Some Miocene Fish Otoliths from the Yakuoji Formation, Tsu, Mie Prefecture
From the Miocene Yakuoji Formation in the western part of Tsu City, many deep sea fish otoliths were found. They belong to the families Myctophidae, Notacanthidae and Coryphaenoididae, and described as new to science are Diaphus angulatus, D. hataii, Lampanyctus kuboensis, Hygophum rotundum, Notacanthus circulus, and Coelorhynchus yakuojiensis, whereas the unidentified species belong to the genera Diaphus and Notoscopelus
Preconcentration Method of Antimony Using Modified Thiol Cotton Fiber for Isotopic Analyses of Antimony in Natural Samples
textabstractAutophagosomes, the hallmark of autophagy, are double-membrane vesicles sequestering cytoplasmic components. They are generated at the phagophore assembly site (PAS), the phagophore being the precursor structure of these carriers. According to the current model, autophagosomes result from the elongation and reorganization of membranes at the PAS/phagophore driven by the concerted action of the autophagy-related (Atg) proteins. Once an autophagosome is completed, the Atg proteins that were associated with the expanding phagophore are released in the cytoplasm and reused for the biogenesis of new vesicles. One molecular event required for autophagosome formation is the generation of phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate (PtdIns3P) at the PAS. Our data indicate that in addition to the synthesis of this lipid, the dephosphorylation of PtdIns3P is also crucial for autophagy progression. In the absence of Ymr1, a specific PtdIns3P phosphatase and the only yeast member of the myotubularin protein family, Atg proteins remain associated with complete autophagosomes, which are thus unable to fuse with the vacuole
Relation between the instrumental activities of daily living and physical fitness tests in elderly women.
A cross-sectional study was conducted to quantitatively evaluate the relationship between the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) and various physical fitness tests in elderly women living at home. The study focused on the total population of those women aged 65 years and over living in Y Town, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, who visited a nursing home for day services. A total of 128 subjects were divided into two groups: dependent in IADL group (n = 49) and independent in IADL group (n = 79). The magnitude of the relation was evaluated by the odds ratio (OR). The following tests showed a significant decrease in IADL: knee-raising test [age-adjusted OR = 4.23, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.81-9.87], height (age-adjusted OR = 4.09, 95% CI 1.75-9.56), grip strength (age-adjusted OR = 3.68, 95% CI 1.57-8.60), sit-and-reach test (age-adjusted OR = 2.76, 95% CI 1.20-6.34), and standing on one leg with closed eyes (age-adjusted OR = 2.56, 95% CI 1.09-5.97). Multivariate analysis using Hayashi's quantification method I indicated that knee-raising was the test most highly correlated with decreased IADL. These results suggest that measurement of knee-raising ability, muscle strength of the lower extremities and flexibility of hip joint could be the most useful factors to assess the level of instrumental self-support ability.</p
S_3 Symmetry and Neutrino Masses and Mixings
Based on a universal seesaw mass matrix model with three scalars \phi_i, and
by assuming an S_3 flavor symmetry for the Yukawa interactions, the lepton
masses and mixings are investigated systematically. In order to understand the
observed neutrino mixing, the charged leptons (e, \mu, \tau) are regarded as
the 3 elements (e_1, e_2, e_3) of S_3, while the neutrino mass-eigenstates are
regarded as the irreducible representation (\nu_\eta, \nu_\sigma, \nu_\pi) of
S_3, where (\nu_\pi, \nu_\eta) and \nu_\sigma are a doublet and a singlet,
respectively, which are composed of the 3 elements (\nu_1, \nu_2, \nu_3) of
S_3.Comment: 16 pages, no figure, version to appear in EPJ-
