Determination of Odorants in Varietal Wines from International Grape Cultivars (Vitis vinífera) Grown in NW Spain

This work was carried out to investigate the odorants found in ten varietal wines from different internationalgrape cultivars (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot noir, Tempranillo, Sauvignon blanc, Riesling,Chardonnay, Pinot gris, Pinot blanc and Gewürztraminer) grown in northwest Spain. Monoterpenes,alcohols, fatty acids, ethyl esters, acetates and volatile phenols were determined by gas chromatographymassspectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed that Gewürztraminer white wines had the highestconcentration of volatile compounds (35.7 mg/L). Monoterpenes, linalool, terpineol, citronellol and nerolwere detected only in Riesling and Gewürztraminer white wines. In the red wines, Cabernet Sauvignonfollowed by Merlot wines showed the highest concentration of total volatile composition (55.60 mg/L and50.90 mg/L respectively), characterised by a higher concentration of alcohols. Based on the individual odourthreshold, white Gewürztraminer and red Pinot noir wines showed the highest total OAV value. ANOVAhas shown significant differences among wines. Abate humanitário de crocodilianos.

Para a implantação da prática de abate humanitário para os jacarés foi desenvolvida pela Gil Equipamentos e a Embrapa Pantanal, a pistola ZILKA (Fig.1). A pistola foi desenvolvida para atender uma solicitação de pesquisa da Embrapa Pantanal a durante a execução do projeto de manejo experimental do jacaré-do-pantanal, Caiman crocodilus yacare, no Pantanal Sul. A pistola causa respostas de sensibilidade nos jacarés com um rápido estado de inconsciência e a incapacidade de respostas a estímulos externos. Essa etapa é fundamental para garantir o abate dentro dos princípios humanitários, uma vez que garantirá a inconsciência dos jacarés até a sangria. Dentre os diversos segmentos agrícolas da Bahia, destaca-se o da fruticultura como aquele considerado de importÔncia econ¶mica tanto pela produþÒo de frutas para exportaþÒo como a de produþÒo familiar que, juntas, abarcam um grande contigente de trabalhadores no Estado. A Bahia destaca-se na produþÒo de frutas tropicais com ßrea plantada de aproximadamente 270 mil hectares. Produz cerca de quatro milh§es de toneladas por ano, correspondendo a 12% da produþÒo do paÝs e 47% da regiÒo Nordeste, gerando um neg¾cio de 1,4 bilh§es de reais. Dentre as frutas produzidas no Estado, destacam-se, entre outras, a produþÒo de mamÒo, citros e banana. Importantes doenþas acometem o sistema produtivo destas fruteiras no estado. Cancer diagnosis disclosure from Portuguese physicians

OBJECTIVE: Doctor-patient communication in oncology, particularly concerning diagnostic disclosure, is a crucial factor related to the quality of the doctor-patient relationship and the psychological state of the patient. The aims of our study were to investigate physicians' opinions and practice with respect to disclosure of a cancer diagnosis and to explore potential related factors. METHOD: A self-report questionnaire developed for our study was responded to by 120 physicians from Coimbra University Hospital Centre and its primary healthcare units. RESULTS: Some 91.7% of physician respondents generally disclosed a diagnosis, and 94.2% were of the opinion that the patient knowing the truth about a diagnosis had a positive effect on the doctor-patient relationship. A need for training about communicating with oncology patients was reported by 85.8% of participants. The main factors determining what information to provide to patients were: (1) patient intellectual and cultural level, (2) patient desire to know the truth, and (3) the existence of family. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS: Our results point to a paradigm shift in communication with cancer patients where disclosure of the diagnosis should be made part of general clinical practice. Nevertheless, physicians still experience difficulties in revealing cancer diagnoses to patients and often lack the skills to deal with a patient's emotional responses, which suggests that more attention needs to be focused on communication skills training programs

Spin-orbit implementation of Solovay-Kitaev decomposition of single-qubit channels

The Solovay-Kitaev theorem allows us to approximate any single-qubit gate to arbitrary accuracy with a finite sequence of fundamental operations from a universal set of gates. Inspired by this decomposition, we present a quantum channel simulator capable of implementing any completely positive trace-preserving map. Our realization consists of one ancillary qubit, encoded in the transverse mode of a laser beam (orbital degree of freedom), one qubit system, encoded in its polarization (spin), one spin-orbit CNOT gate and four single-qubit operations performed with prisms and polarization components. Our results describe the implementation of arbitrary single-qubit channels on the photon polarization using the transverse mode as the ancillary qubit.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figure
