    Travels along the hype cycle: a set of blockchain applications and the economic processes they impact

    Some commentators refer to blockchain as a potential General Purpose Technology. Yet despite a plethora of cryptoassets and projects, it has struggled to gain traction beyond payments and price discovery. This thesis explores how the technology is being applied to better understand the potential and risks of deploying blockchain. It examines four different use cases with econometric and case study methods: (1) Bitcoin mining as the token incentivized processing of records, (2) Initial Coin Offering tokens as a form of venture financing, (3) Uniswap the decentralized exchange and (4) Kompany improving the data integrity of compliance records via notarization to a public blockchain. It finds that blockchain enables capabilities that did not exist before, but that these capabilities are bounded by trade offs and developer priorities. Ultimately this research expands the literature on blockchain applications and argues that blockchain does not build better systems, but different systems that can achieve different objectives. It provides evidence that firms and society are gradually traversing the hype cycle, deploying blockchain, solving real world economic problems and creating value

    Infectious complications of liver transplantation

    Sixteen (50%) of the 32 patients who received liver transplantations from October 1991 to March 1993 at Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong, developed viral, bacterial, or fungal infections. The viral infections were largely a result of immunosuppression while accidental bowel perforation, bile leak at the anastomosis, and delayed onset of stricture of the bile duct anastomosis were responsible for the intra-abdominal bacterial or fungal infections. Although the incidence of infectious complications was high, all patients were managed effectively and only one patient with lymphoproliferative disorder died. Infectious complications can lead to a prolonged hospital stay and a substantially increased hospital cost. The adoption of new immunosuppressive regimes that can better prevent acute graft rejection and adherence to meticulous surgical technique will help to reduce the infectious complications of liver transplantation in the future.published_or_final_versio

    Exposed-key weakness of αη\alpha \eta

    The αη\alpha \eta protocol given by Barbosa \emph{et al.}, PRL 90, 227901 (2003) claims to be a secure way of encrypting messages using mesoscopic coherent states. We show that transmission under αη\alpha \eta exposes information about the secret key to an eavesdropper, and we estimate the rate at which an eavesdropper can learn about the key. We also consider the consequences of using further randomization to protect the key and how our analysis applies to this case. We conclude that αη\alpha \eta is not informationally secure.Comment: 6 pg.     Frequency and accuracy of weight comments by others, and the association with weight misperception among Hong Kong adolescents

    *Purpose:* To assess the frequency and accuracy of weight comments received from different sources among Chinese adolescents and the relation of weight comments to weight misperception.

*Methods:* In the Hong Kong Student Obesity Surveillance (HKSOS) project 2006-07, 22612 form 1 to 7 students (41.5% boys) completed a questionnaire on obesity. Students were asked if they had received serious "too fat" or "too thin" comments over the past 30 days from family members, peers and professionals, and the accuracy of the comments was assessed against the actual weight status. Weight misperception was defined as discordance between the actual and perceived weight status. Logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted odd ratios (ORs) for weight misperception by weight comments received.

*Results:* One in three students received weight comments, most commonly from mother for both "too fat" and "too thin" comments. Health professional was the most accurate source of weight comments, yet less than half the comments were correct. Receiving incorrect weight comments was significantly associated with weight misperception in all sex-weight status sub-groups, particularly among obese girls. In contrast, student who received correct weight comments were less likely to have weight misperception.

*Conclusions:* Weight comments were commonly received by Chinese adolescents in Hong Kong, yet most of the comments were inaccurate, and such incorrect comments were associated with weight misperception. Family members, peers and professionals should realize the potential adverse effects of their weight comments and adolescents should be taught how to correctly assess their weight status to reduce misperceptions

    Interferon-gamma inducible protein 10 (IP10) induced cisplatin resistance of HCC after liver transplantation through ER stress signaling pathway.

    Tumor recurrence remains an obstacle after liver surgery, especially in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The acute-phase liver graft injury might potentially induce poor response to chemotherapy in recurrent HCC after liver transplantation. We here intended to explore the mechanism and to identify a therapeutic target to overcome such chemoresistance. The associations among graft injury, overexpression of IP10 and multidrug resistant genes were investigated in a rat liver transplantation model, and further validated in clinical cohort. The role of IP10 on HCC cell proliferation and tumor growth under chemotherapy was studied both in vitro and in vivo. The underlying mechanism was revealed by detecting the activation of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress signaling pathways. Moreover, the effect of IP10 neutralizing antibody sensitizing cisplatin treatment was further explored. In rat liver transplantation model, significant up-regulation of IP10 associated with multidrug resistant genes was found in small-for-size liver graft. Clinically, high expression of circulating IP10 was significant correlated with tumor recurrence in HCC patients underwent LDLT. Overexpression of IP10 promoted HCC cell proliferation and tumor growth under cisplatin treatment by activation of ATF6/Grp78 signaling. IP10 neutralizing antibody sensitized cisplatin treatment in nude mice. The overexpression of IP10, which induced by liver graft injury, may lead to cisplatin resistance via ATF6/Grp78 ER stress signaling pathway. IP10 neutralizing antibody could be a potential adjuvant therapy to sensitize cisplatin treatment

    Modeling of electric railway vehicle for harmonic analysis of traction power-supply system using spline interpolation in frequency domain

    It is essential to model nonlinear traction converter loads for harmonic analysis of traction systems. A behavioral model in frequency domain to represent electric railway vehicle based on testing and measurement is proposed for harmonic analysis. The harmonic current characteristics are represented by a set of polynomials generated from cubic smoothing spline interpolation. The purpose of this paper is to report and discuss the development of an electric railway model for harmonic analysis and demonstrate results from the simulation with this train load model. System simulation based on this model is performed and the results match satisfactorily with field measurement.published_or_final_versio

    Harmonic evaluation of traction system by Monte Carlo simulation

    This paper presents a method to predict the harmonic current level of traction system with phase-controlled DC Drives by Monte Carlo simulation. Based on Behavioral Modeling Technique (BMT), a model for electrical unit of traction is proposed. The probability density functions (pdf) of speed and notch numbers are obtained from longtime field measurement. The mean and variance of harmonic current of single electrical unit is obtained based on the speed pdf and traction electrical unit model. The results of Monte Carlo simulation are in good accordance with the experimental and analytic conclusions. The harmonics of a different number of trains are systematically investigated. It is shown the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) decreases with the increase of the number of trains and the harmonic current per train decreases with the train number because of the harmonic cancellation.published_or_final_versio
