Logical Operation Based Literature Association with Genes and its application, PosMed.

PosMed prioritizes candidate genes for positional cloning by employing our original database search engine GRASE, which uses an inferential process similar to an artificial neural network comprising documental neurons (or 'documentrons') that represent each document contained in databases such as MEDLINE and OMIM (Yoshida, _et al_. 2009, Makita, _et al_. 2009). PosMed immediately ranks the candidate genes by connecting phenotypic keywords to the genes through connections representing gene–gene interactions other biological relationships, such as metabolite–gene, mutant mouse–gene, drug–gene, disease–gene, and protein–protein interactions, ortholog data, and gene–literature connections.

To make proper relationships between genes and literature, we manually curate queries, which are defined by logical operation rules, against MEDLINE. For example, to detect a set of MEDLINE documents for the AT1G03880 gene in _A. thaliana_, we applied the following logical query: (‘AT1G03880’ OR ‘CRU2’ OR ‘CRB’ OR ‘CRUCIFERIN 2' OR ‘CRUCIFERIN B’) AND (‘Arabidopsis’) NOT (‘chloroplast RNA binding’). Curators refined these queries in mouse, rice and _A. thaliana_. For human and rat genes, we use mouse curation results via ortholog genes in PosMed.

The Exposition internationale du surréalisme in Tokyo (1937) and the Meaning of Displaying Photographic Reproductions <Articles>

In 1937, a small exhibition entitled Exhibition of Surrealist Works from Overseas was held at Nippon Salon in Tokyo. This exhibition was the first and almost the only surrealist exhibition in Japan before WWII, and in this sense, it definitely played a crucial role in the development of surrealism in Japan. Nevertheless, the evaluation of this exhibition was conditional. There seems to be two main reasons for this. Firstly, domestic artwork was completely excluded from this exhibition despite its official French title, Exposition internationale du surréalisme. Secondly, the majority of the works displayed there were photographic reproductions, and so considered less significant than the originals. These aspects have created an impression of the exhibition as an introduction of imported western art or for the purpose of ‘enlightening’ Japanese artists. In this paper, I examine the significance of the first surrealist exhibition in Japan from a viewpoint of the meaning of the display of photographic reproductions. The Road is Wider than Long: Galleries in Cork Street and Surrealism's Reception in the United Kingdom during the 1930's <Articles>

Cork Street, located in Mayfair in the West End of London, is a significant area that played a crucial role in the reception of surrealism in the United Kingdom (U.K.). This paper reexamines the reception of surrealism in the U.K. during the 1930's by analysing historical records and materials covering the activities of three rival galleries in Cork Street: Mayor Gallery, London Gallery, and Guggenheim Jeune. These galleries made their presence felt at three seismic moments in the history of British surrealism, that is, 1933 (Mayor Gallery), 1936 (London Gallery) and 1938 (Guggenheim Jeune). The aim of this paper is to examine how the activities of these galleries affected surrealism's development in the U.K., and to clarify how the galleries were involved in the promotion of surrealism as an art movement. Parkinsonian Symptomatology May Correlate with CT Findings before and after Shunting in Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus

We aimed to investigate the characteristics of Parkinsonian features assessed by the unified Parkinson's disease rating scale (UPDRS) and determine their correlations with the computed tomography (CT) findings in patients with idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH). The total score and the scores for arising from chair, gait, postural stability, and body hypokinesia in the motor examination section of UPDRS were significantly improved after shunt operations. Stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that postural stability was the determinant of the gait domain score of the iNPH grading scale. The canonical correlation analysis between the CT findings and the shunt-responsive Parkinsonian features indicated that Evans index rather than midbrain diameters had a large influence on the postural stability. Thus, the pathophysiology of postural instability as a cardinal feature of gait disturbance may be associated with impaired frontal projections close to the frontal horns of the lateral ventricles in the iNPH patients

