PARENTAL INVESTMENT, COGNITIVE AND NON-COGNITIVE SKILLS FORMATION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH

    Get PDF
Parenting time helps a child to develop non-cognitive skills, whereas material investment in children along with the state schooling both help developing cognitive skills. Both cognitive and non-cognitive skills contribute to the formation of human capital, translating into labour productivity of an adult worker. The numerical simulations show that following results: (i) parents' stronger preference to material investment in children relative than time investment increases the rates of growth, as well as the higher relative importance of cognitive skills in human capital. However, the higher importance of parenting time decreases the growth rates. (ii) At the certain social weight, physical and human capital may under- or over-accumulate in the same or opposite directions. Laissez-faire economy does coincides with social optimum. (iii) Labour income taxation and subsidies in material investment are positive to implement the effcient allocations. Capital income is taxed or subsidized depending on the relative preference of parenting time and the agent's patience. (iv) Policy simulations reveal that higher labour and capital income tax rates both increases the growth rates. In contrast, public subsidy in material investment has counter effect to the growth rates. In the benchmark calibration, the best welfare-maximizing policy reformation is an increase in government spending on education funded by higher labour income tax rates

    Gender Determination using Fingerprint Features

    Get PDF
Several previous studies have investigated the gender difference of the fingerprint features. However, regarding to the statistical significance of such differences, inconsistent results have been obtained. To resolve this problem and to develop a method for gender determination, this work proposes and tests three fingertip features for gender determination. Fingerprints were obtained from 115 normal healthy adults comprised of 57 male and 58 female volunteers. All persons were born in Taiwan and were of Han nationality. The age range was18-35 years. The features of this study are ridge count, ridge density, and finger size, all three of which can easily be determined by counting and calculation. Experimental results show that the tested ridge density features alone are not very effective for gender determination. However, the proposed ridge count and finger size features of left little fingers are useful, achieving a classification accuracy of 75% (P-valu

Automatic inspection system for dimensional measurements of the saw blade milling cutter

    Get PDF
The demand for measuring equipments of automatic optical inspection has grown rapidly, because of its benefits of promoted efficiency and higher precision. Instead of manual projection measurements, measurement performance and efficiency can be obviously enhanced by the image measurement system. In this investigation, digital image processing and geometrical measurement principles have been integrated to develop a dynamic measurement system for the dimensional measurements of a saw blade milling cutter. The repeatability of the measurement system has been analyzed and its accuracy has been verified by using commercial 3D image measurement system. The analysis results show that the dimensional precision of 25μm and the angular precision of 0.21° can be realized by the self-developed measurement system. Between the results of the developed system and reference standard system, there are 25μm deviation in dimensional measurement and 0.26° in angular measurement. That measuring performances can meet the industrial requirement and the higher measurement efficiency can be achieved.Peer Reviewe

Crushing Strength Sampling With Minimal Damage to Taiwania (Taiwania Cryptomerioides) Using a Fractometer

    Get PDF
The Fractometer is a device that stresses radial increment cores in the direction of the fiber to measure crushing strength, which can provide a direct wood quality indicator for structural lumber. This study analyzes the pattern of the radial variation in Taiwania (Taiwania cryptomerioides Hay.) trunk wood crushing strength to explore its effect on the precision and efficiency of the sampling procedure in the outer increment core zone as an alternate nondestructive sampling method. A pith-to-bark 0.5-cm caliber core was extracted at breast height (1.3 m above the ground) from each tree and was separated into individual section groups. Then individual crushing strengths were determined using the Fractometer. In this study, the variation in crushing strength in the transverse direction increased from the pith outward to the bark side. An analysis of variance and correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. The magnitude of the radial variation in crushing strength was smaller than the tree-to-tree variation. Including samples of at least 7.2 cm, 5.4 cm, and 2.4 cm near the bark side was found to be acceptable for the assessment of wood crushing strength for trees of Type A (DBH > 27 cm), Type B (DBH = 23~27 cm), and Type C (DBH > 23 cm), respectively

Evaluation of Wood Quality of Taiwania Trees Grown with Different Thinning and Pruning Treatments Using Ultrasonic-Wave Testing

    Get PDF
The variations of Vtree, Vlumber, MOEtree, and MOElumber in the thinning and pruning treatments showed the similar trend. Results of this study also demonstrate that the effect of silvicultural practices on wood properties can be identified with the ultrasonic-wave properties of trees. This indicates that this non-destructive ultrasonic-wave technique can be provided basic information for future management practice and wood utilization of Taiwania

Effect of Moisture Content on the Drill Resistance Value in Taiwania Plantation Wood

    Get PDF
The effect of moisture content (MC) on the drill resistance values during desorption from a watersaturated condition of Taiwania (Taiwania cryptomerioides Hayta) plantation lumber was examined. Results showed that the drill resistance values tended to decrease with the decreasing of MC. Positive significant relationships were found among the MC, bulk density, and drill resistance values. This adjustment of density profiles could help the RESISTOGRAPH® to achieve a better measurement of the drill resistance profile of standing trees

Proposal to determine the Fermi-surface topology of a doped iron-based superconductor using bulk-sensitive Fourier-transform Compton scattering

We have carried out first-principles calculations of the Compton scattering spectra to demonstrate that the filling of the hole Fermi surface in LaO1−x_{1-x}Fx_{x}FeAs produces a distinct signature in the Fourier transformed Compton spectrum when the momentum transfer vector lies along the [100] direction. We thus show how the critical concentration xcx_c, where hole Fermi surface pieces are filled up and the superconductivity mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations is expected to be suppressed, can be obtained in a bulk-sensitive manner.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, accepted in Physical Review
