Toughening reinforced epoxy composites with brominated polymeric additives

    Get PDF
Cured polyfunctional epoxy resins including tris(hydroxyphenyl)methane triglycidyl ether are toughened by addition of polybrominated polymeric additives having an EE below 1500 to the pre-cure composition. Carboxy-terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber is optionally present in the pre-cure mixture as such or as a pre-formed copolymer with other reactants. Reinforced composites, particularly carbon-reinforced composites, of these resins are disclosed and shown to have improved toughness

Absence of low-temperature dependence of the decay of 7Be and 198Au in metallic hosts

The electron-capture (EC) decay rate of 7Be in metallic Cu host and the beta-decay rate of 198Au in the host alloy Al-Au have been measured simultaneously at several temperatures, ranging from 0.350 K to 293 K. No difference of the half-life of 198Au between 12.5 K and 293 K is observed to a precision of 0.1%. By utilizing the special characteristics of our double-source assembly, possible geometrical effects that influence the individual rates could be eliminated. The ratio of 7Be to 198Au activity thus obtained also remains constant for this temperatures range to the experimental precision of 0.15(0.16)%. The resulting null temperature dependence is discussed in terms of the inadequacy of the often-used Debye-Huckel model for such measurements.Comment: Four pages, three figures. Pattern formation aspects of electrically charged tri-stable media with implications to bulk heterojunction in organic photovoltaics

A common thread in designing electrochemically-based renewable energy devices comprises materials that exploit nano-scale morphologies, e.g., supercapacitors, batteries, fuel cells, and bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics. In these devices, however, Coulomb forces often influence the fine nano-details of the morphological structure of active layers leading to a notorious decrease in performance. By focusing on bulk heterojunction organic photovoltaics as a case model, a self-consistent mean-field framework that combines binary (bi-stable) and ternary (tri-stable) morphologies with electrokinetics is presented and analyzed, i.e., undertaking the coupling between the spatiotemporal evolution of the material and charge dynamics along with charge transfer at the device electrodes. Particularly, it is shown that tri-stable composition may stabilize stripe morphology that is ideal bulk heterojuction. Moreover, since the results rely on generic principles they are expected to be applicable to a broad range of electrically charged amphiphilic-type mixtures, such as emulsions, polyelectrolytes, and ionic liquids.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Grafting of 2 (2-hydroxy-5-vinylphenyl) 2H-benzotriazole onto polymers with aliphatic groups. Synthesis and polymerization of 2 (2-hydroxy-5-isopropenylphenyl) 2H-benzotriazole and a new synthesis of 2 (2-hydroxy-5-vinylphenyl) 2H-benzotriazole

Successful grafting of 2(2-hydroxy-5-vinylphenyl)2H-benzotriazole onto saturated aliphatic C-H groups of polymers has been accomplished. When the grafting reaction was carried out in chlorobenzene at 150 C = 160 C with di-tertiarybutylperoxide as the grafting initiator, grafts as high as 20 percent - 30 percent at a grafting efficiency of 50 percent and 80 percent have readily been obtained. The grafting reaction was carried out in tubes sealed under high vacuum since trace amounts of oxygen cause complete inhibition of the grafting reaction by the phenolic monomer. On a variety of different polymers including atactic polypropylene, ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer, poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(butyl acrylate), and polycarbonate were used

Detecting New Physics from CP-violating phase measurements in B decays

    Get PDF
The standard CKM model can be tested and New Physics detected using only CP-violating phase measurements in B decays. This requires the measurement of a phase factor which is small in the Standard Model, in addition to the usual large phases β\beta and γ\gamma. We also point out that identifying violations of the unitarity of the CKM matrix is rather difficult, and cannot be done with phase measurements alone.Comment: 6 pages, Latex, no figure
