    Engineering Holographic Superconductor Phase Diagrams

    We study how to engineer holographic models with features of a high temperature superconductor phase diagram. We introduce a field in the bulk which provides a tunable "doping" parameter in the boundary theory. By designing how this field changes the effective masses of other order parameter fields, desired phase diagrams can be engineered. We give examples of generating phase diagrams with phase boundaries similar to a superconducting dome and an anti-ferromagnetic phase by including two order parameter fields. We also explore whether the pseudo gap phase can be described without adding another order parameter field and discuss the potential scaling symmetry associated with a quantum critical point hidden under the superconducting dome in this phase diagram.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figure

    Towards Searching for Entangled Photons in the CMB Sky

    We explore the possibility of detecting entangled photon pairs from cosmic microwave background or other cosmological sources coming from two patches of the sky. The measurements use two detectors with different photon polarizer directions. When two photon sources are separated by a large angle relative to the earth, such that each detector has only one photon source in its field of view, a null test of unentangled photons can be performed. The deviation from this unentangled background is, in principle, the signature of photon entanglement. To confirm whether the deviation is consistent with entangled photons, we derive a photon polarization correlation to compare with, similar to that in a Bell inequality measurement. However, since photon coincidence measurement cannot be used to discriminate unentangled cosmic photons, it is unlikely that the correlation expectation value alone can violate Bell inequality to provide the signature for entanglement.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure; references added, typos fixed. v3 revised version with more discussions on detection possibilities; added references.v4 published version in PR

    The delta 14C values in 42 rings of a white spruce grown in Mackenzie Delta was measured as a continuing effort of tracing the history of solar modulation of cosmic ray intensity.     Studying newborn neutron stars by the transient emission after stellar collapses and compact binary mergers

    The formation of neutron stars (NSs), both from collapses of massive stars and mergers of compact objects, can be usually indicated by bright transients emitted from explosively-ejected material. In particular, if the newborn NSs can rotate at a millisecond period and have a sufficiently high magnetic field, then the spin-down of the NSs would provide a remarkable amount of energy to the emitting material. As a result, super-luminous supernovae could be produced in the massive stellar collapse cases, while some unusual fast evolving and luminous optical transients could arise from the cases of NS mergers and accretion-induced collapses of white dwarfs.     Synthesis of VO_2 Nanowire and Observation of the Metal-Insulator Transition

    We have fabricated crystalline nanowires of VO_2 using a new synthetic method. A nanowire synthesized at 650^oC shows the semiconducting behavior and a nanowire at 670^oC exhibits the first-order metal-insulator transition which is not the one-dimensional property.     A highly efficient transcriptome-based biosynthesis of non-ethanol chemicals in Crabtree negative Saccharomyces cerevisiae

    Background: Owing to the Crabtree effect, Saccharomyces cerevisiae produces a large amount of ethanol in the presence of oxygen and excess glucose, leading to a loss of carbon for the biosynthesis of non-ethanol chemicals. In the present study, the potential of a newly constructed Crabtree negative S. cerevisiae, as a chassis cell, was explored for the biosynthesis of various non-ethanol compounds. Results: To understand the metabolic characteristics of Crabtree negative S. cerevisiae sZJD-28, its transcriptional profile was compared with that of Crabtree positive S. cerevisiae CEN.PK113-11C. The reporter GO term analysis showed that, in sZJD-28, genes associated with translational processes were down-regulated, while those related to carbon metabolism were significantly up-regulated. To verify a potential increase in carbon metabolism for the Crabtree negative strain, the production of non-ethanol chemicals, derived from different metabolic nodes, was then undertaken for both sZJD-28 and CEN.PK113-11C. At the pyruvate node, production of 2,3-butanediol and lactate in sZJD-28-based strains was remarkably higher than that of CEN.PK113-11C-based ones, representing 16.8- and 1.65-fold increase in titer, as well as 4.5-fold and 0.65-fold increase in specific titer (mg/L/OD), respectively. Similarly, for shikimate derived p-coumaric acid, the titer of sZJD-28-based strain was 0.68-fold higher than for CEN.PK113-11C-based one, with a 0.98-fold increase in specific titer. While farnesene and lycopene, two acetoacetyl-CoA derivatives, showed 0.21- and 1.88-fold increases in titer, respectively. From malonyl-CoA, the titer of 3-hydroxypropionate and fatty acids in sZJD-28-based strains were 0.19- and 0.76-fold higher than that of CEN.PK113-11C-based ones, respectively. In fact, yields of products also improved by the same fold due to the absence of residual glucose. Fed-batch fermentation further showed that the titer of free fatty acids in sZJD-28-based strain 28-FFA-E reached 6295.6\ua0mg/L with a highest reported specific titer of 247.7\ua0mg/L/OD in S. cerevisiae. Conclusions: Compared with CEN.PK113-11C, the Crabtree negative sZJD-28 strain displayed a significantly different transcriptional profile and obvious advantages in the biosynthesis of non-ethanol chemicals due to redirected carbon and energy sources towards metabolite biosynthesis. The findings, therefore, suggest that a Crabtree negative S. cerevisiae strain could be a promising chassis cell for the biosynthesis of various chemicals

    Ionic Liquid-assisted Synthesis of Polyaniline/Gold Nanocomposite and Its Biocatalytic Application

    In this report, a novel chemical synthesis of polyaniline/gold nanocomposite is explored using ionic liquid (IL) 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate. The direct chemical synthesis of polyaniline/gold nanocomposite was initiated via the spontaneous oxidation of aniline by AuCl4−in IL. A nearly uniform dispersion of polyaniline/Au particles with a diameter of 450 ± 80 nm was produced by this method, which indicates that this method is more suitable for controlling particle dimensions. It was also found that the electrical conductivity of the polyaniline/gold nanocomposite was more than 100 times higher than that of the pure polyaniline nanoparticles. The polyaniline/gold nanocomposite displays superior function in the biocatalytic activation of microperoxidase-11 because of the high surface area of the assembly and the enhanced charge transport properties of the composite material.
