Young tableaux, canonical bases and the Gindikin-Karpelevich formula

A combinatorial description of the crystal B(infinity) for finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras in terms of certain Young tableaux was developed by J. Hong and H. Lee. We establish an explicit bijection between these Young tableaux and canonical bases indexed by Lusztig's parametrization, and obtain a combinatorial rule for expressing the Gindikin-Karpelevich formula as a sum over the set of Young tableaux.Comment: 19 page

The Body and the City: Re-Envisioning Hong Kong Through Protest Poetry

    Get PDF
In a time of civil unrest in Hong Kong starting summer of 2019, Hong Kong citizens have navigated a shift in identity and their political social climate. Beginning in early summer of 2019, protests broke out around Hong Kong in response to the Hong Kong government\u27s proposal of an Extradition Bill, which ultimately would allow Hong Kong legal power to extradite fugitives to territories where it doesn\u27t have formal extradition deals, including mainland China, Taiwan and Macau (Hollingsworth, 2019). The poems examined in this essay convey what it means to be a citizen of Hong Kong during a time of social and political unrest. Through close reading and analysis of recent poems published in 2019 to the present both in English and Chinese, this research demonstrates how indigenous progressive poets create new interpretations of bodily images through protest poetry, using personification of the city and concrete images of limbs, blood, and the youth to bespeak the disembodiment of political ideals that Hong Kong citizens are experiencing. Hong Kong poets\u27 creative ramifications of body politics in protest poetry from 2019 to the present indicate not only a vision of themselves as constituting members of the city\u27s political landscape, but also a perception of the body as a site of affective experience and change. Because the city is collectively experiencing the protests, the personification of Hong Kong as a single body proves to be an effective approach in demonstrating the cultural and political shifts. Against the backdrop of Hong Kong\u27s rapidly changing political scene, these poems articulate disembodiment, frustration, and yearning for new ideals of identity and citizenship.https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/fsrs2020/1099/thumbnail.jp

Restricting Basic Law Rights in Hong Kong

    Get PDF
In Bahadur v Director of Immigration, the Court of Final Appeal considered the question of whether rights found in Hong Kong's constitution, the Basic Law, are subject to restrictions. Bahadur concerned the right of residents to travel and enter Hong Kong, which is found in the Basic Law but not in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) as applied to Hong Kong. To its credit, the Court eschewed an approach making such rights subordinate to ordinary legislation. Questions concerning the approach to restrictions on parallel Basic Law rights, ie Basic Law rights that have a parallel right in the ICCPR as applied to Hong Kong, have yet to be determined. It is argued here that these rights and their possible restrictions should have an autonomous interpretation and not have to conform to the minimum standards in the ICCPR.published_or_final_versio

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Rise of Hedge Fund Activist Shareholders and the Duty Of Loyalty

    Get PDF
Shareholder activism has been a growing problem in the corporate world, creating numerous dilemmas for the board of directors of companies. Activist shareholders can unsettle a company, pressuring the directors to make decisions according to the course of business the activists would prefer, and thus interfering with the traditional role of directors as the decision-makers of a company. With this new development in the business world, legal scholars have been debating if this activism needs to be controlled and, if so, what measures can be taken to reach a balance. This Note examines the traditional corporate principles such as the shareholder primacy theory and the principle of “one share, one vote,” evaluating the benefits and the costs of adhering to these theories amidst the changing landscape in the business and legal world. This Note then proposes that the traditional concept of the duty of loyalty can be applied to activist shareholders, much like it has been applied to the directors and majority shareholders in the past, based on a fact-by-fact analysis

McGrath on Evidence is a new and impressive treatise on the law of evidence in Ireland. The use of a wide range of jurisprudence from across the common law world makes the book much more than a text on Irish law. There is a remarkable degree of similarity between the law in Ireland and Hong Kong. Practitioners in Hong Kong and beyond are sure to find useful examples and ideas within this book.published_or_final_versio

Role of the Criminal Law in Maintaining Hong Kong as an International Financial Centre

    Get PDF
While criminal law is an essential part of the legal environment used to maintain Hong Kong’s status as an international financial centre (IFC), its role is limited. Criminal law and processes are reserved for serious cases that involve the protection of property rights, economic interests, or the integrity of the financial system. Deterrent and remedial civil processes are increasingly being used as a more effective way to enforce law designed to maintain Hong Kong’s IFC status.postprin

Colorectal carcinoma in Hong Kong: epidemiology and genetic mutations.

    Get PDF
The incidence of colorectal carcinoma is rising at an alarming pace in Asian urban societies such as Hong Kong. Detailed examination of the epidemiological pattern and genetic mutation of colorectal cancer in the Hong Kong Chinese population is overdue. We compared the reported age incidence of colorectal carcinoma in Hong Kong with that of Scotland and other countries. Hong Kong showed a much higher incidence of colorectal carcinoma among the young age groups. By comparison with other countries, this raised incidence among the young appeared to be related to southern Chinese societies. The recent dramatic rise in colorectal cancer in Hong Kong was largely attributable to an increase in the over 50 years age group, while the young incidence remained unchanged. We also defined the mutation spectrum of p53 and Ki-ras in 67 unselected cases by direct DNA sequencing. Interestingly, insertion/deletion mutations in p53 from colorectal carcinoma in Hong Kong showed a significantly higher frequency (17.2%) than the Scottish data (0%) and the world database (6.6%), although the overall frequency of p53 mutation (43%) in Hong Kong was similar to others. The high incidence of colorectal carcinoma in young people and the raised proportion of frameshift mutations in p53 encourage further search for a genetic basis for susceptibility to this disease in the Hong Kong Chinese population

Report on Reforming Suspended Sentences in Hong Kong

    Get PDF
This report is from a study of the suspended sentence power in Hong Kong undertaken by the Centre for Comparative and Public Law at the request of the Law Society of Hong Kong (LSHK). Members of the LSHK’s Criminal Law and Procedure Committee have been concerned about the list of exceptions to the suspended sentence power. The purpose of this report is to inform members of that Committee of the background and law on the suspended sentence power and to aid their ongoing discussion of the topic with the Law Reform Commission of Hong Kong. The study focuses specifically on the exceptions to the power of the courts of Hong Kong to impose suspended sentences under the Criminal Procedure Ordinance (Cap 221) (CPO). The study will consider arguments for maintaining, abolishing or reforming the list of excepted offences for which offenders cannot receive a suspended sentence of imprisonment regardless of circumstances. In doing so, the project will examine the nature of judicial power to order suspended sentences or their equivalent in the following jurisdictions: Australia (Victoria), New Zealand, Canada, Singapore, and the United Kingdom (UK). It will also provide the historical context in which Hong Kong introduced the suspended sentence of imprisonment, and the rationale for excepting the offences listed in Schedule 3 of the CPO.postprin
