    Heterogeneous Exits: Evidence from New Firms

    This paper explores heterogeneous exits—bankruptcy, voluntary liquidation, and merger—by focusing on new firms. Using a sample of approximately 16,000 firms founded in Japan during 1997–2004, we examine the determinants of new-firm exit according to forms of exit. Regarding industry-specific characteristics, our findings indicate that new firms in capital-intensive and R&D-intensive industries are less likely to go bankrupt. In industries characterized by large amounts of capital and low price–cost margins, new firms are more likely to exit through voluntary liquidation and merger. Region-specific characteristics, such as regional agglomeration and unemployment rate, have significant effects on the hazards of exit, and their effects vary across different forms of exit. Moreover, we provide evidence that firm-specific characteristics, such as the number of employees, and entrepreneur-specific characteristics, such as educational background and age, play significantly different roles in determining each form of exit.New firm; exit; bankruptcy; voluntary liquidation; merger; competing risks proportional hazards model.

    Determinants of R&D cooperation in Japanese high-tech start-ups

    This paper explores the determinants of R&D cooperation in Japanese hightech start-ups. Using a sample from an original survey conducted in 2008, we examine the effects of founder-, firm-, and industry-specific characteristics on R&D cooperation by the type of partners. Our findings indicate that founder-specific characteristics, such as educational background, academic affiliation, and prior innovation output, are fairly important in determining R&D cooperation with universities and public research institutes. We also provide evidence that founders' work experience and prior innovation output have positive and significant effects on R&D cooperation with business partners. With respect to firm-specific characteristics, it is found that firms investing more in R&D tend to engage in R&D cooperation, regardless of the type of partners. Furthermore, it is found that independent firms are less likely to cooperate on R&D with universities and public research institutes, than subsidiaries and affiliated firms.Start-up, R&D cooperation, Founder, University, Business partner

    R&D financing of start-up firms : How much does founders' human capital matter?

    This paper explores research and development (R&D) financing of start-up firms. Using a sample from an original survey conducted in 2008, we identify whether initial funds and founder-specific characteristics relate to R&D investment of start-up firms in Japan. It is found that internal finance is positively associated with R&D investment. It is also found that founders with higher educational background, prior innovation output and academic affiliation tend to raise more funds for R&D. On the other hand, we provide evidence that the effects of founders' human capital are mediated by investment opportunities, which would indicate that R&D investment of start-up firms depends heavily on investment opportunities.Founder, Human capital, Internal finance, R&D, Start-up

    Exit or Continue? An Empirical Analysis of SMEs in Ota-ku and Higashiosaka, Japan (Japanese)

    This study investigates what types of firms and managers wish to exit or to continue in a market by focusing on two areas renowned for the high concentrations of manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Japan: Ota-ku in Tokyo Metropolitan and Higashiosaka in Osaka Prefecture. The results clearly indicate that high profitability and the possession of a specific technology are associated with a wish to continue in a market, while low profitability and the absence of a specific technology are associated with a wish to exit. The results also show that sole proprietor operations and small-scale businesses are associated with a desire to exit. Furthermore, it is found that firms in Ota-ku have a tendency toward a desire to exit than those in Higashiosaka.

    Comparisons of Postoperative Complications and Nutritional Status After Proximal Laparoscopic Gastrectomy with Esophagogastrostomy and Double-Tract Reconstruction

