The findings of medical examinations performed in two groups of persons occupationally exposed to microwaves and radiofrequency radiation are presented in comparison with control findings. A group of 49 radar operators from the Zagreb Air Traffic Control was examined twice within a period of 18 months. The other group comprised 46 workers employed in radio relay stations. The control group were 46 workers from the Zagreb Airport. A follow-up study showed significant changes in haematological and biochemical parameters, in electrical brain activity and in capillaroscopic and ophthalmological findings in the group of radar operators within the followed period. For that group a cross-sectional study of the differences in general health status also showed the highest rate of changes. The results indicate that long-term occupational exposure to microwaves and radiofrequencies may damage sensitive organic systems.U radu su analizirani i komentirani nalazi medicinskih pretraga dviju skupina osoba izloženih mikrovalnom i radiofrekventnom zračenju i usporedive kontrolne skupine. Longitudinalna studija pokazuje značajne promjene u hematološkim i biokemijskim parametrima, električnoj aktivnosti mozga te u kapilaroskopskom i oftalmološkom statusu tijekom praćenog razdoblja.

A Monte Carlo study of the three-dimensional Coulomb frustrated Ising ferromagnet

We have investigated by Monte-Carlo simulation the phase diagram of a three-dimensional Ising model with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions and small, but long-range (Coulombic) antiferromagnetic interactions. We have developed an efficient cluster algorithm and used different lattice sizes and geometries, which allows us to obtain the main characteristics of the temperature-frustration phase diagram. Our finite-size scaling analysis confirms that the melting of the lamellar phases into the paramgnetic phase is driven first-order by the fluctuations. Transitions between ordered phases with different modulation patterns is observed in some regions of the diagram, in agreement with a recent mean-field analysis.Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Phys. When and where do you want to hide? Recommendation of location privacy preferences with local differential privacy

In recent years, it has become easy to obtain location information quite precisely. However, the acquisition of such information has risks such as individual identification and leakage of sensitive information, so it is necessary to protect the privacy of location information. For this purpose, people should know their location privacy preferences, that is, whether or not he/she can release location information at each place and time. However, it is not easy for each user to make such decisions and it is troublesome to set the privacy preference at each time. Therefore, we propose a method to recommend location privacy preferences for decision making. Comparing to existing method, our method can improve the accuracy of recommendation by using matrix factorization and preserve privacy strictly by local differential privacy, whereas the existing method does not achieve formal privacy guarantee. In addition, we found the best granularity of a location privacy preference, that is, how to express the information in location privacy protection. To evaluate and verify the utility of our method, we have integrated two existing datasets to create a rich information in term of user number. From the results of the evaluation using this dataset, we confirmed that our method can predict location privacy preferences accurately and that it provides a suitable method to define the location privacy preference

Short cavity InGaAsP/InP lasers with dielectric mirrors

Short cavity length (38 µm) lasers have been fabricated using a recently developed microcleavage technique. SiO2-amorphous Si multilayer coatings have been evaported on the lasers to obtain high reflectivity mirrors. The lasers have current thresholds as low as 3.8 mA with 85% reflecting front mirror and high reflectivity rear mirror and 2.9 mA with two high reflectivity mirrors. Single longitudinal mode operation is observed over a wide range of driving currents and temperatures

Semisolid processing characteristics of AM series Mg alloys by rheo-diecasting

The official published version of this Article can be found at the link below - Copyright @ 2006 ASM InternationalAn investigation has been made into the solidification behavior and microstructural evolution of AM50, AM70, and AM90 alloys during rheo-diecasting, their processibility, and the resulting mechanical properties. It was found that solidification of AM series alloys under intensive melt shearing in the unique twin-screw slurry maker during rheo-diecasting gave rise to numerous spheroidal primary magnesium (Mg) particles that were uniformly present in the microstructure. As a result, the network of the beta-Mg17Al12 phase was consistently interrupted by these spheroidal and ductile particles. Such a microstructure reduced the obstacle of deformation and the harmfulness of the beta-Mg17Al12 network on ductility, and therefore improved the ductility of rheo-diecast AM alloys. It was shown that, even with 9 wt pct Al, the elongation of rheo-diecast AM90 still achieved (9 +/- 1.2) pct. Rheodiecasting thus provides an attractive processing route for upgrading the alloy specification of AM series alloys by increasing the aluminum (Al) content while ensuring ductility. Assessment of the processibility of AM series alloys for semisolid processing showed that high Al content AM series alloys are more suitable for rheo-diecasting than low Al content alloys, because of the lower sensitivity of solid fraction to temperature, the lower liquidus temperature, and the smaller interval between the semisolid processing temperature and the complete solidification temperature. This work is supported by the EPSR
