Love NBA, hate BLM : racism in China’s sports fandom

Get PDF
This article aims to explore how racism plays out in China’s sports fandom in the wake of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement sweeping across the globe. To this end, we conducted a case study of basketball fans’ postings on the most popular Chinese-language sports fandom platform, Hupu. The research discovered that the often-negative assessments of the BLM movement posted on Hupu were largely informed by racism deeply held in traditional Chinese thinking, which provided the grounding for Chinese sports fans to appropriate racial discourses to assess progressive equal-rights politics in Euro-American societies. The trajectory of such a discursive practice was twofold, enabling these sports fans to rationalize their political views pertaining to both international and domestic arenas. The research findings urge scholarly attention to the dynamic interplay between regional popular cultures and global equal-rights politics in the digital age in China and beyond

“She uses men to boost her career” : Chinese digital cultures and gender stereotypes of female academics in Zhihu discourses

Portrayed by the media as the story of “how a female PhD juggles intimate relationship with four male PhD academics”, the LM incident, named after the female main character of the story, was a high-profile case, which provoked public debates on Chinese social media in 2019. In this article, we explore how the stereotyping of female PhDs plays out in Chinese Internet users’ discussions about the LM incident. We collected a total of 632 relevant posts from the most popular Chinese community question-answering (CQA) site – Zhihu and analysed them by drawing on critical discourse analysis (CDA). The research findings reveal how a sexualised portrayal of female PhDs, which is dramatically “different” from the traditional, asexual stereotypes of well-educated women, is established in Zhihu users’ postings. Many Zhihu users, including both women and men, mobilise an overwhelmingly sexualised portrayal of female PhDs, which speaks to the normalisation of patriarchal discourses in the status quo of Chinese academia and beyond. The research findings shed light on post-socialist gender politics, which facilitates the perpetuation of gender essentialism in China in the post-reform era

Investigation Into the Predictive Potential of Three-Dimensional Ultrasonographic Placental Volume and Vascular Indices in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

BackgroundThe use of ultrasonography in pregnancies complicated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can vary according to clinical practice. This study aims to compare the changes of placental volume (PV) and vascular indices measured by three-dimensional (3D) Power Doppler between pregnant women with and without GDM.Materials and MethodsThis was a prospective study of singleton pregnancies who took the early nuchal translucency examination from January 2018 to September 2019. Data on PV and vascular indices including vascularization index (VI), flow index (FI), and vascularization flow index (VFI) between pregnant women with and without GDM were measured by 3D Power Doppler ultrasound machine. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression determined the association between risk factors and GDM. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and area under the ROC curve (AUC) were applied to evaluate the diagnostic value of different parameters for GDM.ResultsOf the 141 pregnant women enrolled, 35 developed GDM and 106 did not. The maternal age and gravida in the GDM group were significantly higher than that in the non-GDM group. The PV, VI, FI, and VFI in the GDM group were significantly lower than that in the non-GDM group. There were no significant differences in other clinical parameters between the two groups. After adjustments in multivariate logistic regression analysis, significant differences were observed in VI [odds ratio (OR) = 0.98, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.951–1.002], FI (OR = 0.93, 955 CI: 0.86–1.00), and VFI (OR = 0.67, 95% CI = 0.52–0.87). ROC analysis indicated that the combination of maternal age, gravida, PV, and VFI was more accurate as a marker for detecting GDM than the PV, VI, FI, or VFI alone.ConclusionsThe 3D ultrasonography results suggest that PV and vascular indices (VI, FI, and VFI) during the first trimester may serve as potential markers for GDM diagnosis. The combination of maternal age, gravida, and sonographic markers may have good diagnostic values for GDM, which should be confirmed by further investigations

Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∌99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∌1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

Fusarium oxysporum Associated with Fusarium Wilt on Pennisetum sinese in China

Pennisetum sinese, a versatile and adaptable plant, plays an essential role in phytoremediation, soil reclamation, and fodder production. From 2018 to 2021, the occurrence of Fusarium wilt, with symptoms of foliar blight and internal discoloration of the stem, was observed in Chongqing, China. Pathogens were isolated from the symptomatic leaves. Based on morphological characteristics as well as DNA sequences of the 18S ribosomal RNA (SSU), translation elongation factor 1-α (EF1-α), RNA polymerase II subunit 1 (rpb1), and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (rpb2) genes, the causal agents were identified as Fusarium oxysporum. Phylogenetic analysis of the combined dataset of EF1-α, rpb1 and rpb2 showed that pathogenic isolates clustered with F. oxysporum strains. The pathogen was reisolated from inoculated and diseased tissues; thus, Koch’s postulates were fulfilled. This is the first report of F. oxysporum causing Fusarium wilt on P. sinese in China and worldwide

Determination of Selenium Speciation in High Se-Enriched Edible Fungus Ganoderma lucidum Via Sequential Extraction

No full text
Edible fungi are often used as an important selenium (Se) source to improve human daily Se intakes as food or Se supplements because of their strong ability to accumulate Se, in which Ganoderma lucidum was widely accepted in China. However, the existing Se speciation analysis methods such as protease K-based or trypsin-protease XIV-based, have low extraction rate and enzymatic hydrolysis rate (Ganoderma lucidum (Total Se content 245.7 ÎŒg/g in dry matter (DW)) in the present study. The results displayed that one three-step sequential extraction method as aqueous solution extraction-pepsin extraction-trypsin extraction performed the best, by which the total Se extraction rate could reach 65%, the total Se enzyme hydrolysis rate was 40%, and the Se speciation was revealed as Selenite (63.6%), SeCys2 (20.1%), SeMeCys (14.8%) and SeMet (1.5%) in this high Se-enriched Ganoderma lucidum. This study offers a reliable and efficient method to evaluate the Se transformation and the Se safety in high Se-enriched edible fungi