    [Background] The purpose of this study was to compare postoperative complications and nutritional status between esophagogastrostomy and double-tract reconstruction in patients who underwent laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy, and assess the advantages of both surgical procedures. [Methods] Between 2010 and 2018, 47 cases underwent proximal gastrectomy with esophagogastrostomy (n = 23) or double-tract reconstruction (n = 24) at our institution for the treatment of clinical T1N0 adenocarcinoma located in the upper third of the stomach. Patient clinical characteristics, short-term outcomes, nutrition status, and skeletal muscle index were compared among the two groups. [Results] There was no significant difference between esophagogastrostomy and double-tract reconstruction in terms of operation time, blood loss, and length of postoperative hospital stay. Reflux symptoms and anastomotic stenosis were significantly higher in the esophagogastrostomy group compared with the double-tract reconstruction group (P < 0.001 and P = 0.004, respectively). There was no significant difference in anastomotic leakage, surgical site infection, and pancreatic fistula. For the nutritional status, the decrease rate of cholinesterase was significantly higher in the esophagogastrostomy group compared with the double-tract reconstruction group at 6 months (P = 0.008) There was no significant difference in the decrease rate of skeletal muscle mass index at 1 year after surgery. [Conclusion] Compared with esophagogastrostomy, double-tract reconstruction tends to have better short-term nutritional status and postoperative outcomes in terms of preventing the occurrence of gastroesophageal reflux and anastomosis stenosis. These findings suggest that double-tract reconstruction may be a useful method in laparoscopic proximal gastrectomy

    The renin–angiotensin system promotes arrhythmogenic substrates and lethal arrhythmias in mice with non-ischaemic cardiomyopathy

    [Aims]The progression of pathological left ventricular remodelling leads to cardiac dysfunction and contributes to the occurrence of malignant arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. The underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear, however. Our aim was to examine the role of the renin–angiotensin system (RAS) in the mechanism underlying arrhythmogenic cardiac remodelling using a transgenic mouse expressing a cardiac-specific dominant-negative form of neuron-restrictive silencer factor (dnNRSF-Tg). This mouse model exhibits progressive cardiac dysfunction leading to lethal arrhythmias. [Methods and results]Subcutaneous administration of aliskiren, a direct renin inhibitor, significantly suppressed the progression of pathological cardiac remodelling and improved survival among dnNRSF-Tg mice while reducing arrhythmogenicity. Genetic deletion of the angiotensin type 1a receptor (AT1aR) similarly suppressed cardiac remodelling and sudden death. In optical mapping analyses, spontaneous ventricular tachycardia (VT) and fibrillation (VF) initiated by breakthrough-type excitations originating from focal activation sites and maintained by functional re-entry were observed in dnNRSF-Tg hearts. Under constant pacing, dnNRSF-Tg hearts exhibited markedly slowed conduction velocity, which likely contributes to the arrhythmogenic substrate. Aliskiren treatment increased conduction velocity and reduced the incidence of sustained VT. These effects were associated with suppression of cardiac fibrosis and restoration of connexin 43 expression in dnNRSF-Tg ventricles. [Conclusion]Renin inhibition or genetic deletion of AT1aR suppresses pathological cardiac remodelling that leads to the generation of substrates maintaining VT/VF and reduces the occurrence of sudden death in dnNRSF-Tg mice. These findings demonstrate the significant contribution of RAS activation to the progression of arrhythmogenic substrates

    Less Invasive Surgery for Remnant Stomach Cancer After Esophago-proximal Gastrectomy with ICG-guided Blood Flow Evaluation : A Case Report

    The standard procedure for remnant gastric cancer after esophago-proximal gastrectomy is total resection of the remnant stomach considering blood supply. However, sometimes surgery may be too invasive due to severe adhesion in the thoracic and mediastinal cavity. The blood supply to the remnant stomach depends on the right gastroepiploic artery and the right gastric artery. Therefore, preservation of the proximal region of the remnant stomach is thought to be anatomically impossible. We report a case of remnant gastric cancer that developed more than 12 years after lower thoracic esophagectomy plus proximal gastrectomy for Siewert Type I squamous cell carcinoma. We used intra-operative indocyanine green (ICG) venous-injection to evaluate blood flow and distal gastrectomy of the remnant stomach was performed by preserving the proximal stomach in the thoracic cavity through an abdominal approach. There were no complications of the remnant stomach or the anastomosis to the jejunum after surgery. In this case, we focused on the blood supply by collateral circulation through the anastomotic line from the remnant esophagus. After confirming blood supply with intra-operative evaluation using ICG fluorescence, less-invasive distal gastrectomy was successfully performed. As the intra-operative ICGbased evaluation for blood supply is a simple and safe method, it might be useful for determining the resection margin of various organs and be effective for the introduction of less invasive surgery.
