 1.64 ± 0.29 for fine aerosols, respectively. Annual single scattering albedo of aerosols ranged from 0.90 to 0.92. Real time wavelength-dependent surface albedo from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was used to assess aerosol DRFs. Both total and absorbing aerosol DRFs had significant seasonal variations in Nanjing and they were the strongest in summer. Annual mean clear sky TOA DRF (including daytime and nighttime) of total and absorbing aerosols was about −6.9 and +4.5 W m−2, respectively. Aerosol DRFs were found to be sensitive to surface albedo. Over brighter surfaces, solar radiation was more absorbed by absorbing aerosols and less scattered by scattering aerosols
Metal-insulator transition in the one-dimensional Holstein model at half filling
We study the one-dimensional Holstein model with spin-1/2 electrons at
half-filling. Ground state properties are calculated for long chains with great
accuracy using the density matrix renormalization group method and extrapolated
to the thermodynamic limit. We show that for small electron-phonon coupling or
large phonon frequency, the insulating Peierls ground state predicted by
mean-field theory is destroyed by quantum lattice fluctuations and that the
system remains in a metallic phase with a non-degenerate ground state and
power-law electronic and phononic correlations. When the electron-phonon
coupling becomes large or the phonon frequency small, the system undergoes a
transition to an insulating Peierls phase with a two-fold degenerate ground
state, long-range charge-density-wave order, a dimerized lattice structure, and
a gap in the electronic excitation spectrum.Comment: 6 pages (LaTex), 10 eps figure
Contributions from SUSY-FCNC couplings to the interpretation of the HyperCP events for the decay \Sigma^+ \to p \mu^+ \mu^-
The observation of three events for the decay
with a dimuon invariant mass of MeV by the HyperCP collaboration
imply that a new particle X may be needed to explain the observed dimuon
invariant mass distribution. We show that there are regions in the SUSY-FCNC
parameter space where the in the NMSSM can be used to explain the
HyperCP events without contradicting all the existing constraints from the
measurements of the kaon decays, and the constraints from the
mixing are automatically satisfied once the constraints from kaon decays are
satisfied.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figure
B_c meson rare decays in the light-cone quark model
We investigate the rare decays
and in the framework of the
light-cone quark model (LCQM). The transition form factors are calculated in
the space-like region and then analytically continued to the time-like region
via exponential parametrization. The branching ratios and longitudinal lepton
polarization asymmetries (LPAs) for the two decays are given and compared with
each other. The results are helpful to investigating the structure of
meson and to testing the unitarity of CKM quark mixing matrix. All these
results can be tested in the future experiments at the LHC.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, version accepted for publication in EPJ
Superradiance of low density Frenkel excitons in a crystal slab of three-level atoms: Quantum interference effect
We systematically study the fluorescence of low density Frenkel excitons in a
crystal slab containing V-type three-level atoms. Based on symmetric
quasi-spin realization of SU(3) in large limit, the two-mode exciton
operators are invoked to depict various collective excitations of the
collection of these V-type atoms starting from their ground state. By making
use of the rotating wave approximation, the light intensity of radiation for
the single lattice layer is investigated in detail. As a quantum coherence
effect, the quantum beat phenomenon is discussed in detail for different
initial excitonic states. We also test the above results analytically without
the consideration of the rotating wave approximation and the self-interaction
of radiance field is also included.Comment: 18pages, 17 figures. Resubmit to Phys. Rev.
