Fabrication of ultrathin and highly uniform silicon on insulator by numerically controlled plasma chemical vaporization machining

Metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect transistors fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer operate faster and at a lower power than those fabricated on a bulk silicon wafer. Scaling down, which improves their performances, demands thinner SOI wafers. In this article, improvement on the thinning of SOI wafers by numerically controlled plasma chemical vaporization machining (PCVM) is described. PCVM is a gas-phase chemical etching method in which reactive species generated in atmospheric-pressure plasma are used. Some factors affecting uniformity are investigated and methods for improvements are presented. As a result of thinning a commercial 8 in. SOI wafer, the initial SOI layer thickness of 97.5±4.7 nm was successfully thinned and made uniform at 7.5±1.5 nm. © 2007 American Institute of Physics.Yasuhisa Sano, Kazuya Yamamura, Hidekazu Mimura, Kazuto Yamauchi, and Yuzo Mori, "Fabrication of ultrathin and highly uniform silicon on insulator by numerically controlled plasma chemical vaporization machining", Review of Scientific Instruments 78(8), 086102 (2007) https://doi.org/10.1063/1.2766836

Topographic map reorganization in cat area 17 after early monocular retinal lesions

Neither discrete peripheral retinal lesions nor the normal optic disk produces obvious holes in one\u27s percept of the world because the visual brain appears to perceptually fill in these blind spots. Where in the visual brain or how this filling in occurs is not well understood. A prevailing hypothesis states that topographic map of visual cortex reorganizes after retinal lesions, which sews up the hole in the topographic map representing the deprived area of cortex (cortical scotoma) and may lead to perceptual filling in. Since the map reorganization does not typically occur unless retinotopically matched lesions are made in both eyes, we investigated the conditions in which monocular retinal lesions can induce comparable map reorganization. We found that following monocular retinal lesions, deprived neurons in cat area 17 can acquire new receptive fields if the lesion occurred relatively early in life (8 weeks of age) and the lesioned cats experienced a substantial period of recovery (\u3e3 years). Quantitative determination of the monocular and binocular response properties of reactivated units indicated that responses to the lesioned eye for such neurons were remarkably robust, and that the receptive-field properties for the two eyes were generally similar. Moreover, excitatory or inhibitory binocular interactions were found in the majority of experimental units when the two eyes were activated together. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that map reorganization after monocular retinal lesions require experience-dependent plasticity and may be involved in the perceptual filling in of blind spots due to retinal lesions early in life

Imprinting spatial helicity structure of vector vortex beam on spin texture in semiconductors

We present the transfer of the spatially variant polarization of topologically structured light to the spatial spin texture in a semiconductor quantum well. The electron spin texture, which is a circular pattern with repeating spin-up and spin-down states whose repetition rate is determined by the topological charge, is directly excited by a vector vortex beam with a spatial helicity structure. The generated spin texture efficiently evolves into a helical spin wave pattern owing to the spin-orbit effective magnetic fields in the persistent spin helix state by controlling the spatial wave number of the excited spin mode. By tuning the repetition length and azimuthal angle, we simultaneously generate helical spin waves with opposite phases by a single beam.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Faulting structure above the Main Himalayan Thrust as shown by relocated aftershocks of the 2015 Mw7.8 Gorkha, Nepal, earthquake

The 25 April 2015, Mw7.8 Gorkha, Nepal, earthquake ruptured a shallow section of the Indian‐Eurasian plate boundary by reverse faulting with NNE‐SSW compression, consistent with the direction of current Indian‐Eurasian continental collision. The Gorkha main shock and aftershocks were recorded by permanent global and regional arrays and by a temporary local broadband array near the China‐Nepal border deployed prior to the Gorkha main shock. We relocate 272 earthquakes with Mw>3.5 by applying a multiscale double‐difference earthquake relocation technique to arrival times of direct and depth phases recorded globally and locally. We determine a well‐constrained depth of 18.5 km for the main shock hypocenter which places it on the Main Himalayan Thrust (MHT). Many of the aftershocks at shallower depths illuminate faulting structure in the hanging wall with dip angles that are steeper than the MHT. This system of thrust faults of the Lesser Himalaya may accommodate most of the elastic strain of the Himalayan orogeny.Key PointsWe relocate the 2015 Gorkha earthquakes using teleseismic and regional waveformsThe main shock is located on the horizontal Main Himalaya Thrust (MHT) at a depth of 18.5 kmAftershocks show faulting structure in the hanging wall above the MHTPeer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/135634/1/grl53895.pdfhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/135634/2/grl53895_am.pd

