    Enterprise risk management and firm value within China's insurance industry

    Orientation: The article discusses the relationship between enterprise risk management (ERM) and firm value.Research purpose: The purpose of the study is to empirically examine the relationship between ERM and firm value. The study is undertaken within the context of the Chinese insurance industry.Motivation for the study: Recent attempts to link ERM with firm value have been undertaken primarily in the USA and Europe and have produced ambiguous and inconclusive findings.Research design, approach and method: Data was obtained from the China Insurance Regulatory Commission, a government body responsible for regulating insurance products and services in China. The data sample consisted of 135 insurance companies operating in China (in 2010). Regression modelling is employed to analyse the data.Main findings: The results show the relationship between ERM and firm value at first appears statistically significant within a Pearson correlation matrix but then falls below statistical significance on closer scrutiny through regression analysis. Accordingly, it is recommended that insurers in China should not look to aggressive investment in ERM as a strategy for producing quick gains in firm value.Practical/managerial implications: Risk managers should plan ERM development from a risk management maturity perspective, which equates the highest level of ERM development with ERM’s capacity to improve firm resilience to the unknown and serve as a mechanism for strategic decision-making.Contribution/value-add: The study employed return on equity as a proxy for firm value, utilising ordinary least squares regression modelling to test propositions of the relationships between variables

    Prediction of cancer cell sensitivity to natural products based on genomic and chemical properties

    Natural products play a significant role in cancer chemotherapy. They are likely to provide many lead structures, which can be used as templates for the construction of novel drugs with enhanced antitumor activity. Traditional research approaches studied structure-activity relationship of natural products and obtained key structural properties, such as chemical bond or group, with the purpose of ascertaining their effect on a single cell line or a single tissue type. Here, for the first time, we develop a machine learning method to comprehensively predict natural products responses against a panel of cancer cell lines based on both the gene expression and the chemical properties of natural products. The results on two datasets, training set and independent test set, show that this proposed method yields significantly better prediction accuracy. In addition, we also demonstrate the predictive power of our proposed method by modeling the cancer cell sensitivity to two natural products, Curcumin and Resveratrol, which indicate that our method can effectively predict the response of cancer cell lines to these two natural products. Taken together, the method will facilitate the identification of natural products as cancer therapies and the development of precision medicine by linking the features of patient genomes to natural product sensitivity

    BackgroundAlthough Alzheimer's disease (AD) mainly affects cognitive function, it is often accompanied by sleep disorders and psychobehavioral symptoms. These symptoms, including depression, agitation, and psychotic symptoms, are prominent hospitalization causes among patients with AD. Currently, relatively more research exists on light therapy for sleep disorders, while those on psychobehavioral symptoms are gradually increasing. However, no consensus exists on these results because of the vulnerability of light therapy to multiple factors, including light intensity and duration. Thus, further research investigating this aspect is warranted.ObjectiveTo evaluate the efficacy of light therapy in improving sleep disorders and psychobehavioural symptoms in patients with AD.MethodsIn this meta-analysis, relevant literature was searched in Embase, the Clinical Trials Registry, Web of Science, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library up to December 2022. Furthermore, a fixed-effects model was used for data analysis.ResultsFifteen randomized controlled trials involving 598 patients with AD were included. In the case of sleep disorders, our meta-analysis revealed that light therapy significantly improved sleep efficiency (MD = -2.42, 95% CI = -3.37 to -1.48, p ConclusionLight therapy leads to significant improvement in sleep and psychobehavioral symptoms and is associated with relatively fewer side effects in patients with AD, indicating its potential as a promising treatment option for AD

    The ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (STM) was used to characterize the GaSb1- (x) Bi (x) films of a few nanometers thickness grown by the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) on the GaSb buffer layer of 100 nm with the GaSb (100) substrates. The thickness of the GaSb1- (x) Bi (x) layers of the samples are 5 and 10 nm, respectively. For comparison, the GaSb buffer was also characterized and its STM image displays terraces whose surfaces are basically atomically flat and their roughness is generally less than 1 monolayer (ML). The surface of 5 nm GaSb1- (x) Bi (x) film reserves the same terraced morphology as the buffer layer. In contrast, the morphology of the 10 nm GaSb1- (x) Bi (x) film changes to the mound-like island structures with a height of a few MLs. The result implies the growth mode transition from the two-dimensional mode as displayed by the 5 nm film to the Stranski-Krastinov mode as displayed by the 10 nm film. The statistical analysis with the scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) measurements indicates that both the incorporation and the inhomogeneity of Bi atoms increase with the thickness of the GaSb1- (x) Bi (x) layer

