Genetic characterization of cassava (Manihot esculenta) landraces in Brazil assessed with simple sequence repeats
Based on nine microsatellite loci, the aim of this study was to appraise the genetic diversity of 42 cassava (Manihot esculenta) landraces from selected regions in Brazil, and examine how this variety is distributed according to origin in several municipalities in the states of Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Amazonas and Mato Grosso. High diversity values were found among the five above-mentioned regions, with 3.3 alleles per locus on an average, a high percentage of polymorphic loci varying from 88.8% to 100%, an average of 0.265 for observed heterozygosity and 0.570 for gene diversity. Most genetic diversity was concentrated within the regions themselves (HS = 0.52). Cluster analysis and principal component based scatter plotting showed greater similarity among landraces from São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Amazonas, whereas those from Minas Gerais were clustered into a sub-group within this group. The plants from Mato Grosso, mostly collected in the municipality of General Carneiro, provided the highest differentiation. The migration of human populations is one among the possible reasons for this closer resemblance or greater disparity among plants from the various regions
Six Mode Selective Photonic Lanterns Using Either Step Or Graded Index Fibers
Low-loss all-fiber photonic lantern (PL) capable of selectively exciting the first six fiber modes of a multimode fiber (4 LP) are demonstrated. Mode field profile characterization of photonic lanterns using both step and graded index fibers is presented. Moreover, coupling and transmission over 100 m of a few mode fiber (FMF) is presented demonstrating low mode coupling and low losses
Six spatial modes photonic lanterns
Low-loss all-fiber mode selective photonic-lanterns capable of exciting six spatial fiber modes (4 LP modes) are demonstrated. Mode field profile characterization of photonic lanterns using both step and graded index fibers is presented
Scaling the fabrication of higher order photonic lanterns using microstructured preforms
We fabricate ten- and fifteen-mode photonic lanterns by using microstructured preforms that enables a repeatable fabrication process and scalability to large number of modes. Mode selective capability is demonstrated by independently exciting individual LP mode
Six mode selective fiber optic spatial multiplexer
Low-loss all-fiber photonic lantern (PL) mode multiplexers (MUXs) capable of selectively exciting the first six fiber modes of a multimode fiber (LP01, LP11a, LP11b, LP21a, LP21b, and LP02) are demonstrated. Fabrication of the spatial mode multiplexers was successfully achieved employing a combination of either six step or six graded index fibers of four different core sizes. Insertion losses of 0.2–0.3 dB and mode purities above 9 dB are achieved. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the use of graded index fibers in a PL eases the length requirements of the adiabatic tapered transition and could enable scaling to large numbers
A comparative genetic diversity assessment of industrial and household Brazilian cassava varieties using SSR markers
This study was carried out in order to assess the genetic diversity of 20 cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz) genotypes with high phenotypic performance using microsatellite markers. Two groups were considered for this study: eleven varieties for industrial uses and nine for household consumption. By using nine microsatellite primers, high polymorphism was identified in all the loci analyzed, with values reaching 100%. On average, 3.4 alleles per locus were found, with 0.371 the value estimated for the observed heterozygosity and 0.555 for gene diversity for the entire set of varieties. The genetic variability found in both varieties, cultivated on a large-scale in the South Center region of Brazil, is wide enough to allow the choice of divergent parental genotypes to be used in crosses to obtain new recombinant genotypes. Furthermore, the analyses indicated a high genetic variability within the two groups (I: varieties for industrial uses; II: varieties for household consumption). However, varieties for household consumption attain higher genetic variability, probably due to high priority placed on selection of different sensorial traits. In the cluster analysis, a tendency for separation of varieties for industrial use and household consumption was verified. Our results represent an important source of information to the cassava breeding program in Brazil
