Structure analysis of single- and multi-frequency subspace migrations in inverse scattering problems
In this literature, we carefully investigate the structure of single- and
multi-frequency imaging functions, that are usually employed in inverse
scattering problems. Based on patterns of the singular vectors of the
Multi-Static Response (MSR) matrix, we establish a relationship between imaging
functions and the Bessel function. This relationship indicates certain
properties of imaging functions and the reason behind enhancement in the
imaging performance by multiple frequencies. Several numerical simulations with
a large amount of noisy data are performed in order to support our
investigation.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure
Classroom Readiness for Successful Inclusion: Teacher Factors and Preschool Childrenās Experience with and Attitudes toward Peers with Disabilities
The current study examined (1) associations among teachersā experiences regarding children with disabilities (i.e., education, specialized training, years of work experience), their attitudes toward disabilities, and their classroom practices in relation to inclusion and (2) associations among childrenās attitudes toward peers with disabilities and child and teacher factors. Ninety-one 4- and 5-year-old children participated in an interview, and their teachers completed a survey. Teachersā specialized training and bachelorās degree in early childhood education (ECE) were positively associated with their inclusive practices in the classroom; teachersā bachelorās degree in ECE and experiences working with children with disabilities were positively associated with their attitudes toward disabilities and inclusion; and childrenās perceived contact with people who have disabilities was positively associated their attitudes toward peers with disabilities. However, none of the teacher factors predicted childrenās attitudes toward peers with disabilities. Early childhood teachers need more training opportunities to learn about disabilities to develop positive attitudes toward disabilities and inclusion. Providing frequent contact with people with disabilities may enhance childrenās acceptance of peers with disabilities
Alpha-tocopherol exerts protective function against the mucotoxicity of particulate matter in amphibian and human goblet cells
Exposure to particulate matter (PM) in ambient air is known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disorders and mortality. The cytotoxicity of PM is mainly due to the abnormal increase of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage cellular components such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. The correlation between PM exposure and human disorders, including mortality, is based on long-term exposure. In this study we have investigated acute responses of mucus-secreting goblet cells upon exposure to PM derived from a heavy diesel engine. To this end, we employed the mucociliary epithelium of amphibian embryos and human Calu-3 cells to examine PM mucotoxicity. Our data suggest that acute exposure to PM significantly impairs mucus secretion and results in the accumulation of mucus vesicles in the cytoplasm of goblet cells. RNA-seq analysis revealed that acute responses to PM exposure significantly altered gene expression patterns; however, known regulators of mucus production and the secretory pathway were not significantly altered. Interestingly, pretreatment with alpha-tocopherol nearly recovered the hyposecretion of mucus from both amphibian and human goblet cells. We believe this study demonstrates the mucotoxicity of PM and the protective function of alpha-tocopherol on mucotoxicity caused by acute PM exposure from heavy diesel engines
Self-rated health and risk of incident non-alcoholic fatty liver disease:A cohort study
Although self-rated health (SRH), a subjective measure of overall health status, associates with metabolic abnormalities, studies on the relationship between SRH and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome, are limited. In this study, we evaluated whether or not SRH predicts the risk of incident NAFLD. This cohort study was performed in a sample of 148,313 Korean adults free of ultrasound-diagnosed NAFLD at baseline with annual or biennial follow-up for a median of 3.7 years. SRH and NAFLD were measured at baseline and follow-up visits. NAFLD was determined based on the ultrasound-diagnosed fatty liver without excessive alcohol consumption or any other cause. Hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals were estimated via a parametric proportional hazards model. During 522,696.1 person-years of follow-up, 23,855 individuals with new-onset NAFLD were identified (incidence rate, 45.6 per 1,000 person-years). After adjustments for possible confounders including total calorie intake, sleep duration, and depressive symptoms, the multivariate-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for incident NAFLD comparing good, fair, and poor or very poor SRH to very good SRH were 1.06 (0.97-1.14), 1.18 (1.09-1.27), and 1.24 (1.13-1.37), respectively. This association of SRH with incident NAFLD remained significant after accounting for changes in SRH and confounders during follow-up and was similar across clinically relevant subgroups. In a large-scale cohort study of apparently healthy Korean adults, poor SRH was independently and positively associated with incident NAFLD risk, indicating a predictive role of SRH as a health measure in NAFLD.</p
Pressure changes in the endotracheal tube cuff in otorhinolaryngologic surgery: a prospective observational study
