Young neutron stars with soft gamma ray emission and anomalous X-ray pulsar
The observational properties of Soft Gamma Repeaters and Ano\-malous X-ray
Pulsars (SGR/AXP) indicate to necessity of the energy source different from a
rotational energy of a neutron star. The model, where the source of the energy
is connected with a magnetic field dissipation in a highly magnetized neutron
star (magnetar) is analyzed. Some observational inconsistencies are indicated
for this interpretation. The alternative energy source, connected with the
nuclear energy of superheavy nuclei stored in the nonequilibrium layer of low

Altered Ratios of Beta-Endorphin : Beta-Lipotropin Released from Anterior Lobe Corticotropes with Increased Secretory Drive. I. Effects of Diminished Glucocorticoid Secretion
Previous studies have demonstrated that acute stress or ovine corticotropin-releasing hormone (oCRH) in vivo , or oCRH in vitro , stimulates release of Β-endorphin over Β-lipotropin from anterior pituitary corticotropes. This occurs despite the predominance of Β-lipotropin in corticotrope peptide stores. In vitro studies with primary anterior pituitary cultures suggested that chronic exposure to oCRH results in a shift towards more Β-lipotropin secretion into the media than with short-term exposure. The current studies explored whether increased secretory drive in vivo results in a similar shift towards more Β-lipotropin. We used removal of glucocorticoids by adrenalectomy or metyrapone blockade of corticosterone synthesis, to stimulate endogenous secretion of CRH and vasopressin. Both treatments resulted in shifts of the ratio of Β-endorphin: Β-lipotropin in plasma of experimental animals in comparison to the sham-treated control rats. In vitro testing with oCRH of anterior lobe cultures from adrenalectomized or metyrapone-treated rats demonstrated similar effects of these treatments on the ratio of Β-endorphin : Β-lipotropin. Tracing Noble Gas Radionuclides in the Environment
Trace analysis of radionuclides is an essential and versatile tool in modern
science and technology. Due to their ideal geophysical and geochemical
properties, long-lived noble gas radionuclides, in particular, 39Ar (t1/2 = 269
yr), 81Kr (t1/2 = 2.3x10^5 yr) and 85Kr (t1/2 = 10.8 yr), have long been
recognized to have a wide range of important applications in Earth sciences. In
recent years, significant progress has been made in the development of
practical analytical methods, and has led to applications of these isotopes in
the hydrosphere (tracing the flow of groundwater and ocean water). In this
article, we introduce the applications of these isotopes and review three
leading analytical methods: Low-Level Counting (LLC), Accelerator Mass
Spectrometry (AMS) and Atom Trap Trace Analysis (ATTA)
An evaluation of enteral nutrition practices and nutritional provision in children during the entire length of stay in critical care
<b>Background</b>
Provision of optimal nutrition in children in critical care is often challenging. This study evaluated exclusive enteral nutrition (EN) provision practices and explored predictors of energy intake and delay of EN advancement in critically ill children.<p></p>
<b>Methods</b>
Data on intake and EN practices were collected on a daily basis and compared against predefined targets and dietary reference values in a paediatric intensive care unit. Factors associated with intake and advancement of EN were explored.<p></p>
<b>Results</b>
Data were collected from 130 patients and 887 nutritional support days (NSDs). Delay to initiate EN was longer in patients from both the General Surgical and congenital heart defect (CHD) Surgical groups [Median (IQR); CHD Surgical group: 20.3 (16.4) vs General Surgical group: 11.4 (53.5) vs Medical group: 6.5 (10.9) hours; p <= 0.001]. Daily fasting time per patient was significantly longer in patients from the General Surgical and CHD Surgical groups than those from the Medical group [% of 24 h, Median (IQR); CHD Surgical group: 24.0 (29.2) vs General Surgical group: 41.7 (66.7) vs Medical group: 9.4 (21.9); p <= 0.001]. A lower proportion of fluids was delivered as EN per patient (45% vs 73%) or per NSD (56% vs 73%) in those from the CHD Surgical group compared with those with medical conditions. Protein and energy requirements were achieved in 38% and 33% of the NSDs. In a substantial proportion of NSDs, minimum micronutrient recommendations were not met particularly in those patients from the CHD Surgical group. A higher delivery of fluid requirements (p < 0.05) and a greater proportion of these delivered as EN (p < 0.001) were associated with median energy intake during stay and delay of EN advancement. Fasting (31%), fluid restriction (39%) for clinical reasons, procedures requiring feed cessation and establishing EN (22%) were the most common reasons why target energy requirements were not met.<p></p>
<b>Conclusions</b>
Provision of optimal EN support remains challenging and varies during hospitalisation and among patients. Delivery of EN should be prioritized over other "non-nutritional" fluids whenever this is possible.<p></p>
Wake response to an ocean-feedback mechanism: Madeira Island case study
This discussion focused on the numerical study of a wake episode. The Weather
Research and Forecasting model was used in a downscale mode. The current
literature focuses the discussion on the adiabatic dynamics of atmospheric
wakes. Changes in mountain height and consequently on its relation to the
atmospheric inversion layer should explain the shift in wake regimes: from a
'strong-wake' to a 'weak-wake' scenario. Nevertheless, changes in SST
variability can also induce similar regime shifts. Increase in evaporation,
contributes to increase convection and thus to an uplift of the stratified
atmospheric layer, above the critical height, with subsequent internal gravity

Mistletoe treatment in cancer-related fatigue: a case report
Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a major and very common disabling condition in cancer patients. Treatment options do exist but have limited therapeutic effects. Mistletoe extracts are widely-used complementary cancer treatments whose possible impact on CRF has not been investigated in detail. A 36-year-old Swedish woman with a 10-year history of recurrent breast cancer, suffering from severe CRF, started complementary cancer treatment with mistletoe extracts. Over two and a half years a correspondence was observed between the intensity of mistletoe therapy and the fatigue. Mistletoe extracts seemed to have a beneficial, dose-dependent effect on CRF. Although such effect has also been noted in clinical studies, it has never been the subject of detailed investigation. More research should clarify these observations

Revisiting Scalar and Pseudoscalar Couplings with Nucleons
Certain dark matter interactions with nuclei are mediated possibly by a
scalar or pseudoscalar Higgs boson. The estimation of the corresponding cross
sections requires a correct evaluation of the couplings between the scalar or
pseudoscalar Higgs boson and the nucleons. Progress has been made in two
aspects relevant to this study in the past few years. First, recent lattice
calculations show that the strange-quark sigma term and the
strange-quark content in the nucleon are much smaller than what are expected
previously. Second, lattice and model analyses imply sizable SU(3) breaking
effects in the determination on the axial-vector coupling constant that
in turn affect the extraction of the isosinglet coupling and the
strange quark spin component from polarized deep inelastic
scattering experiments. Based on these new developments, we re-evaluate the
relevant nucleon matrix elements and compute the scalar and pseudoscalar
couplings of the proton and neutron. We also find that the strange quark
contribution in both types of couplings is smaller than previously thought.Comment: 17 pages, Sec. II is revised and the pion-nucleon sigma term
