    Monolithic integration of an injection laser and a metal semiconductor field effect transistor

    A new laser structure, the "T-laser", has been monolithically integrated with a MESFET on a semi-insulating GaAs substrate. Integration is achieved by means of a compatible structure in which the optically active layer of the laser also serves as the electrically active layer of the MESFET. Direct modulation of the laser by means of the transistor is demonstrated

    GaAl)As double-heterostructure stripe geometry lasers have been fabricated using Be ion implantation. Pulsed threshold currents as low as 21 mA have been found. The light-vs-current characteristics were kink-free up to 10 mW output power and the measured differential quantum efficiency was 45%

    A monolithically integrated optical repeater

    A monolithically integrated optical repeater has been fabricated on a single-crystal semi-insulating GaAs substrate. The repeater consists of an optical detector, an electronic amplifier, and a double heterostructure crowding effect laser. The repeater makes use of three metal semiconductor field effect transistors, one of which is used as the optical detector. With light from an external GaAlAs laser incident on the detector, an overall optical power gain of 10 dB from both laser facets was obtained

    The purpose of our work is to present the application of the attention training technique (ATT; Wells, 1990) for auditory hallucinations in people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. We expose the theoretical bases of the technique and comment on the scopes of its application, and the main results obtained until today. A description of the intervention procedure is included, both in general as well as the specific adaptation for schizophrenia. Finally, we discuss the advantages, applicability/suitability and the clinical implications of the technique.El objetivo de nuestro trabajo es presentar la aplicación de la técnica de entrenamiento en atención (attention training technique, ATT; Wells, 1990) a las alucinaciones auditivas de personas con diagnóstico de esquizofrenia. Se exponen las bases teóricas de la técnica y se comentan los ámbitos de aplicación de la misma con los principales resultados obtenidos hasta la fecha. Se incorpora, igualmente, una descripción del procedimiento de aplicación tanto general como específico en su adaptación a la esquizofrenia. Finalmente, se discuten las bondades de la técnica, su aplicabilidad/idoneidad y sus implicaciones clínicas.

    Housing Needs in Rural Communities

    This study explored housing in small rural communities in an attempt to understand the available housing stock, perceptions of the need for housing, and perceived barriers to housing development. Data were collected through computer-assisted telephone interviews with key community informants. Interviews included forced-choice as well as open-ended questions. Housing issues are described through the words of community leaders with the goal of understanding communities\u27 needs and constraints. Lower cost housing for both renters and owners and housing options for elderly individuals continue to be areas of need in rural communities
