A List of Wisconsin Springtails With New Records and Annotations (Hexapoda: Parainsecta: Collembola)
Twenty Collembola species new to Wisconsin were collected from soil at two agricultural sites in southern Wisconsin, including an undescribed species of Isotomidae. The state faunal list now contains 52 species representing seven families
Aerosol studies in mid-latitude coastal environments in Australia
The results of the evaluation of several inversion procedures that were used to select one which provides the most accurate atmospheric extinction profiles for small aerosol extinction coefficients (that often predominate in the maritime airmass) are presented. Height profiles of atmospheric extinction calculated by a two component atmospheric solution to the LIDAR equation will be compared with corresponding in-situ extinction profiles based on the size distribution profiles obtained in Western Australia. Values of the aerosol backscatter to extinction ratio obtained from multi-angle LIDAR measurements will be used in this solution
One nanosecond time synchronization using series and GPS
Subnanosecond time sychronization between two remote rubidium frequency standards is verified by a traveling clock comparison. Using a novel, code ignorant Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver developed at JPL, the SERIES geodetic baseline measurement system is applied to establish the offset between the 1 Hz. outputs of the remote standards. A Spectropolarimetric Atlas of Seyfert 1 Galaxies
We present optical spectropolarimetry of the nuclei of 36 Seyfert 1 galaxies,
obtained with the William Herschel and the Anglo-Australian Telescopes from
1996 to 1999. In 20 of these, the optical emission from the active nucleus is
intrinsically polarized. We have measured a significant level of polarization
in a further 7 objects but these may be heavily contaminated by Galactic
interstellar polarization. The intrinsically polarized Seyfert 1s exhibit a
variety of characteristics, with the average polarization ranging from < 0.5 to
5 per cent and many showing variations in both the degree and position angle of
polarization across the broad H alpha emission line. We identify a small group
of Seyfert 1s that exhibit polarization properties similar to those of Seyfert
2 galaxies in which polarized broad-lines have been discovered. These objects
represent direct observational evidence that a Seyfert 2-like far-field polar
scattering region is also present in Seyfert 1s. Several other objects have
features that can be explained in terms of equatorial scattering of line
emission from a rotating disk. We propose that much of the diversity in the
polarization properties of Seyfert galaxies can be understood in terms of a
model involving both equatorial and polar scattering, the relative importance
of the two geometries as sources of polarized light being determined
principally by the inclination of the system axis to the line-of-sight.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (28 pages, 25 figures
Hydrogen in Type Ic Supernovae?
By definition, a Type Ic supernova (SN Ic) does not have conspicuous lines of
hydrogen or helium in its optical spectrum. SNe Ic usually are modelled in
terms of the gravitational collapse of bare carbon-oxygen cores. We consider
the possibility that the spectra of ordinary (SN 1994I-like) SNe Ic have been
misinterpreted, and that SNe Ic eject hydrogen. An absorption feature usually
attributed to a blend of Si II 6355 and C II 6580 may be produced by H-alpha.
If SN 1994I-like SNe Ic eject hydrogen, the possibility that hypernova (SN
1998bw-like) SNe Ic, some of which are associated with gamma-ray bursts, also
eject hydrogen should be considered. The implications of hydrogen for SN Ic

Far-infrared imaging of tokamak plasma
A 20-channel interferometer has been developed which utilizes a linear, one-dimensional microbolometer array to obtain single-shot density profiles from the UCLA Microtor tokamak plasma. The interferometer has been used to study time-dependent phenomena in the plasma density profile. Observations of the sawtooth instability clearly show the growth of the m=0 mode from a localized oscillation (r=1 cm) on axis to an oscillation of the entire plasma. Also, measurements during the initial startup phase of the discharge show evidence of hollow density profiles. In addition, a simultaneous measurement of the poloidal magnetic field has been developed which provides 20 channels of polarimetry. Interferometry and polarimetry both use the same imaging system and the spatial resolution of both measurements has been tested using plastic and crystal-quartz test objects. The signal-to-noise ratio for the polarimeter has also proved adequate for the expected Faraday rotation angle (alphamax=7°, Ip=70 kA, n=5×10^13 cm^−3)
