    Do individual differences in need strength moderate the relations between basic psychological need satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior?

    An important theoretical debate in the literature on psychological needs concerns the potential moderating role of individuals’ need strength in the effects of basic psychological need satisfaction. The present study adds to the relatively small literature with inconsistent findings by examining whether the relations between work-related basic psychological need satisfaction (autonomy, competence, and relatedness) and organizational citizenship behavior (i.e., constructive voluntary job performance) are enhanced when employees’ work-specific explicit need strength increases. Survey data from two samples of employees in the United States (N = 353; MAge = 38.13) and in the Netherlands (N = 298; MAge = 44.57) consistently showed that across the need domains, need satisfaction was positively associated with organizational citizenship behavior through work engagement. However, we only found minor evidence for a moderating role of need strength. These findings largely endorse core self-determination theory assertions, as they underscore the relevance of employees’ psychological need satisfaction rather than fit between high psychological need satisfaction and high need strength in the workplace

    Epidemiology of burn patients admitted in the Netherlands:: a nationwide registry study investigating incidence rates and hospital admission from 2014 to 2018

    PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to gain insight into the epidemiology of burn patients admitted to a hospital without a burn center or referred to a burn center. METHODS: This retrospective, nationwide, cohort study included patients with burns or inhalation trauma, admitted between 2014 and 2018, from a national trauma registry. The primary outcome measure was admission to a hospital with or without a burn center. Secondary outcome measures were patient and injury characteristics, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) admission and length of stay, and hospital length of stay (HLOS). RESULTS: Of the 5524 included patients, 2787 (50.4%) were treated at a non-burn center, 1745 (31.6%) were subsequently transferred to a burn center, and 992 (18.0%) were primarily presented and treated at a burn center. The annual number of patients decreased from 1199 to 1055 (− 12.4%). At all admission locations, a clear incidence peak was observed in children ≤ 4 years and in patients of ≥ 80 years. The number of ICU admissions for the entire population increased from 201 to 233 (33.0%). The mean HLOS for the entire population was 8 (SD 14) days per patient. This number remained stable over the years in all groups. CONCLUSION: Half of all burn patients were admitted in a non-burn center and the other half in a burn center. The number and incidence rate of patients admitted with burns or inhalation trauma decreased over time. An increased incidence rate was found in children and elderly. The number of patients admitted to the ICU increased, whereas mean hospital length of stay remained stable.     The Link Between Employees' Sense of Vitality and Proactivity:Investigating the Moderating Role of Personal Fear of Invalidity

    Proactive behavior has emerged as a key component in contemporary views of individual work performance. Hence, a central question in the literature is how to enhance employees' proactive behavior. We investigated whether the more that employees experience a sense of vitality (i.e., energizing positive affect), the more likely they are to show proactive behavior at work, and whether this applies only to employees with a low personal fear of invalidity [(PFI) i.e., the inclination to be apprehensive about the risks/negative consequences of making errors]. Experimental (N= 354) and cross-sectional field (N= 85) studies provided consistent evidence for a positive relation between employees' sense of vitality at work and their self-rated proactivity. The predicted moderation effect was observed only for manager-rated proactivity. We conclude that feeling energized in the workplace is not necessarily associated with observable proactive behavior. It is only when employees experiencing a sense of vitality at work are not prone to fearing the risks/negative consequences of making errors that they are more likely to show observable proactive behavior in an organization

    Elements of care that matter:Perspectives of families with multiple problems

    The severe and often persistent problems of families with multiple problems (FMP) call for better understanding of how interventions can improve outcomes in these families. Perspectives of FMP on the crucial elements of interventions may strongly support improvement by providing cues on how to realize positive change. We therefore explored the views of parents and children in FMP regarding helpful and less helpful elements of various interventions. We interviewed 24 parents and 4 children about their perspectives, using a semi-structured interview guide comprising themes that were chosen by the target group. Participants reported 11 elements that contribute to the effectiveness of care, categorized under three main themes: the characteristics of the practitioner, the content of interventions, and the structure of interventions. The perspectives of FMP show the following activities to be promising: routine reflection on the non-judgmental and positive approach of practitioners, more direct focus on children, focus on the underlying cause of behavior, activation of families’ social network, the school and other professionals around the family, and creation of more possibilities for long-term and flexible support. Perspectives of FMP on the content and provision of care should be better embedded in interventions. This may help to tailor interventions to their wishes and needs, which in turn can contribute to more positive outcomes of care

    Toward tailored care for families with multiple problems:A quasi-experimental study on effective elements of care

    Several effective interventions have been developed for families with multiple problems (FMP), but knowledge is lacking as to which specific practice and program elements of these interventions deliver positive outcomes. The aim of this study is to assess the degree to which practice and program elements (contents of and structure in which care is provided) contribute to the effectiveness of interventions for FMP in general and for subgroups with child and/or parental psychiatric problems, intellectual disabilities, or substance use. We performed a quasi-experimental study on the effectiveness of practice and program elements provided in attested FMP interventions. Using self-report questionnaires, we measured primary (child's internalizing and externalizing problems) and secondary (parental stress and social contacts) outcomes at the beginning, end, and three months thereafter. By means of Latent Profile Analysis, we identified groups of families receiving similar combinations of practice elements ("profiles"), and we calculated propensity scores. Next, we assessed how practice element profiles and program elements affected improvement in outcomes, and whether these effects were moderated by subgroup characteristics. We found three practice element profiles (explorative/supportive, action-oriented, and their combination), which were equally effective. Regarding program elements, effects were enhanced by more frequent telephone contact between visits and more frequent intervision. Effectiveness of practice and program elements varied for specific FMP subgroups. Variations in the content of care for FMP do not affect its effectiveness, but variations in the structure of the care do. This finding can help to further improve effective interventions

    Adsorption and two-body recombination of atomic hydrogen on 3^3He-4^4He mixture films

    We present the first systematic measurement of the binding energy EaE_a of hydrogen atoms to the surface of saturated 3^3He-4^4He mixture films. EaE_a is found to decrease almost linearly from 1.14(1) K down to 0.39(1) K, when the population of the ground surface state of 3^3He grows from zero to 6×10146\times10^{14} cm−2^{-2}, yielding the value 1.2(1)×10−151.2(1)\times 10^{-15} K cm2^2 for the mean-field parameter of H-3^3He interaction in 2D. The experiments were carried out with overall 3^3He concentrations ranging from 0.1 ppm to 5 % as well as with commercial and isotopically purified 4^4He at temperatures 70...400 mK. Measuring by ESR the rate constants KaaK_{aa} and KabK_{ab} for second-order recombination of hydrogen atoms in hyperfine states aa and bb we find the ratio Kab/KaaK_{ab}/K_{aa} to be independent of the 3^3He content and to grow with temperature.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, all zipped in a sigle file.