    Characteristics, Source and Risk Assessment of Soil Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons around Oil Wells in the Yellow River Delta, China

    The Yellow River Delta (YRD) is the most complete wetland ecosystem in the warm temperate zone of China and is rich in oil resources. However, with petroleum extraction and the development of the economy, pollution of the YRD has been paid increasing attention, in particular, pollution via polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), as they have caused great harm to human health and the ecosystem balance. Based on the investigations of a research group in 2009, this study re-collected samples according to the same sampling points and analyzed the concentration, composition, source, ecological risk and health risk of PAHs in 2021. The concentration of ΣPAH16 in the surface soil of YRD in 2009 ranged from 2.6 to 8275.46 ng/g, with an average of 1744.41 ng/g. The concentration of ΣPAH16 in 2021 ranged from 56.25 to 582.56 ng/g, with an average of 149.63 ng/g. Therefore, the pollution situation in the YRD in 2021 was significantly improved compared with 2009. The composition of PAHs in soil in 2009 and 2021 was similar, which was dominated by low-ring PAHs. The evaluation results of the toxicity equivalent factor method showed that there was no potential ecological risk in the soil in 2009 and 2021. The evaluation results of the lifetime cancer risk increment model showed that the incremental lifetime cancer risk models (ILCRs) of soil PAHs in 2009 and 2021 were lower than the safety threshold of 10−6; therefore, there was no carcinogenic risk. The existing management measures for oil wells need to be further promoted to protect the regional ecological environment in the YRD

    Urinary peptidomics reveals proteases involved in idiopathic membranous nephropathy

    Abstract Background Idiopathic membranous nephropathy (IMN) is a cause of nephrotic syndrome that is increasing in incidence but has unclear pathogenesis. Urinary peptidomics is a promising technology for elucidating molecular mechanisms underlying diseases. Dysregulation of the proteolytic system is implicated in various diseases. Here, we aimed to conduct urinary peptidomics to identify IMN-related proteases. Results Peptide fingerprints indicated differences in naturally produced urinary peptide components among 20 healthy individuals, 22 patients with IMN, and 15 patients with other kidney diseases. In total, 1,080 peptide-matched proteins were identified, 279 proteins differentially expressed in the urine of IMN patients were screened, and 32 proteases were predicted; 55 of the matched proteins were also differentially expressed in the kidney tissues of IMN patients, and these were mainly involved in the regulation of proteasome-, lysosome-, and actin cytoskeleton-related signaling pathways. The 32 predicted proteases showed abnormal expression in the glomeruli of IMN patients based on Gene Expression Omnibus databases. Western blot revealed abnormal expression of calpain, matrix metalloproteinase 14, and cathepsin S in kidney tissues of patients with IMN. Conclusions This work shown the calpain/matrix metalloproteinase/cathepsin axis might be dysregulated in IMN. Our study is the first to systematically explore the role of proteases in IMN by urinary peptidomics, which are expected to facilitate discovery of better biomarkers for IMN

    Design, Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Jahanyne Analogs as Cell Cycle Arrest Inducers

    Jahanyne, a lipopeptide with a unique terminal alkynyl and OEP (2-(1-oxo-ethyl)-pyrrolidine) moiety, exhibits anticancer activity. We synthesized jahanyne and analogs modified at the OEP moiety, employing an α-fluoromethyl ketone (FMK) strategy. Preliminary bioassays indicated that compound 1b (FMK–jahanyne) exhibited decreased activities to varying degrees against most of the cancer cells tested, whereas the introduction of a fluorine atom to the α-position of a hydroxyl group (2b) enhanced activities against all lung cancer cells. Moreover, jahanyne and 2b could induce G0/G1 cell cycle arrest in a concentration-dependent manner
