    Na-ion dynamics in Quasi-1D compound NaV2O4

We have used the pulsed muon source at ISIS to study high-temperature Na-ion dynamics in the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) metallic antiferromagnet NaV2O4. By performing systematic zero-field and longitudinal-field measurements as a function of temperature we clearly distinguish that the hopping rate increases exponentially above Tdiff=250 K. The data is well fitted to an Arrhenius type equation typical for a diffusion process, showing that the Na-ions starts to be mobile above Tdiff . Such results makes this compound very interesting for the tuning of Q1D magnetism using atomic-scale ion-texturing through the periodic potential from ordered Na-vacancies. Further, it also opens the door to possible use of NaV2O4 and related compounds in energy related applications.Comment: Accepted for publication in Journal of Physics: Conference Series (2014

Analysis of the Behavior of Kurtosis by Simplified Model of One Sided Affiliated Impact Vibration

Among many amplitude parameters, Kurtosis (4-th normalized moment of probability density function) is recognized to be the sensitive good parameter for machine diagnosis. Kurtosis has a value of 3.0 under normal condition and the value generally goes up as the deterioration proceeds. In this paper, simplified calculation method of kurtosis is introduced for the analysis of impact vibration with one sided affiliated impact vibration which occurs towards the progress of time. That phenomenon is often watched in the failure of such as bearings' outer race. One sided affiliated impact vibration is approximated by one sided triangle towards the progress of time and simplified calculation method is introduced. Varying the shape of one sided triangle, various models are examined and it is proved that new index is a sensitive good index for machine failure diagnosis. Utilizing this method, the behavior of kurtosis is forecasted and analyzed while watching machine condition and correct diagnosis is executed

Among many dimensional and dimensionless amplitude parameters, Kurtosis (4-th normalized moment of probability density function) is recognized to be the sensitive good parameter for machine diagnosis. Kurtosis has a value of 3.0 under normal condition and the value generally goes up as the deterioration proceeds. But there are cases that kurtosis value goes up and then goes down when damages increase as time passes. In this paper, simplified calculation method of kurtosis is introduced for the analysis of impact vibration including affiliated impact vibration. Affiliated impact vibration is approximated by triangle and simplified calculation method is introduced. Varying the shape of triangle, various models are examined and above phenomenon is traced and its reason is clarified by the analysis. Utilizing this method, the behavior of kurtosis is forecasted and analyzed while watching machine condition and correct diagnosis is executed

Do Natural Disaster Affect the Poor Disproportionately? Price Change and Welfare Impact in the Aftermath of Typhoon Milenyo in the Rural Philippines

    Get PDF
This paper illustrates the sharp contrast in welfare impacts between the rich and the poor caused by typhoon Milenyo in a Philippine village. We find that fish prices dropped sharply due to the damage caused to fish pens near the village, leading to positive net welfare gains among the wealthy. In contrast , the poor do not consume much fish and thus did not gain from the sharp decline in prices. Finally, co nsumption reallocation played an important role as an ex post risk coping measure, albeit only among the wealthy, who are relatively well protected against typhoons.Embargo Period 24 monthshttp://www.grips.ac.jp/list/jp/facultyinfo/estudillo_jonna

A tri-axial accelerometer with structure-based voltage operation by using series-connected piezoelectric elements

    Get PDF
AbstractOutput-voltage operation on a sensor structure is proposed and a tri-axial accelerometer with low cross-axis sensitivities is designed. The output voltage between the electrodes sandwiching piezoelectric thin-films on a deforming structure is proportional to the in-plane stress of the piezoelectric thin-film. If the piezoelectric thin-film is processed to separated elements and the electrodes of the elements are connected in series, the output voltages from the series-connected piezoelectric elements are multiplied or canceled depending on the situations of the internal-stresses (i.e. compressive or tensile) of the elements. Proper design of the electrode connections by taking the deformation shape of structures into consideration can realize expected outputvoltage operations on the device structure. The principle of structure-based output-voltage operation is applied to the design of a tri-axial accelerometer with low cross-axes sensitivities. Finite-element-method (FEM) simulations of the tri-axial accelerometer revealed the cross-axis sensitivity of less than 1.5%

Social Defeat Stress Decreases mRNA for Monoamine Oxidase A and Increases 5-HT Turnover in the Brain of Male Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

Stress induces various neurobiological responses and causes psychiatric disorders, including depression. Monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) plays an important role in various functions of the brain, such as regulation of mood, anxiety and aggression, and dysregulation of MAO-A is observed in stress-related psychiatric disorders. This study addressed the question whether acute social stress induces changes to transcriptional and/or post-transcriptional regulation of MAO-A expression in the brain. Using male Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), we investigated whether acute social stress, induced by the presence of a dominant male fish, changes the expression of MAO-A. We measured gene expression of MAO-A by quantitative PCR, enzymatic activity of MAO-A by the luminescent method, and 5-HT and 5-HIAA levels by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry in the brain of socially stressed and control fish. Socially stressed males showed decreased MAO-A mRNA levels, consistent MAO-A enzymatic activity, increased 5-HT turnover in the brain, and elevated plasma cortisol levels, compared to controls. Our results suggest that acute social stress suppresses the transcription of MAO-A gene, enhances 5-HT metabolism but does not affect the production of MAO-A protein