Evidence of mature adipocyte proliferation regulated by proliferin

    Get PDF
Despite much research, whether mature adipocytes proliferate remains controversial. Here, we examined 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU)-labelling of mature adipocytes. Although BrdU incorporation into subcutaneous adipocytes was less than that in visceral adipocytes, pioglitazone (Pio) treatment increased BrdU incorporation in subcutaneous, but not visceral, adipocytes in rats. Fully differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes exhibited an increase in cell number and BrdU incorporation with time, with this increase enhanced by Pio treatment. We therefore screened for genes that encode growth factors regulated by Pio, and selected proliferin (PLF). Both gene silencing of PLF by small interfering RNA and treatment with anti-PLF antibody suppressed proliferation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. In adipocytes isolated from Pio-treated rats, the tissue-specific pattern of PLF expression was similar to that of BrdU incorporation. Administration of an anti-PLF antibody to mice reduced BrdU incorporation into adipocytes. Mature adipocytes thus have the ability to replicate, and this proliferation is positively regulated by PLF

Binocular deficits associated with early alternating monocular defocus. II. Neurophysiological observations

Experiencing binocularly conflicting signals early in life dramatically alters the binocular responses of cortical neurons. Because visual cortex is highly plastic during a critical period of development, cortical deficits resulting from early abnormal visual experience often mirror the nature of interocular decorrelation of neural signals from the two eyes. In the preceding paper, we demonstrated that monkeys that experienced early alternating monocular defocus (-1.5, -3.0, or -6.0 D) show deficits in stereopsis that generally reflected the magnitude of imposed monocular defocus. Because these results indicated that alternating monocular defocus affected the higher spatial frequency components of visual scenes more severely, we employed microelectrode recording methods to investigate whether V1 neurons in these lens-reared monkeys exhibited spatial-frequency-dependent alterations in their binocular response properties. We found that a neuron\u27s sensitivity to interocular spatial phase disparity was reduced in the treated monkeys and that this reduction was generally more severe for units tuned to higher spatial frequencies. In the majority of the affected units, the disparity-sensitivity loss was associated with interocular differences in monocular receptive field properties. The present results suggest that the behavioral deficits in stereopsis produced by abnormal visual experience reflect at least in part the constraints imposed by alterations at the earliest stages of binocular cortical processing and support the hypothesis that the local disparity processing mechanisms in primates are spatially tuned and can be independently compromised by early abnormal visual experience

A successful rechallenge with cetuximab for a case with metastatic rectal cancer

A 55-year-old man who had been diagnosed with rectal cancer with multiple liver metastases and lymph node metastases on colonoscopy and computed tomography (CT) was referred to Okayama University Hospital for treatment. Based on the diagnosis of non-curative rectal cancer, we planned to perform systematic chemotherapy after surgical resection. We performed a low anterior resection of a 36×35 mm upper rectal moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma with wil-type KRAS. After the resection, a FOLFIRI regimen with cetuximab was given as the first-line chemotherapy. Although metastatic lesions in the liver showed shrinkage, we decided to switch regimens because of intolerable adverse events. A modified FOLFOX6 regimen with bevacizumab was administered as the second-line treatment. There were no signs of disease progression until eight months later, when positron emission tomography (PET)/CT scans revealed that the new metastatic lesions appeared. As the third-line treatment, an irinotecan with cetuximab regimen was administered, leading to a good response for over 12 months. We experienced a successful rechallenge with cetuximab for a case with metastatic rectal cancer. For patients with wild-type KRAS colorectal cancer, rechallenge with cetuximab-based chemotherapy can be an effective therapeutic option

    Spontaneous regression of mediastinal seminoma

A 27-year-old man was transferred to our hospital with the complaint of facial edema and diagnosis of giant anterior mediastinal tumor. But soon after admission, the size of the tumor decreased remarkably, although he had no particular treatment. As the tumor was not completely regressed, surgical resection was performed subsequently, and examination of the specimen showed small foci of seminoma within the area of dense fibrous scar tissue, originated from the thymus. While regression of germ cell tumors are well recognized in cases of nonseminomatous germ cell tumors, this phenomenon of primary mediastinal seminoma was not reported previously
