Refinement and growth enhancement of Al2Cu phase during magnetic field assisting directional solidification of hypereutectic Al-Cu alloy.
International audienceUnderstanding how the magnetic fields affect the formation of reinforced phase during solidification is crucial to tailor the structure and therefor the performance of metal matrix in situ composites. In this study, a hypereutectic Al-40 wt.% Cu alloy has been directionally solidified under various axial magnetic fields and the morphology of Al2Cu phase was quantified in 3D by means of high resolution synchrotron X-ray tomography. With rising magnetic fields, both increase of Al2Cu phase's total volume and decrease of each column's transverse section area were found. These results respectively indicate the growth enhancement and refinement of the primary Al2Cu phase in the magnetic field assisting directional solidification. The thermoelectric magnetic forces (TEMF) causing torque and dislocation multiplication in the faceted primary phases were thought dedicate to respectively the refinement and growth enhancement. To verify this, a real structure based 3D simulation of TEMF in Al2Cu column was carried out, and the dislocations in the Al2Cu phase obtained without and with a 10T high magnetic field were analysed by the transmission electron microscope
Exclusive Decays and CP Violation in the General two-Higgs-doublet Model
We calculate all the branching ratios and direct CP violations of
decays in a most general two-Higgs-doublet model with spontaneous CP violation.
As the model has rich CP-violating sources, it is shown that the new physics
effects to direct CP violations and branching ratios in some channels can be
significant when adopting the generalized factorization approach to evaluate
the hadronic matrix elements, which provides good signals for probing new
physics beyond the SM in the future B experiments.Comment: 21 page
Calculation of composition distribution of ultrafine ion-H2O-H2SO4 clusters using a modified binary ion nucleation theory
Thomson's ion nucleation theory was modified to include the effects of curvature dependence of the microscopic surface tension of field dependent, nonlinear, dielectric properties of the liquid; and of sulfuric acid hydrate formation in binary mixtures of water and sulfuric acid vapors. The modified theory leads to a broadening of the ion cluster spectrum, and shifts it towards larger numbers of H2O and H2SO4 molecules. Whether there is more shifting towards larger numbers of H2O or H2SO4 molecules depends on the relative humidity and relative acidity of the mixture. Usually, a broadening of the spectrum is accompanied by a lowering of the mean cluster intensity. For fixed values of relative humidity and relative acidity, a similar broadening pattern is observed when the temperature is lowered. These features of the modified theory illustrate that a trace of sulfuric acid can facilitate the formation of ultrafine, stable, prenucleation ion clusters as well as the growth of the prenucleation ion clusters towards the critical saddle point conditions, even with low values of relative humidity and relative acidity
Generalized - Model
By parameterizing the t-j model we present a new electron correlation model
with one free parameter for high-temperature superconductivity. This model is
of symmetry. The energy spectrums are shown to be modulated by
the free parameter in the model. The solution and symmetric structures of the
Hilbert space, as well as the Bethe ansatz approach are discussed for special
cases.Comment: 13 page, Latex, to appear in J. Phys.
Research Program towards Observation of Neutrino-Nucleus Coherent Scattering
The article describes the research program pursued by the TEXONO
Collaboration towards an experiment to observe coherent scattering between
neutrinos and the nucleus at the power reactor. The motivations of studying
this process are surveyed. In particular, a threshold of 100-200 eV has been
achieved with an ultra-low-energy germanium detector prototype. This detection
capability at low energy can also be adapted to conduct searches of Cold Dark
Matter in the low-mass region as well as to enhance the sensitivities in the
study of neutrino magnetic moments.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures ; Proceedings of TAUP-2005 Workshop, Spain, 2005.

Spin Polarisability of the Nucleon in the Heavy Baryon Effective Field Theory
We have constructed a heavy baryon effective field theory with photon as an
external field in accordance with the symmetry requirements similar to the
heavy quark effective field theory. By treating the heavy baryon and
anti-baryon equally on the same footing in the effective field theory, we have
calculated the spin polarisabilities of the nucleon at
third order and at fourth-order of the spin-dependent Compton scattering. At
leading order (LO), our results agree with the corresponding results of the
heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, at the next-to-leading order(NLO) the
results show a large correction to the ones in the heavy baryon chiral
perturbation theory due to baryon-antibaryon coupling terms. The low energy
theorem is satisfied both at LO and at NLO. The contributions arising from the
heavy baryon-antibaryon vertex were found to be significant and the results of
the polarisabilities obtained from our theory is much closer to the
experimental data.Comment: 21pages, title changed, minimal correction
Challenges and barriers for first-year home and international students in Higher Education in the UK and Ireland: A scoping review
The challenges and barriers that occur when transitioning to university are widely acknowledged within the Higher Education (HE) sector (Thompson et al., 2021). Previous literature has focused extensively on the importance of breaking down barriers and cultivating a sense of belonging in order to generate student success (Daniels & McNeela, 2021; Thompson et al., 2021). There is also considerable research and literature surrounding the challenges and barriers that international students face (Gbadamosi, 2018). However, the direct comparisons between the challenges and barriers faced by home students and international students are less prominently researched. This scoping review aims to fill this gap by gathering literature on this topic and highlighting the similarities and differences between the challenges and barriers home and international students encounter
Secure Wireless Communications Based on Compressive Sensing: A Survey
IEEE Compressive sensing (CS) has become a popular signal processing technique and has extensive applications in numerous fields such as wireless communications, image processing, magnetic resonance imaging, remote sensing imaging, and anology to information conversion, since it can realize simultaneous sampling and compression. In the information security field, secure CS has received much attention due to the fact that CS can be regarded as a cryptosystem to attain simultaneous sampling, compression and encryption when maintaining the secret measurement matrix. Considering that there are increasing works focusing on secure wireless communications based on CS in recent years, we produce a detailed review for the state-of-the-art in this paper. To be specific, the survey proceeds with two phases. The first phase reviews the security aspects of CS according to different types of random measurement matrices such as Gaussian matrix, circulant matrix, and other special random matrices, which establishes theoretical foundations for applications in secure wireless communications. The second phase reviews the applications of secure CS depending on communication scenarios such as wireless wiretap channel, wireless sensor network, internet of things, crowdsensing, smart grid, and wireless body area networks. Finally, some concluding remarks are given
Spread Spectrum Based High Embedding Capacity Watermarking Method for Audio Signals
Audio watermarking is a promising technology for copyright protection of audio data. Built upon the concept of spread spectrum (SS), many SS-based audio watermarking methods have been developed, where a pseudonoise (PN) sequence is usually used to introduce security. A major drawback of the existing SS-based audio watermarking methods is their low embedding capacity. In this paper, we propose a new SS-based audio watermarking method which possesses much higher embedding capacity while ensuring satisfactory imperceptibility and robustness. The high embedding capacity is achieved through a set of mechanisms: embedding multiple watermark bits in one audio segment, reducing host signal interference on watermark extraction, and adaptively adjusting PN sequence amplitude in watermark embedding based on the property of audio segments. The effectiveness of the proposed audio watermarking method is demonstrated by simulation examples
