R-mini CHP in ≥80-year-old Patients with Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma: A Multicenter, Open-label, Single-arm Phase II Trial Protocol

In very-elderly diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients, treatment intensities must be lowered due to the risks of comorbidities and organ function deterioration, and treatment outcomes are worse compared to younger patients. Very-elderly patients are often excluded from DLBCL clinical trials, and optimal treatments and dosages are not established. In this clinical trial, we examined the efficacy and safety of 6 courses of R-mini CHP therapy (cf., CHOP [cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisone]) in which vincristine is omitted to avoid the peripheral neuropathy that reduces elderly patients’ quality of life, as remission induction therapy in DLBCL patients aged≥80 years

OryzaExpress: An Integrated Database of Gene Expression Networks and Omics Annotations in Rice

Similarity of gene expression profiles provides important clues for understanding the biological functions of genes, biological processes and metabolic pathways related to genes. A gene expression network (GEN) is an ideal choice to grasp such expression profile similarities among genes simultaneously. For GEN construction, the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC) has been widely used as an index to evaluate the similarities of expression profiles for gene pairs. However, calculation of PCCs for all gene pairs requires large amounts of both time and computer resources. Based on correspondence analysis, we developed a new method for GEN construction, which takes minimal time even for large-scale expression data with general computational circumstances. Moreover, our method requires no prior parameters to remove sample redundancies in the data set. Using the new method, we constructed rice GENs from large-scale microarray data stored in a public database. We then collected and integrated various principal rice omics annotations in public and distinct databases. The integrated information contains annotations of genome, transcriptome and metabolic pathways. We thus developed the integrated database OryzaExpress for browsing GENs with an interactive and graphical viewer and principal omics annotations (http://riceball.lab.nig.ac.jp/oryzaexpress/). With integration of Arabidopsis GEN data from ATTED-II, OryzaExpress also allows us to compare GENs between rice and Arabidopsis. Thus, OryzaExpress is a comprehensive rice database that exploits powerful omics approaches from all perspectives in plant science and leads to systems biology

The objective of this study is to investigate issues related to self-esteem among nursing collegestudents, and contribute to understanding what support arrangements would be of help for students to develop and understand the responsibilities they are expected to fulfill as members of society who are in charge of nursing. The study design is a questionnaire survey using a social and basic self-esteem test (SOBA-SET), which rates 18 items on four scales. The SOBA-SET questionnaire forms were distributed to and collected directly from the nursing college students. In total, we distributed 388 forms and collected 174 responses (44.8 %). The analysis was conducted with 74 first year( 42.5 %), 24 second year( 13.8 %), 26 third year( 14.9 %), and 50 fourth year (28.7 %) students. The responses were classified into SB and Sb types, and 70.3% of the first year, about 60% of second and third years and 43.0 % of fourth year students were included in the SB type. This suggests that students can overcome difficulties by themselves even if they make mistakes and are scolded. However, a total of 8.3 % of the second year students were evaluated as the Sb type. This suggests that teachers may be overlooking distress arising from“ feelings of isolation” felt by these students by assuming that“ there is no need to worry about these students”. The findings suggest the necessity to follow up the development and growth of the selfesteem of these students and also to examine educational methods

A case of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor in a patient with neurofibromatosis-1

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Patients with neurofibromatosis-1 (NF-1) sometime develop neuroendocrine tumors (NET). Although these NETs usually occur in the duodenum or peri-ampullary region, they occasionally grow in the pancreas (PNET). A 62-year-old man with NF-1 had mild liver dysfunction and was admitted to our hospital for further examination. An abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan demonstrated a 30-mm tumor in the head of the pancreas. The scan showed an invasion of the tumor into the duodenum, and biopsy under an endoscopic ultrasonography indicated that the tumor was a NET. A subtotal stomach-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy was performed. Macroscopically, the pancreatic tumor was white and elastic hard. Microscopically, tumor cells were composed of ribbons, cords, and solid nests with an acinus-like structure. The tumor was diagnosed as NET G2 according to the WHO classification (2010). The product of the<it>NF-1</it> gene, i.e., neurofibromin, was weakly positive in the tumor cells, suggesting that the tumor was induced by a mutation in the <it>NF-1</it> gene. This is the seventh case of PNET arising in NF-1 patients worldwide.</p
