Extending the Conversation: New Technologies, New Literacies, and English Education

    Get PDF
The authors contend that new technologies have developed new literacies and new ways of thinking that are reshaping our lives. In the rapidly changing world, they argue, these new literacies and their practices must become central to effective English education programs. To frame their argument, they introduce the notion of technological pedagogical content knowledge to bridge the perceived binary of technology and English education. Throughout, they analyze how reflection on new technologies and integration of them into coursework for specific purposes is an educational, political, and even a moral imperative

Polymer impregnated concrete and polymer concrete overlays

The feasibility of impregnating bridge decks with methylmethacrylate for protection against freeze-thaw deteriorization and corrosion of the reinforcing steel is reported. Parameters such as monomer system, monomer loading, drying temperature and time, curing temperature and time, soak time and equipment were investigated and dicussed. A nondestructive method for the determination of the polymer depth in a polymer impregnated concrete was investigated and reported. The three methods that are presently used to place polymer concrete overlay on bridge decks were tested and compared with each other.Final ReportN

Grounded Technology Integration: Instructional Planning Using Curriculum-Based Activity Type Taxonomies

    Get PDF
Technological pedagogical content knowledge (tpck or tpack) – the highly practical professional educational knowledge that enables and supports technology integration – is comprised of teachers’ concurrent and interdependent curriculum content, general pedagogy, and technological understanding. Teachers’ planning – which expresses teachers’ professional knowledge (including tpack) in pragmatic ways -- is situated, contextually sensitive, routinized, and activity-based. To assist with technology integration, therefore, we suggest using what is understood from research about teachers’ knowledge and instructional planning to form an approach to curriculum-based technology integration that is predicated upon teachers combining technologically supported learning activity types selected from content-keyed activity type taxonomies. In this article, we describe this approach to curriculum-based technology integration, illustrating it with overviews of and examples from six curriculum-based learning activity types taxonomies that have been developed to date. We invite our readers to vet and use these materials, which are available on the activity types Wiki (http://activitytypes.wmwikis.net/)

Why don't they accept Non-Invasive Ventilation? : Insight into the interpersonal perspectives of patients with MND.

"Objectives. Although non-invasive ventilation (NIV) can benefit survival and quality of life, it is rejected by a substantial proportion of people with motor neurone disease (MND). The aim of this study was to understand why some MND patients decline or withdraw from NIV. Method. Nine patients withMND(male = 7, mean age = 67 years) participated in this study. These patients, from a cohort of 35 patients who were offered NIV treatment to support respiratory muscle weakness, did not participate in NIV treatment when it was clinically appropriate. Semi-structured interviews and interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) were employed to explore these patient’s experience of MND and their thoughts and understanding of NIV treatment. Results. Using IPA, four themes were identified: preservation of the self, negative perceptions of NIV, negative experience with health care services, and not needing NIV. Further analysis identified the fundamental issue to be the maintenance of perceived self, which was interpreted to consist of the sense of autonomy, dignity, and quality of life. Conclusions. The findings indicate psychological reasons for disengagement with NIV. The threat to the self, the sense of loss of control, and negative views of NIV resulting from anxiety were more important to these patients than prolonging life in its current form. These findings suggest the importance of understanding the psychological dimension involved in decision-making regarding uptake of NIV and a need for sensitive holistic evaluation if NIV is declined.
