Waterways to Greenways: A Case Study in Shangjie, Zhengzhou, Henan, China
This case study introduces how we used a water sensitive approach to plan a storm water and sponge city project, which expanded into a holistic green infrastructure project. The project is in the Shangjie district in city of Zhengzhou, Henan China. The whole site is 61.16 km² including several waterways. The city is expanding into areas that were previously agricultural. Developers and city both desire to improve the ecological value of the city to boost the economic growth of the Shangjie district.
The main goal for the client is to transform the existing industrial city into a more resilient and livable ecological region. Our approach is to holistically solve the region\u27s increasing demand for flood control and storm water management, and to improve ecological and recreational values along these riparian corridors. We propose additional waterways and water bodies to act as green infrastructure, then link the greenways to existing or proposed parks to form a comprehensive greenway network.
Our multidisciplinary team conducted detailed investigations and collaborated extensively. The team consists of hydraulic engineers, civil engineers, environmental planners, landscape planners, urban planners, economic planners, and others. We used a variety of technologies, including GIS, Infoworks, remote sensing technology, MIKE model, and lab tests
Risk factors and treatment of pneumothorax secondary to granulomatosis with polyangiitis: a clinical analysis of 25 cases
Abstract Objectives To investigate the risk factors and treatment strategies for pneumothorax secondary to granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA). Method Retrospective analysis of cases with pneumothorax secondary to GPA from our own practice and published on literature. Results A total of 25 patients, 18 males and 7 females, mean age 44 ± 15.7 years, were analyzed. Diagnosis included pneumothorax (11 cases), hydropneumothorax (n = 5), empyema (n = 8) and hemopneumothorax (n = 1). 88% (22/25) patients showed single/multiple pulmonary/ subpleural nodules with/without cavitation on chest imaging. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein were both elevated. Corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents were used in 16 cases. Five cases received steroid pulse therapy, of which 4 patients survived. Pleural drainage was effective in some patients. Seven patients underwent surgical operations. In the 10 fatal cases, infection and respiratory failure were the most common cause. Lung biopsy/ autopsy showed lung/pleural necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis, breaking into the chest cavity, pleural fibrosis, bronchial pleural fistula, etc. The mean age in the death group was greater than the survival group (53 ± 12.9 years vs 40.1 ± 14.7 years, p = 0.05), the ineffective pleural drainage was also higher in the death group (5/5 vs 0/7, p = 0.01). Conclusions Pneumothorax was seen in the active GPA, due to a variety of reasons, and gave rise to high fatality rate. Aggressive treatment of GPA can improve the prognosis. Older and lack of response for pleural drainage indicates poor prognosis
A Study on Clinical and Pathologic Features in Lupus Nephritis with Mainly IgA Deposits and a Literature Review
Objective. To study the clinical and pathologic features of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) that has atypical lupus nephritis (LN) with mainly IgA deposits. Methods. We searched the SLE patients who had nephritis with mainly IgA deposits in our hospital and selected the information including clinical manifestations, laboratory tests, treatments, and prognosis. Results. From January 2009 to June 2012, 5 patients were definitely diagnosed as SLE according to both 1982 and 2009 ACR classification criteria. But renal biopsy showed that all cases had mainly IgA deposits and were free of IgG, C1q, and fibrinogen-related antigen deposits under immunofluorescent microscopy, which did not match with typical LN. There were 2 males and 3 females, aging from 31 to 64 years and with an average of years. The 5 cases had multiple-system involvements, mainly the renal system. Compared to primary IgAN, the atypical LN showed some differences: older than primary IgAN, more women than men, no previous infection history, lower incidence of serum IgA elevation, and ACL positive rate as high as 100%. Conclusion. Nephritis with mainly IgAN deposits, as an atypical LN, may be a special subtype of SLE
Tunable Plasmonic Band-Pass Filter with Dual Side-Coupled Circular Ring Resonators
A wavelength band-pass filter with asymmetric dual circular ring resonators in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure is proposed and numerically simulated. For the interaction of the local discrete state and the continuous spectrum caused by the side-coupled resonators and the baffle, respectively, the transmission spectrum exhibits a sharp and asymmetric profile. By adjusting the radius and material imbedded in one ring cavity, the off-to-on plasmon-induced absorption (PIA) optical response can be tunable achieved. In addition, the structure can be easily extended to other similar compact structures to realize the filtering task. Our structures have important potential applications for filters and sensors at visible and near-infrared regions
Understanding the Multitarget Pharmacological Mechanism of the Traditional Mongolian Common Herb Pair GuangZao-RouDouKou Acting on Coronary Heart Disease Based on a Bioinformatics Approach
GuangZao and RouDouKou (Fructus Choerospondiatis and Nutmeg, FCN) are one of the most common herb pairs in traditional Mongolian medicine for the treatment of coronary heart disease (CHD). However, evidence for the protective effect of FCN is limited, and its underlying mechanism of action remains unclear. The present study employed a network pharmacology approach to identify the potentially active ingredients and synergistic effects of the herb pair FCN as traditional Mongolian medicine. We predicted the targets of all available FCN ingredients with PharmMapper, SWISS, and SuperPred Server and clustered CHD-related targets from the DrugBank and the OMIM database. We also evaluated the links between herbal ingredients and pharmacological actions to explore the potential mechanism of action of FCN. We found that FCN targets a network of CHD-related key processes, including stress responses, cell adhesion and connections, angiogenesis, cell apoptosis and necrosis, the endocrine system, inflammatory and immune responses, and other biological processes. To confirm the predicted results, we investigated the protective effect of FCN on isoproterenol- (ISO-) induced myocardial ischemia in rats. Pathological assessment indicated that FCN inhibits apoptosis and inflammatory responses involving the myocardium. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and western blotting analyses demonstrated the therapeutic effects of FCN on ISO-induced myocardial ischemia rats, possibly via regulating stress and inflammatory responses and inhibiting cardiomyocyte apoptosis. The findings of the present study indicate that bioinformatics combined with experimental verification provide a credible and objective method to elucidate the complex multitarget mechanism of action of FCN
Three-Dimensional Macroporous Polypyrrole-Derived Graphene Electrode Prepared by the Hydrogen Bubble Dynamic Template for Supercapacitors and Metal-Free Catalysts
We
report a general method for the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D)
macroporous graphene/conducting polymer modified electrode and nitrogen-doped
graphene modified electrode. This method involves three consecutive
steps. First, the 3D macroporous graphene (3D MG) electrode was fabricated
electrochemically by reducing graphene oxide dispersion on different
conducting substrates and used hydrogen bubbles as the dynamic template.
The morphology and pore size of 3D MG could be governed by the use
of surfactants and the dynamics of bubble generation and departure.
Second, 3D macroporous graphene/polypyrrole (MGPPy) composites were
constructed via directly electropolymerizing pyrrole monomer onto
the networks of 3D MG. Due to the benefit of the good conductivity
of 3D MG and pseudocapacitance of PPy, the composites manifest outstanding
area specific capacitance of 196 mF cm–2 at a current
density of 1 mA cm–2. The symmetric supercapacitor
device
assembled by the composite materials had a good capacity property.
Finally, the nitrogen-doped MGPPy (N-MGPPy or MGPPy-X) with 3D macroporous
nanostructure and well-regulated nitrogen doping was prepared via
thermal treatment of the composites. The resultant N-MGPPy electrode
was explored as a good electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction
(ORR) with the current density value of 5.56 mA cm–2 (−0.132 V vs Ag/AgCl). Moreover, the fuel tolerance and durability
under the electrochemical environment of the N-MGPPy catalyst were
found to be superior to the Pt/C catalyst
