Financial Crisis and the Comovements of Housing Sub-markets: Do relationships change after a crisis?

This study of the co-movements of the transaction prices and trading volumes reveal that the mean correlation of prices, and trading volumes alike, among different housing sub-markets increases during the market boom. After a financial crisis, the correlations drop dramatically and stay low. The distribution of the correlations changes from skewed to symmetric. All these coincide with the increase in the total variance of prices, as well as the share of the idiosyncratic component in the total variance after the crisis. These findings are consistent to a family of theories which emphasize on “regime switch” in expectation.financial crisis; hedonic pricing; structural break; evolution of valuation; rolling regression

Comment on "Are periodic solar wind number density structures formed in the solar corona?" by N. M. Viall et al., 2009, Geophys. Res. Lett., 36, L23102, doi:10.1029/2009GL041191

Location of formation of periodic solar wind number density structures is discussed. Observation of proton and alpha anticorrelation in these structures [Viall et al., 2009] indicates that taking into account that bulk velocity of aplha-particles is higher than that of proton the place of formation for these structures should be located at distance less 0.002 AU from place of observation.Comment: 6 pages, submitted in GR

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2006.Includes bibliographical references (p. 97-102).Sub-threshold operation is a compelling approach for energy-constrained applications where speed is of secondary concern, but increased sensitivity to process variation must be mitigated in this regime. With scaling of process technologies, random within-die variation has recently introduced another degree of complexity in circuit design. This thesis proposes approaches to mitigate process variation in sub-threshold circuits through device sizing, topology selection and fault-tolerant architecture. This thesis makes several contributions to a sub-threshold circuit design methodology. A formal analysis of device sizing trade-offs between delay, energy, and variability reveals that while minimum size devices provide lowest energy and delay in sub-threshold, their increased sensitivity to random dopant fluctuation may cause functional errors. A proposed variation-driven design approach enables consistent sizing of logic gates and registers for constant functional yield. A yield constraint imposes energy overhead at low power supply voltages and changes the minimum energy operating point of a circuit.(cont.) The optimal supply and device sizing depend on the topology of the circuit and its energy versus VDD characteristic. The analysis resulted in a 56-cell library in 65nm CMOS, which is incorporated in a computer-aided design flow. A test chip synthesized from this library implements a fault-tolerant FIR filter. Algorithmic error detection enables correction of transient timing errors due to delay variability in sub-threshold, and also allows the system frequency to be set more aggressively for the average case instead of the worst case.by Joyce Y.S. Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2010.Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 180-190).Advances in mobile electronics are fueling new possibilities in a variety of applications, one of which is ambulatory medical monitoring with body-worn or implanted sensors. Digital processors on such sensors serve to analyze signals in real-time and extract key features for transmission or storage. To support diverse and evolving applications, the processor should be flexible, and to extend sensor operating lifetime, the processor should be energy-efficient. This thesis focuses on architectures and circuits for low power biomedical signal processing. A general-purpose processor is extended with custom hardware accelerators to reduce the cycle count and energy for common tasks, including FIR and median filtering as well as computing FFTs and mathematical functions. Improvements to classic architectures are proposed to reduce power and improve versatility: an FFT accelerator demonstrates a new control scheme to reduce datapath switching activity, and a modified CORDIC engine features increased input range and decreased quantization error over conventional designs. At the system level, the addition of accelerators increases leakage power and bus loading; strategies to mitigate these costs are analyzed in this thesis. A key strategy for improving energy efficiency is to aggressively scale the power supply voltage according to application performance demands. However, increased sensitivity to variation at low voltages must be mitigated in logic and SRAM design. For logic circuits, a design flow and a hold time verification methodology addressing local variation are proposed and demonstrated in a 65nm microcontroller functioning at 0.3V. For SRAMs, a model for the weak-cell read current is presented for near-V supply voltages, and a self-timed scheme for reducing internal bus glitches is employed with low leakage overhead. The above techniques are demonstrated in a 0.5-1.OV biomedical signal processing platform in 0.13p-Lm CMOS. The use of accelerators for key signal processing enabled greater than 10x energy reduction in two complete EEG and EKG analysis applications, as compared to implementations on a conventional processor.by Joyce Y. Large Silicon Abundance in Photodissociation Regions

We have made one-dimensional raster-scan observations of the rho Oph and sigma Sco star-forming regions with two spectrometers (SWS and LWS) on board the ISO. In the rho Oph region, [SiII] 35um, [OI] 63um, 146um, [CII] 158um, and the H2 pure rotational transition lines S(0) to S(3) are detected, and the PDR properties are derived as the radiation field scaled by the solar neighborhood value G_0~30-500, the gas density n~250--2500 /cc, and the surface temperature T~100-400 K. The ratio of [SiII] 35um to [OI] 146um indicates that silicon of 10--20% of the solar abundance must be in the gaseous form in the photodissociation region (PDR), suggesting that efficient dust destruction is undergoing even in the PDR and that part of silicon atoms may be contained in volatile forms in dust grains. The [OI] 63um and [CII] 158um emissions are too weak relative to [OI] 146um to be accounted for by standard PDR models. We propose a simple model, in which overlapping PDR clouds along the line of sight absorb the [OI] 63um and [CII] 158um emissions, and show that the proposed model reproduces the observed line intensities fairly well. In the sigma Sco region, we have detected 3 fine-structure lines, [OI] 63um, [NII] 122um, and [CII] 158um, and derived that 30-80% of the [CII] emission comes from the ionized gas. The upper limit of the [SiII] 35um is compatible with the solar abundance relative to nitrogen and no useful constraint on the gaseous Si is obtained for the sigma Sco region.Comment: 25 pages with 7 figures, accepted in Astrophysical Journa

Automorphic Instanton Partition Functions on Calabi-Yau Threefolds

We survey recent results on quantum corrections to the hypermultiplet moduli space M in type IIA/B string theory on a compact Calabi-Yau threefold X, or, equivalently, the vector multiplet moduli space in type IIB/A on X x S^1. Our main focus lies on the problem of resumming the infinite series of D-brane and NS5-brane instantons, using the mathematical machinery of automorphic forms. We review the proposal that whenever the low-energy theory in D=3 exhibits an arithmetic "U-duality" symmetry G(Z) the total instanton partition function arises from a certain unitary automorphic representation of G, whose Fourier coefficients reproduce the BPS-degeneracies. For D=4, N=2 theories on R^3 x S^1 we argue that the relevant automorphic representation falls in the quaternionic discrete series of G, and that the partition function can be realized as a holomorphic section on the twistor space Z over M. We also offer some comments on the close relation with N=2 wall crossing formulae.Comment: 25 pages, contribution to the proceedings of the workshop "Algebra, Geometry and Mathematical Physics", Tjarno, Sweden, 25-30 October, 201
