A new position sensor for high-speed measurement of multiple points

    Get PDF
A high-speed measuring system of multiple points is becoming an important issue in many industrial applications. Therefore, the development of a high-speed position sensor is an important issue. However, conventional sensors such as CCD(charge-coupled device) and PSD(position-sensitive detector) are insufficient to apply to the high-speed measurement of multiple points. We propose a new position sensor for high-speed measurement of multiple points. The proposed sensor features a single scanning detecting method of multiple points by parallel processing technique and design of the sensor by analog circuitry, which makes high-speed measurement of multiple points possible. The designed sensor system realizes both high-speed performance and high accuracy </p

In recent years, SNS (Social Networking Service) are attracting attention in the field of web services. SNS is the communication system which focuses on social relations between users, such as a friend and a group, named a community. Thus, SNS is useful for the institutional repositories in the sense that they can 1) increase the time and frequency of use by users, and 2) categorize or utilize the contents using the community information. However in SNS nowadays, the increase of spam messages is becoming a problem. This is considered to be because a user authentication at the time of registration depends only on 1) the invitation from the existing user and 2) an effective mail address. In this presentation, the method of 1) authenticating the affiliation correctly at the time of registration, and of 2) exhibiting a real name only within affiliation and opening only an affiliation name to outside the affiliation, are shown based on literature [1], Moreover, its current state after an experimental installation are described. DRF International Conference 2008 Open Access and Institutional Repository in Asia-Pacific (DRFIC 2008), 30th and 31st January, Osaka, JAPAN / デジタルリポジトリ連合国際会議2008 アジア・環太平洋地域におけるオープンアクセスと機関リポジトリ(DRFIC 2008), 平成20年1月30‐31日, 大阪大学Poster Session No.6-Abstract / ポスターセッション No.6-予稿集抄

    Archaea ATP-Dependent RNA Ligase

RNA ligases play important roles in repairing and circularizing RNAs post-transcriptionally. In this study, we generated an allelic knockout of ATP-dependent RNA ligase (Rnl) in the hyperthermophilic archaeon Thermococcus kodakarensis to identify its biological targets. A comparative analysis of circular RNA reveals that the Rnl-knockout strain represses circularization of C/D box sRNAs without affecting the circularization of tRNA and rRNA processing intermediates. Recombinant archaeal Rnl could circularize C/D box sRNAs with a mutation in the conserved C/D box sequence element but not when the terminal stem structures were disrupted, suggesting that proximity of the two ends could be critical for intramolecular ligation. Furthermore, T. kodakarensis accumulates aberrant RNA fragments derived from ribosomal RNA in the absence of Rnl. These results suggest that Rnl is responsible for C/D box sRNA circularization and may also play a role in ribosomal RNA processing

Z-360, a novel therapeutic agent for pancreatic cancer, prevents up-regulation of ephrin B1 gene expression and phosphorylation of NR2B via suppression of interleukin-1 β production in a cancer-induced pain model in mice

Abstract

Background

Z-360 is an orally active cholecystokinin-2 (CCK2)/gastrin receptor antagonist currently under development as a therapeutic drug for pancreatic cancer. It was previously reported that Z-360 treatment in combination with gemcitabine prolonged the survival period in a lethal pancreatic cancer xenograft model in mice. In a phase Ib/IIa clinical study, Z-360 treatment displayed a trend of reduced pain in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer in combination with gemcitabine including analgesics such as opioids. Here, we investigated the mechanism of analgesic action of Z-360 in a severe cancer-induced pain model in mice, which is considered to be opioid-resistant, by examining ephrin B1 gene expression, <it>N</it>-methyl-D-aspartate receptor NR2B subunit phosphorylation, and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) production.

Results

In a mouse model of cancer-induced pain, ephrin B1 gene expression in dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) and the phosphorylation of NR2B in the spinal cord were induced. Z-360 treatment inhibited both ephrin B1 gene expression and the phosphorylation of NR2B. In addition, IL-1β production increased in the cancer-inoculated hind paw of mice, but could be suppressed by treatment with Z-360. Moreover, we observed that the CCK1 receptor antagonist devazepide similarly suppressed up-regulation of ephrin B1 gene expression and IL-1β production, and that the intraperitoneal injection of sulfated CCK-8 induced the production of IL-1β in the cancer-inoculated region.

Conclusions

We have identified a novel pain cascade, in which IL-1β production in cancer-inoculated regions induces ephrin B1 gene expression in DRGs and then ephrin B1 enhances the tyrosine phosphorylation of NR2B via Eph B receptor in the spinal cord. Notably, Z-360 relieves cancer-induced pain by preventing this pain cascade through the suppression of IL-1β production, likely via the blockade of CCK1 receptor. The pre-clinical results presented here support the analgesic action of Z-360 in pancreatic cancer patients with severe, opioid-resistant pain. Pre-clinical and clinical results have demonstrated that Z-360 combined with gemcitabine represents a promising pancreatic cancer therapy approach with characteristic analgesic effects in addition to the prolongation of survival.</p

Elasticity of semiflexible polymers in two dimensions

We study theoretically the entropic elasticity of a semi-flexible polymer, such as DNA, confined to two dimensions. Using the worm-like-chain model we obtain an exact analytical expression for the partition function of the polymer pulled at one end with a constant force. The force-extension relation for the polymer is computed in the long chain limit in terms of Mathieu characteristic functions. We also present applications to the interaction between a semi-flexible polymer and a nematic field, and derive the nematic order parameter and average extension of the polymer in a strong field.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figure
