Response to comments on "Differential Sensitivity to Human Communication in Dogs, Wolves, and Human Infants."

The comments by Fiset and Marshall-Pescini et al. raise important methodological issues and propose alternative accounts for our finding of perseverative search errors in dogs. Not denying that attentional processes and local enhancement are involved in such object search tasks, we provide here new evidence and argue that dogs’ behavior is affected by a combination of factors, including specific susceptibility to human communicative signals

Socially-mediated arousal and contagion within domestic chick broods

Emotional contagion – an underpinning valenced feature of empathy – is made up of simpler, potentially dissociable social processes which can include socially-mediated arousal and behavioural/physiological contagion. Previous studies of emotional contagion have often conflated these processes rather than examining their independent contribution to empathic response. We measured socially-mediated arousal and contagion in 9-week old domestic chicks (n = 19 broods), who were unrelated but raised together from hatching. Pairs of observer chicks were exposed to two conditions in a counterbalanced order: air puff to conspecifics (AP) (during which an air puff was applied to three conspecifics at 30 s intervals) and control with noise of air puff (C) (during which the air puff was directed away from the apparatus at 30 s intervals). Behaviour and surface eye temperature of subjects and observers were measured throughout a 10-min pre-treatment and 10-min treatment period. Subjects and observers responded to AP with increased freezing, and reduced preening and ground pecking. Subjects and observers also showed reduced surface eye temperature - indicative of stress-induced hyperthermia. Subject-Observer behaviour was highly correlated within broods during both C and AP conditions, but with higher overall synchrony during AP. Design and application of a novel ir emission liquid cell

A new IR emission liquid cell is designed to be suitable for measurements in liquid systems, including chemical reactions in liquid phase. The main advantage of the new cell is the variable sample layer thickness and a possibility to control reactions by dilatometry. The cell is equipped with a thermostate. Examples are shown to demonstrate how the cell can be used in IRES measurements in solvents and in liquid phase chemical reactions

Extremely high maternal alkaline phosphatase serum concentration with syncytiotrophoblastic origin

An extremely high alkaline phosphatase (AP) concentration (3609 IU/litre) was found in a 20 year old primigravida at 37 week’s gestation, prompting an examination of its histological and cellular origin. Immunohistochemistry and western blots using antibodies against AP, Ki-67, phospho-protein kinase B (Akt), phospho-p44/42 mitogen activated protein kinase/extracellular signal regulated kinase 1/2 (MAPK/Erk1/2), phospho-glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β), phospho-stress activated protein kinase/c-Jun N-terminal kinase, total-Akt, total-GSK-3β, and phospho-p38-MAPK were carried out on index and control placental samples of the same gestational age. Compared with controls, staining of the index placenta showed minimal AP labelling of the brush border and remarkable positivity of the intervillous space. Cytotrophoblastic proliferation was 8–10% in the index placenta compared with 1–2% in controls. The index placenta also had raised concentrations of protein kinases with important roles in cell differentiation. The proliferation and differentiation rates of the cytotrophoblasts were found to be five times higher in index samples than in controls. It is hypothesised that loss of syncytial membranes in immature villi led to increased AP concentrations in the maternal circulation and decreased AP staining of the placenta. Loss of the syncytium might also stimulate increased proliferation of villous cytotrophoblasts, which would then fuse and maintain the syncytium

NotI linking/jumping clones of human chromosome 3: mapping of the TFRC, RAB7 and HAUSP genes to regions rearranged in leukemia and deleted in solid tumors

AbstractBy applying the `recognition mask' strategy to 300 mammalian sequences containing NotI sites we demonstrated that 5′ ends of genes are highly enriched in NotI sites. A NotI linking clone NL2-252 (D3S1678) containing transferrin receptor (TFRC) gene was used as an initial point for chromosomal jumping. One of the jumping clones, J21-045 traverses 210 kbp and links NL2-252 to NL26 (D3S1632), a NotI linking clone containing highly polymorphic sequences. The TFRC gene was mapped to 3q29, close to the telomeric marker D3S2344, by linkage analysis, a panel of hybrid cell lines, GeneBridge 4 panel and FISH. Clone NLM-007 (D3S4302) was found to contain ras-homologous gene RAB7. By FISH and a panel of hybrid cell lines this gene was mapped to 3q21. This region is of particular interest due to frequent rearrangements in different types of leukemia. Clone L2-081 (D3S4283) containing new member of ubiquitin-specific proteases (HAUSP gene) was localized in 3p21 inspiring further investigation of involvement of this gene in development of lung and renal carcinomas
