    Evaluation of the natural draught cooling tower shell using linearly and non-linearly numerical analysis

    The shell shape of the natural cooling tower determines the sensitivity of the whole structure against wind excitation. This study analyses influence of the tower shell geometric parameters on the structural behavior, evaluated by linearly and nonlinearly numerical analyses. The goal of the study is to give an informative statement for the form-finding process of the cooling tower shell in the engineering practice. The generated 32 towers from an existing cooling tower are linearly analyzed base on the natural frequency. Further three representative models were selected, they were analyzed based on the buckling factor and the reinforced amount required according to a design guideline. The hyperbolic shell with overall radii as small as possible yielded not only a higher first natural frequency, thus less wind-insensitivity, but also a safer buckling behavior and a economical design due to less requirement of concrete and reinforcement. This advantageous structural behavior could be consistently verified in the nonlinear analysis, evaluated by load-deformation curves and damage indices based on the natural frequencies and modal contribution factors

    Sympathetic withdrawal is associated with hypotension after hepatic reperfusion

    Objective: Post-reperfusion syndrome (PRS), severe hypotension after graft reperfusion during liver transplantation, is an adverse clinical event associated with poorer patient outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine whether alterations in autonomic control in liver transplant recipients prior to graft reperfusion are associated with the subsequent development of PRS. Methods: Heart rate variability (HRV), systolic arterial blood pressure (SBP) variability, and baroreflex sensitivity of 218 liver transplant recipients were evaluated using 5 min of ECG and arterial blood pressure signals 10 min before graft reperfusion along with other clinical parameters. Logistic regression analyses were performed to assess predictors of PRS occurrence. Results: Seventy-seven patients (35 %) developed PRS while 141 did not. There were significant differences in SBP (110 ± 16 vs. 119 ± 16 mmHg, P < 0.001) and the ratio of low frequency power to high frequency power (LF/HF) of HRV (1.0 ± 1.4 vs. 2.1 ± 3.7, P = 0.003) between the PRS group and No-PRS group. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, predictors were LF/HF (odds ratio 0.817, P = 0.028) and SBP (odds ratio 0.966, P < 0.001). Interpretation: Low LF/HF and SBP measured before hepatic graft reperfusion were significantly correlated with subsequent PRS occurrence, suggesting that sympathovagal imbalance and depressed SBP may be key factors predisposing to reperfusion-related severe hypotension in liver transplant recipients

    Performance and Growth of Large Firms in China

    This study examines the impacts of several factors, such as internal capital markets, technology transfer via FDI, and in-house R&D activities on the performance and growth of firms using data gathered from the top 200 companies in China during the period 1998-2003. A finance company, as an affiliate in the business group, is used as proxy for the internal capital market. The foreign joint venture firms and in-house research center are used as proxies for technology transfer and for the existence of in-house R&D activities, respectively. This paper finds that having foreign joint ventures is positively correlated with the firms growth but not with the financial and market performance of firms. In contrast, doing in-house R&D activities is positively correlated with the financial and market performances, as well as the growth of firms

    Does Self Management in Fisheries Enhance Profitability? Examination of Korea’s Coastal Fisheries

    Self management of natural resources has started to gain increasing attention as an alternative tool to command-and-control and market-based tools, but the fundamental question remains: is self management economically beneficial such that it should be promoted in the first place? This article uses a unique set of survey data from South Korea and applies an empirical strategy to provide some of the first quantitative evidence that self management is benefiting the fishermen. We find that positive benefits of fishery self management—an increase in fishery revenue and reduction in cost—are perceived by member fishermen, which is a good start considering the average number of years since the establishment of these self-management groups is only about seven. Empirical results of the magnitude of change in profit showed some consistent results, although the estimates were not as robust. These results suggest that the impact of fishery self management is still in progress. Thus, the government should maintain its current position to support self management as the country’s fishery management policy

    Self-governance of natural resources has started to gain increasing attention as an alternative to command-and-control and market-based tools. However, a fundamental question remains: is self-governance economically beneficial, allowing it to serve as an alternative management tool? This paper uses a unique set of survey data from a territorial-user-right-based South Korean inshore (maul) fishery and applies an empirical strategy to provide some of the first quantitative evidence that self-governance benefits maul fishermen.We find that members of the self-governance group perceive the management system as having had a positive impact on four out of the eight criteria we tested: stock recovery, curtailed fishing effort, reduced disputes among fishermen and declining incidents of illegal fishing. Considering that these groups have been in existence on average for less than seven years, these results indicate that the management scheme has made good progress overall

    The Mechanisms of Nuclear Proteotoxicity in Polyglutamine Spinocerebellar Ataxias

    Polyglutamine (polyQ) spinocerebellar ataxias (SCAs) are the most prevalent subset of SCAs and share the aberrant expansion of Q-encoding CAG repeats within the coding sequences of disease-responsible genes as their common genetic cause. These polyQ SCAs (SCA1, SCA2, SCA3, SCA6, SCA7, and SCA17) are inherited neurodegenerative diseases characterized by the progressive atrophy of the cerebellum and connected regions of the nervous system, which leads to loss of fine muscle movement coordination. Upon the expansion of polyQ repeats, the mutated proteins typically accumulate disproportionately in the neuronal nucleus, where they sequester various target molecules, including transcription factors and other nuclear proteins. However, it is not yet clearly understood how CAG repeat expansion takes place or how expanded polyQ proteins accumulate in the nucleus. In this article, we review the current knowledge on the molecular and cellular bases of nuclear proteotoxicity of polyQ proteins in SCAs and present our perspectives on the remaining issues surrounding these diseases. © Copyright © 2020 Lee, Lee, Lee and Lee.1
