    On the Relationship between Resolution Enhancement and Multiphoton Absorption Rate in Quantum Lithography

    The proposal of quantum lithography [Boto et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 2733 (2000)] is studied via a rigorous formalism. It is shown that, contrary to Boto et al.'s heuristic claim, the multiphoton absorption rate of a ``NOON'' quantum state is actually lower than that of a classical state with otherwise identical parameters. The proof-of-concept experiment of quantum lithography [D'Angelo et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 013602 (2001)] is also analyzed in terms of the proposed formalism, and the experiment is shown to have a reduced multiphoton absorption rate in order to emulate quantum lithography accurately.     Identification of novel porcine and bovine parvoviruses closely related to human parvovirus 4

    Human parvovirus 4 (PARV4), a recently discovered parvovirus found exclusively in human plasma and liver tissue, was considered phylogenetically distinct from other parvoviruses. Here, we report the discovery of two novel parvoviruses closely related to PARV4, porcine hokovirus (PHoV) and bovine hokovirus (BHoV), from porcine and bovine samples in Hong Kong. Their nearly full-length sequences were also analysed. PARV4-like viruses were detected by PCR among 44.4% (148/333) of porcine samples (including lymph nodes, liver, serum, nasopharyngeal and faecal samples), 13% (4/32) of bovine spleen samples and 2% (7/362) of human serum samples that were sent for human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C virus antibody tests. Three distinct parvoviruses were identified, including two novel parvoviruses, PHoV and BHoV, from porcine and bovine samples and PARV4 from humans, respectively. Analysis of genome pequences from seven PHoV strains, from three BHoV strains and from one PARV4 strain showed that the two animal parvoviruses were most similar to PARV4 with 61.5-63% nt identities and, together with PARV4 (HHoV), formed a distinct cluster within the family Parvoviridae. The three parvoviruses also differed from other parvoviruses by their relatively large predicted VP1 protein and the presence of a small unique conserved putative protein. Based on these results, we propose a separate genus, Hokovirus, to describe these three parvoviruses. The co-detection of porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus, the agent associated with the recent 'high fever' disease outbreaks in pigs in China, from our porcine samples warrants further investigation. © 2008 SGM.published_or_final_versio

    Quantum theory of optical temporal phase and instantaneous frequency

    We propose a general quantum theory of optical phase and instantaneous frequency in the time domain for slowly varying optical signals. Guided by classical estimation theory, we design homodyne phase-locked loops that enable quantum-limited measurements of temporal phase and instantaneous frequency. Standard and Heisenberg quantum limits to such measurements are then derived. For optical sensing applications, we propose multipass and Fabry-P\'erot position and velocity sensors that take advantage of the signal-to-noise-ratio enhancement effect of wideband angle modulation without requiring nonclassical light. We also generalize our theory to three spatial dimensions for nonrelativistic bosons and define an Hermitian fluid velocity operator, which provides a theoretical underpinning to the current-algebra approach of quantum hydrodynamics.Comment: 16 pages, v3: rewritten and extended, v4: some minor mistakes corrected, accepted by Physical Review

    Age-specific incidence rate in severe or symptomatic infection due to pandemic H1N1 2009 influenza virus

    Poster Abstract Session - Influenza and H1N1 Diagnosis, Epidemiology, and Viral Outcome: abstract no. 1133BACKGROUND: Age-specific incidence of the 2009 pandemic influenza provides the scientific basis of public health policies and the basic science research on the age-related susceptibility to influenza. While previous epidemiological studies provided vital information for public health policies, most did not incorporate age-specific data of asymptomatic, symptomatic and severe infection in the analysis. In this study, we incorporated data from seroprevalence and microbiologically-confirmed infection to estimate the relative impact of the pandemic influenza on various age groups. METHODS: For the determination of pre-pandemic and post-pandemic seroprevalence, archived plasma samples randomly collected at the clinical biochemistry department of Queen Mary Hospital in the years 2007 and 2010 were used respectively. Microbiologically-confirmed cases and severe cases reported to the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) from May 1, 2009 to May 23, 2010 were included in our analysis. This study was approved by the institutional review board of the Hospital Authority of Hong Kong. RESULTS: 795 and 1000 plasma samples were collected in 2007 and 2010 respectively. In 2007, 8.7% and 14.2% of individuals had HI titers ≥40 and ≥10 respectively. The pre-existing cross-reactive antibodies were mainly found in patients aged >70 years old. In 2010, the overall proportion of individuals with HI titers ≥40 and ≥10 is 23.2% and 42.2%. The highest overall microbiologically-confirmed incidence rate was found in the 0-10 year age group, and decreased with increasing age (ρ=-1.0, p<0.01). A total of 282 severe cases were reported with a mean age was 47.6 years. The incidence rate of severe cases showed an apparent bimodal age distribution, with higher incidence rate in the age group 0-10 and those older than 50 years old, and the highest incidence rate being those between 51 and 60 years old. CONCLUSION: While the young adults were most commonly infected, the clinical consequence is most alarming in children and older adults aged over 50 years.     Detection of SARS Coronavirus in Patients with Suspected SARS

    Cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) were investigated for SARS coronavirus (SARS-CoV) through RNA tests, serologic response, and viral culture. Of 537 specimens from patients in whom SARS was clinically diagnosed, 332 (60%) had SARS-CoV RNA in one or more clinical specimens, compared with 1 (0.3%) of 332 samples from controls. Of 417 patients with clinical SARS from whom paired serum samples were available, 92% had an antibody response. Rates of viral RNA positivity increased progressively and peaked at day 11 after onset of illness. Although viral RNA remained detectable in respiratory secretions and stool and urine specimens for >30 days in some patients, virus could not be cultured after week 3 of illness. Nasopharyngeal aspirates, throat swabs, or sputum samples were the most useful clinical specimens in the first 5 days of illness, but later in the illness viral RNA could be detected more readily in stool specimens

    Clostridium difficile isolates with increased sporulation: emergence of PCR ribotype 002 in Hong Kong

    We identified a predominant clone of Clostridium difficile PCR ribotype 002, which was associated with an increased sporulation frequency. In 2009, 3,528 stool samples from 2,440 patients were tested for toxigenic C. difficile in a healthcare region in Hong Kong. A total of 345 toxigenic strains from 307 (13.3%) patients were found. Ribotype 002 was the predominant ribotype, which constituted 35 samples from 29 (9.4%) patients. The mean sporulation frequency of ribotype 002 was 20.2%, which was significantly higher than that of the 56 randomly selected ribotypes other than 002 as concurrent controls (3.7%, p < 0.001). Patients carrying toxigenic ribotype 002 were more frequently admitted from an elderly home (p = 0.01) and received more β-lactam antibiotics in the preceding 3 months compared with the controls (p = 0.04) . The identification of toxigenic ribotype 002 in 2009 was temporally related to a significant increase in both the incidence of toxigenic C. difficile from 0.53 to 0.95 per 1,000 admissions (p < 0.001) and the rate of positive detection from 4.17% to 6.28% (p < 0.001) between period 1 (2004–2008) and period 2 (2009). This finding should alert both the physician and the infection control team to the establishment of and possible outbreaks by ribotype 002 in our hospitals, as in the case of ribotype 027
