    PurposeEpidemiological evidence suggests that UV irradiation plays an important role in pterygium pathogenesis. UV irradiation can produce a wide range of DNA damage. The base excision repair (BER) pathway is considered the most important pathway involved in the repair of radiation-induced DNA damage. Based on previous studies, single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 8-oxoguanine glycosylase-1 (OGG1), X-ray repair cross-complementing-1 (XRCC1), and AP-endonuclease-1 (APE1) genes in the BER pathway have been found to affect the individual sensitivity to radiation exposure and induction of DNA damage. Therefore, we hypothesize that the genetic polymorphisms of these repair genes increase the risk of pterygium.MethodsXRCC1, APE1, and hOGG1 polymorphisms were studied using fluorescence-labeled Taq Man probes on 83 pterygial specimens and 206 normal controls.ResultsThere was a significant difference between the case and control groups in the XRCC1 genotype (p=0.038) but not in hOGG1 (p=0.383) and APE1 (p=0.898). The odds ratio of the XRCC1 A/G polymorphism was 2.592 (95% CI=1.225-5.484, p=0.013) and the G/G polymorphism was 1.212 (95% CI=0.914-1.607), compared to the A/A wild-type genotype. Moreover, individuals who carried at least one C-allele (A/G and G/G) had a 1.710 fold increased risk of developing pterygium compared to those who carried the A/A wild type genotype (OR=1.710; 95% CI: 1.015-2.882, p=0.044). The hOGG1 and APE1 polymorphisms did not have an increased odds ratio compared with the wild type.ConclusionsXRCC1 (Arg399 Glu) is correlated with pterygium and might become a potential marker for the prediction of pterygium susceptibility

    As the trunk plays a vital role during the golf full swing, it is important to understand how body movements affect the golf swing. The purpose of this study was to determine how golfers increase club head speed through trunk rotation. Trunk rotation patterns were captured by 3D motion capture system at 250 Hz. To investigate the effective factors of increasing club head speed, we compared two situations, swing at normal club head speed and at accelerated club head speed, via the trunk rotation angles at three dimensions through six temporary events. The results showed that subtle differences between normal club head speed and accelerated club head speed. To increase club head speed, golfers might optimize the separation between shoulder and pelvic in the early downswing

    This research uses Cross Correlation Function, C.C.F., as a dynamic relationship evaluation model to study the dynamic influences of the menstrual cycle on sport performances. This research takes females with a regular menstrual cycle to be the test subjects. Their basic body temperatures were recorded every day. A Kistler Quattro Jump force plate was used to record continuously for sixty days the parameters of muscular strength, jump performance, and fatigue index during the subjects performance of a counter-movement Jump (CMJ), squat Jump (SJ), and thirty-second continuous bent leg jumps (CJB). The late stage of the follicular phase and the early stage of the luteal phase have a positive influence on sport performance. This also illustrates that sport performance for female athletes will be varied dynamically in accordance with the time of menstrual cycle

    Outcome after endovascular stent graft treatment for mycotic aortic aneurysm: A systematic review

    BackgroundSurgical treatment for mycotic aortic aneurysms is not optimal. Even with a large excision, extensive debridement, in situ or extra-anatomical reconstruction, and with or without lifelong antibiotic treatment, mycotic aneurysms still carry very high mortality and morbidity. The use of endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for mycotic aortic aneurysms simplifies the procedure and provides a good alternative for this critical condition. However, the question remains: if EVAR is placed in an infected bed, what is the outcome of the infection? Does it heal, become aggravated, or even cause a disastrous aortic rupture? In this study, we tried to clarify the risk factors for such an adverse response.MethodsA literature review was undertaken by using MEDLINE. All relevant reports on endoluminal management of mycotic aortic aneurysms were included. Logistic regressions were applied to identify predictors of persistent infection.ResultsA total of 48 cases from 22 reports were included. The life-table analysis showed that the 30-day survival rate was 89.6% ± 4.4%, and the 2-year survival rate was 82.2% ± 5.8%. By univariate analysis, age 65 years or older, rupture of the aneurysm (including those with aortoenteric fistula and aortobronchial fistula), and fever at the time of operation were identified as significant predictors of persistent infection, and preoperative use of antibiotics for longer than 1 week and an adjunct procedure combined with EVAR were identified as significant protective factors for persistent infection. However, by multivariate logistic regression analysis, the only significant independent predictors identified were rupture of aneurysm and fever.ConclusionsEVAR seems a possible alternative method for treating mycotic aortic aneurysms. Identification of the risk factors for persistent infection may help to decrease surgical morbidity and mortality. EVAR could be used as a temporary measure; however, a definite surgical treatment should be considered for patients present with aneurysm rupture or fever

    In this paper, we present a P2P-based database sharing system that provides information sharing capabilities through keyword-based search techniques. Our system requires neither a global schema nor schema mappings between different databases, and our keyword-based search algorithms are robust in the presence of frequent changes in the content and membership of peers. To facilitate data integration, we introduce keyword join operator to combine partial answers containing different keywords into complete answers. We also present an efficient algorithm that optimize the keyword join operations for partial answer integration.     Information integration has been widely addressed over the last several decades. However, it is far from solved due to the complexity of resolving schema and data heterogeneities. In this paper, we propose out attempt to alleviate such difficulty by realizing keyword search functionality for integrating information from heterogeneous databases. Our solution does not require predefined global schema or any mappings between databases. Rather, it relies on an operator called keyword join to take a set of lists of partial answers from different data sources as input, and output a list of results that are joined by the tuples from input lists based on predefined similarity measures as integrated results. Our system allows source databases remain autonomous and the system to be dynamic and extensible.     FUT1 and FUT2 encode alpha 1, 2-fucosyltransferases which catalyze the addition of alpha 1, 2-linked fucose to glycans. Glycan products of FUT1 and FUT2, such as Globo H and Lewis Y, are highly expressed on malignant tissues, including breast cancer. Herein, we investigated the roles of FUT1 and FUT2 in breast cancer. Silencing of FUT1 or FUT2 by shRNAs inhibited cell proliferation in vitro and tumorigenicity in mice. This was associated with diminished properties of cancer stem cell (CSC), including mammosphere formation and CSC marker both in vitro and in xenografts. Silencing of FUT2, but not FUT1, significantly changed the cuboidal morphology to dense clusters of small and round cells with reduced adhesion to polystyrene and extracellular matrix, including laminin, fibronectin and collagen. Silencing of FUT1 or FUT2 suppressed cell migration in wound healing assay, whereas FUT1 and FUT2 overexpression increased cell migration and invasion in vitro and metastasis of breast cancer in vivo. A decrease in mesenchymal like markers such as fibronectin, vimentin, and twist, along with increased epithelial like marker, E-cadherin, was observed upon FUT1/2 knockdown, while the opposite was noted by overexpression of FUT1 or FUT2. As expected, FUT1 or FUT2 knockdown reduced Globo H, whereas FUT1 or FUT2 overexpression showed contrary effects. Exogenous addition of Globo H-ceramide reversed the suppression of cell migration by FUT1 knockdown but not the inhibition of cell adhesion by FUT2 silencing, suggesting that at least part of the effects of FUT1/2 knockdown were mediated by Globo H. Our results imply that FUT1 and FUT2 play important roles in regulating growth, adhesion, migration and CSC properties of breast cancer, and may serve as therapeutic targets for breast cancer
