    Multi-scale 3-D Surface Description: Open and Closed Surfaces

    A novel technique for multi-scale smoothing of a free-form 3-D surface is presented. Complete triangulated models of 3-D objects are constructed automatically and using a local parametrization technique, are then smoothed using a 2-D Gaussian filter. Our method for local parametrization makes use of semigeodesic coordinates as a natural and efficient way of sampling the local surface shape. The smoothing eliminates the surface noise together with high curvature regions such as sharp edges, therefore, sharp corners become rounded as the object is smoothed iteratively. Our technique for free-form 3-D multi-scale surface smoothing is independent of the underlying triangulation. It is also argued that the proposed technique is preferrable to volumetric smoothing or level set methods since it is applicable to incomplete surface data which occurs during occlusion. Our technique was applied to closed as well as open 3-D surfaces and the results are presented here

    Heuristic bidding strategies for multiple heterogeneous auctions

    This paper investigates utility maximising bidding heuristics for agents that participate in multiple heterogeneous auctions, in which the auction format and the starting and closing times can be different. Our strategy allows an agent to procure one or more items and to participate in any number of auctions. For this case, forming an optimal bidding strategy by global utility maximisation is computationally intractable, and so we develop two-stage heuristics that first provide reasonable bidding thresholds with simple strategies before deciding which auctions to participate in. The proposed approach leads to an average gain of at least 24% in agent utility over commonly used benchmarks

    Optimal bidding strategies for simultaneous Vickrey auctions with perfect substitutes

    In this paper, we derive optimal bidding strategies for a global bidder who participates in multiple, simultaneous second-price auctions with perfect substitutes. We first consider a model where all other bidders are local and participate in a single auction. For this case, we prove that, assuming free disposal, the global bidder should always place non-zero bids in all available auctions, irrespective of the local bidders’ valuation distribution. Furthermore, for nondecreasing valuation distributions, we prove that the problem of finding the optimal bids reduces to two dimensions. These results hold both in the case where the number of local bidders is known and when this number is determined by a Poisson distribution. In addition, by combining analytical and simulation results, we demonstrate that similar results hold in the case of several global bidders, provided that the market consists of both global and local bidders. Finally, we address the efficiency of the overall market, and show that information about the number of local bidders is an important determinant for the way in which a global bidder affects efficiency

    Cloning of Gaussian states by linear optics

    We analyze in details a scheme for cloning of Gaussian states based on linear optical components and homodyne detection recently demonstrated by U. L. Andersen et al. [PRL 94 240503 (2005)]. The input-output fidelity is evaluated for a generic (pure or mixed) Gaussian state taking into account the effect of non-unit quantum efficiency and unbalanced mode-mixing. In addition, since in most quantum information protocols the covariance matrix of the set of input states is not perfectly known, we evaluate the average cloning fidelity for classes of Gaussian states with the degree of squeezing and the number of thermal photons being only partially known.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Selective AP-sequence Based Indoor Localization without Site Survey

    In this paper, we propose an indoor localization system employing ordered sequence of access points (APs) based on received signal strength (RSS). Unlike existing indoor localization systems, our approach does not require any time-consuming and laborious site survey phase to characterize the radio signals in the environment. To be precise, we construct the fingerprint map by cutting the layouts of the interested area into regions with only the knowledge of positions of APs. This can be done offline within a second and has a potential for practical use. The localization is then achieved by matching the ordered AP-sequence to the ones in the fingerprint map. Different from traditional fingerprinting that employing all APs information, we use only selected APs to perform localization, due to the fact that, without site survey, the possibility in obtaining the correct AP sequence is lower if it involves more APs. Experimental results show that, the proposed system achieves localization accuracy < 5m with an accumulative density function (CDF) of 50% to 60% depending on the density of APs. Furthermore, we observe that, using all APs for localization might not achieve the best localization accuracy, e.g. in our case, 4 APs out of total 7 APs achieves the best performance.     School leadership and teachers' pedagogical orientations in Hong Kong: A comparative perspective

    As a secondary analysis of SITES 2006, this paper aims to explore the school leadership factors that potentially affect teachers' pedagogical orientations. The exploration is guided by four questions: (1) How do we describe school leadership factors? (2) What are the principals' perceptions about pedagogy and ICT use? (3) What are the teachers' perceptions about pedagogical orientations? and (4) How does the school leadership associate with teachers' pedagogical orientations? Eight school leadership constructs were identified, which cover four areas: learning goals, priority for resource allocation, types of assessment, and priority of competencies for school leadership to acquire. The findings also indicate a gap between principals' and teachers' perceptions on pedagogy and ICT use in Hong Kong. © Springer Science + Business Media, LLC 2009.postprin