ObjectiveInflation of the endotracheal tube cuff is needed for providing ventilation. Cuff pressure should be maintained inside the appropriate range to prevent critical airway complications. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the pressure changes in the endotracheal tube cuff during otorhinolaryngologic surgery.Design and methodThis single-center observational study was conducted at Severance Hospital in Korea between April 2020 and November 2020. Patients aged >20 years scheduled to undergo otorhinolaryngological surgical procedures were enrolled. Patients undergoing planned tracheostomy and those who were slated for uncuffed endotracheal tube use were excluded. Intubation was performed after the induction of general anesthesia. A pressure transducer was connected to the pilot balloon of the endotracheal tube, and cuff pressure was continuously monitored until extubation. If the cuff pressure was not appropriate for more than 5 min, it was adjusted to the appropriate range by injecting or removing air. The percentage of time for which the cuff pressure remained within the appropriate range was calculated and defined as the time in the therapeutic range (TTR). The presumed cause for the rise or fall in cuff pressure was identified.ResultsIn total 199 patients, alterations in cuff pressure outside the appropriate range occurred in 191 patients (96.0%). The mean TTR was 79.7% (SD 25.0%), and head and neck surgery had the lowest mean TTR of 69.0% compared to ear and nose surgeries (94.2 and 82.1%, respectively). Sixty-eight patients (34.2%) demonstrated inadequate endotracheal tube cuff pressure for more than 20% of the total anesthesia time. Twenty-six patients (13.1%) demonstrated optimal endotracheal tube cuff pressure for less than 50% of the total anesthesia time. The causative factors inducing inappropriate cuff pressure were found to vary, including positional changes, surgical procedure, anatomical manipulation, and anesthetic procedure.ConclusionIn otorhinolaryngologic surgery, cuff pressure increased or decreased outside the appropriate range due to various factors. Therefore, we suggest close continuous monitoring of cuff pressure during anesthesia for otorhinolaryngologic surgery.Clinical trial registrationclinicaltrials.gov, identifier NCT03938493
A case of gangliocytic paraganglioma in the ampulla of Vater
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Duodenal gangliocytic paraganglioma is an extremely rare tumor and few cases have been reported to date.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>The authors report a case of gangliocytic paraganglioma verified by post-op pathology after pancreaticoduodenectomy for a tumor in the ampulla of Vater. The 56-year-old male patient concerned visited our emergency room with melena that started one week prior to hospitalization. The patient was diagnosed to have a tumor in the ampulla of Vater with bleeding on its surface. However post-op, he was diagnosed as having gangliocytic paraganglioma by immunohistochemistry.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This tumor has precise clinical implications, and if continuous follow up is conducted after careful diagnosis and surgical treatment, invasive major operations, such as, radical pancreaticoduodenectomy can be avoided.</p
Input of terrestrial organic matter linked to deglaciation increased mercury transport to the Svalbard fjords
Deglaciation has accelerated the transport of minerals as well as modern and ancient organic matter from land to fjord sediments in Spitsbergen, Svalbard, in the European Arctic Ocean. Consequently, such sediments may contain significant levels of total mercury (THg) bound to terrestrial organic matter. The present study compared THg contents in surface sediments from three fjord settings in Spitsbergen: Hornsund in the southern Spitsbergen, which has high annual volume of loss glacier and receives sediment from multiple tidewater glaciers, Dicksonfjorden in the central Spitsbergen, which receives sediment from glacifluvial rivers, and Wijdefjorden in the northern Spitsbergen, which receive sediments from a mixture of tidewater glaciers and glacifluvial rivers. Our results showed that the THg (52 +/- 15 ng g(-1)) bound to organic matter (OM) was the highest in the Hornsund surface sediments, where the glacier loss (0.44 km(3) yr(-1)) and organic carbon accumulation rates (9.3 similar to 49.4 g m(-2) yr(-1)) were elevated compared to other fjords. Furthermore, the delta C-13 (-27 similar to -24 parts per thousand) and delta S-34 values (-10 similar to 15 parts per thousand) of OM indicated that most of OM were originated from terrestrial sources. Thus, the temperature-driven glacial melting could release more OM originating from the meltwater or terrestrial materials, which are available for THg binding in the European Arctic fjord ecosystems.11Ysciescopu
Performance evaluation of water-repellent combat uniforms using a static manikin and human subjects under a rainfall tower system
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the water-repellent properties of newly-developed combat uniforms using a rainfall tower system. Two types of water-repellent- combat uniforms with an identical level of water repellency through textile tests (WR_M and WR_T) were compared with an untreated-combat uniform (Control). A static manikin was used to evaluate water-repellent properties in a standing position and eight male subjects participated to test walking effects under artificial rainfall. The results showed that it took to saturate the upper body was longer for WR_T than WR_M and Control in the standing position for both normal and heavy rain conditions (Pā<ā0.05). The lower body in WR_T was rarely wet in the standing position after 60Ā min, whereas the lower body was partially wet while walking within 30Ā min. Changes in clothing weight after the rainfall test were 729āĀ±ā21, 256āĀ±ā36 and 137āĀ±ā25Ā g per trial for Control, WR_M, and WR_T, respectively (Pā<ā0.001). Subjects expressed better tactile, less colder, less heavier, and less humid sensations and less uncomfortable feeling for WR_T than Control or WR_M (Pā<ā0.05), while WR_M was better only for tactile sensation and heaviness than Control (Pā<ā0.05). Ten-time-washes had not impaired the water-repellent properties of WR_M or WR_T. These results indicated that the rainfall tower test is valid to verify water-repellent property of clothing ensemble and suggest a possibility of classifying the water repellency of clothing ensemble into sub-levels of an excellent and a fair class. Further studies on wider range of experimental conditions to validate the current results are required. This study is funded by Defense Agency for Technology and Quality (20190907EA7-00