Histidine-rich glycoprotein as a prognostic biomarker for sepsis

Various biomarkers have been proposed for sepsis; however, only a few become the standard. We previously reported that plasma histidine-rich glycoprotein (HRG) levels decreased in septic mice, and supplemental infusion of HRG improved survival in mice model of sepsis. Moreover, our previous clinical study demonstrated that HRG levels in septic patients were lower than those in noninfective systemic inflammatory response syndrome patients, and it could be a biomarker for sepsis. In this study, we focused on septic patients and assessed the differences in HRG levels between the non-survivors and survivors. We studied ICU patients newly diagnosed with sepsis. Blood samples were collected within 24 h of ICU admission, and HRG levels were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Ninety-nine septic patients from 11 institutes in Japan were included. HRG levels were significantly lower in non-survivors (n=16) than in survivors (n=83) (median, 15.1 [interquartile ranges, 12.7-16.6] vs. 30.6 [22.1-39.6] mu g/ml; p<0.01). Survival analysis revealed that HRG levels were associated with mortality (hazard ratio 0.79, p<0.01), and the Harrell C-index (predictive power) for HRG was 0.90. These results suggested that HRG could be a novel prognostic biomarker for sepsis

Behavioral Partitioning with Exploiting Function-Level Parallelism

Abstract-This paper proposes a method to efficiently generate hardware from a large behavioral description by behavioral synthesis. For a program with functions which are executable in parallel, this proposed method determines an optimal behavioral partitioning which fully exploits the function-level parallelism with simultaneously minimizing the area in the datapath and control path. This partitioning problem is formulated as an integer programming problem. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method

The Hydrogen Burning Turn-off of RS Ophiuchi 2006

We report a coordinated multi-band photometry of the RS Oph 2006 outburst and highlight the emission line free y-band photometry that shows a mid-plateau phase at y ~ 10.2 mag from day 40 to day 75 after the discovery followed by a sharp drop of the final decline. Such mid-plateau phases are observed in other two recurrent novae, U Sco and CI Aql, and are interpreted as a bright disk irradiated by the white dwarf. We have calculated theoretical light curves based on the optically thick wind theory and have reproduced the observed light curves including the mid-plateau phase and the final sharp decline. This final decline is identified with the end of steady hydrogen shell-burning, which turned out the day ~80. This turnoff date is consistent with the end of a supersoft X-ray phase observed with Swift. Our model suggests a white dwarf mass of 1.35 \pm 0.01 M_\sun, which indicates that RS Oph is a progenitor of Type Ia supernovae. We strongly recommend the y-filter observation of novae to detect both the presence of a disk and the hydrogen burning turn-off.Comment: to appear in ApJL, 4 pages including 4 figure

Clitoral Blood Flow Changes after Surgery with Tension-Free Vaginal Mesh for Pelvic Organ Prolapse

We measured basal clitoral blood flow by Doppler sonography to determine whether tension-free vaginal mesh(TVM) affects the clitoral blood flow and sexual function in women with pelvic organ prolapse (POP). We performed a prospective study of 22 patients who underwent TVM for POP. Clitoral blood flow was measured by Doppler ultrasound. The resistance index (RI), pulsatility index (PI), peak systolic velocity (PSV), and end-diastolic velocity (EDV) of the clitoral arteries were measured preoperatively and at 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. Female sexual function was also investigated with the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI). The mean PI and RI were increased at 1 month and significantly decreased at 6 months postoperatively (p<0.05). In contrast, the mean PSV and EDV decreased at 1 month postoperatively and increased at 6 months postoperatively. These four parameters recovered to baseline levels at 6 months following surgery. Total FSFI scores improved significantly from 10.2±7.9 at baseline to 18.2±8.9 at 6 months postoperatively. Color Doppler ultrasonography is potentially useful in measuring clitoral blood flow in patients treated with TVM for POP. Prospective long-term studies are needed to evaluate the utility of this modality as a diagnostic and prognostic tool for female sexual dysfunction
