    Quantitative Kinetic Energy Estimated from Disdrometer Signal

    The kinetic energy of the rain drops was predicted in a relation between the rain rate and rain quantity, derived directly from the rain drop size distribution (DSD), which had been measured by a disdrometer located in the eastern state of Alagoas-Brazil. The equation in the form of exponential form suppressed the effects of large drops at low rainfall intensity observed at the beginning and end of the rainfall. The kinetic energy of the raindrop was underestimated in almost rain intensity ranges and was considered acceptable by the performance indicators such as coefficient of determination, average absolute error, percent relative error, mean absolute error, root mean square error, Willmott's concordance index and confidence index

    3-D finite element analysis of the effects of post location and loading location on stress distribution in root canals of the mandibular 1st molar

    Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate, by using finite element analysis, the influence of post location and occlusal loading location on the stress distribution pattern inside the root canals of the mandibular 1st molar. Material and Methods Three different 3-D models of the mandibular 1st molar were established: no post (NP) – a model of endodontic and prosthodontic treatments; mesiobuccal post (MP) – a model of endodontic and prosthodontic treatments with a post in the mesiobuccal canal; and distal post (DP) – a model of endodontic and prosthodontic treatments with a post in the distal canal. A vertical force of 300 N, perpendicular to the occlusal plane, was applied to one of five 1 mm2 areas on the occlusal surface; mesial marginal ridge, distal marginal ridge, mesiobuccal cusp, distobuccal cusp, and central fossa. Finite element analysis was used to calculate the equivalent von Mises stresses on each root canal. Results The DP model showed similar maximum stress values to the NP model, while the MP model showed markedly greater maximum stress values. The post procedure increased stress concentration inside the canals, although this was significantly affected by the site of the force. Conclusions In the mandibular 1st molar, the distal canal is the better place to insert the post than the mesiobuccal canal. However, if insertion into the mesiobuccal canal is unavoidable, there should be consideration on the occlusal contact, making central fossa and distal marginal ridge the main functioning areas

    Landscaping Trees under the Impacts of Climate Changes: Construction Professionals’ Perceptions in the Field of Landscape Architecture in South Korea

    This study examines the relationship between landscaping trees and climate changes in the Korean context through a questionnaire designed to elicit the perceptions of construction professionals in South Korea. The questionnaire results show that these professionals are well aware of the various climate change phenomena. Based on this analysis, three noteworthy implications are identified: (1) drought and heat wave as major climate change phenomena that affect tree defects in Korea, (2) building a tree planting environment reflecting climate change prediction, and (3) additions for sustainable tree planting in the Korean context. In the answers to the questions pertaining to professionals’perceptions of the impact of climate change on tree defects, most respondents felt that climate change has already had a decisive impact on trees, and that impact needs to be reflected in tree-planting standards for securing the sustainability of urban trees

    Torsional Vibration Transduction in a Solid Shaft by MPTs

    In this study, we aim to investigate the feasibility to use MPTs (Magnetostrictive Patch Transducers) for torsional vibration measurement in solid ferromagnetic cylinders. MPTs consisting of thin magnetostrictive patches, permanent magnets and a solenoid coil have been widely used for elastic wave transduction in the ultrasound frequency range [1] but they have been seldom used for sonic-frequency range vibration measurement, in spite of their unique wireless transduction characteristics. While a MPT was used in Ref. [2] to perform torsional modal testing in a hollow cylinder or a pipe having relatively small torsional rigidity, no investigation has been reported yet on the use of MPTs in “solid” “ferromagnetic” shafts, common torsional power carrying elements in machines.While we will be mainly focused here on the torsional wave measurement in stationary shafts, the MPT-based torsional measurement can be also applied to rotating shafts. Because the torsional rigidities of solid shafts are much larger than those of hollow cylinders of the same radii, it is important to find optimal MPT configurations, such as the optimal number of rectangular patches to be installed around the surface of a solid shaft. Thereby, we performed numerical investigations and accordingly designed a series of experiments for torsional vibration testing in steel shafts. The actual modal testing experiments with the designed MPTs were found to predict the torsional Eigen-frequencies and Eigen-modes that agree well with the theoretical predictions. Also the relation between the measured vibration signals from MPTs and those from strain gages was checked experimentally and in fact, the experimental result favorably agreed with the theoretical prediction. Potential applications of the MPT-based torsional vibration measurement technique in rotating solid shafts for structural health monitoring are also briefly discussed

    A truly hyperbolic elastic metamaterial lens

    Sub-wavelength imaging is possible if metamaterial lenses realizing hyperbolic or elliptic Equi-Frequency Contours (EFCs) are used. Theoretically, lenses exhibiting hyperbolic EFCs allow imaging with unlimited resolution, but only metamaterials of elliptic EFCs producing limited resolution have been so far realized in elastic field. Thus, an elastic metamaterial lens realizing truly hyperbolic EFCs can lead to superior-resolution ultrasonic imaging.     Dimeric configuration of SeqA protein bound to a pair of hemi-methylated GATC sequences

    The binding of SeqA protein to hemi-methylated GATC sequences (hemi-sites) regulates chromosome initiation and the segregation of replicated chromosome in Escherichia coli. We have used atomic force microscopy to examine the architecture of SeqA and the mode of binding of one molecule of SeqA to a pair of hemi-sites in aqueous solution. SeqA has a bipartite structure composed of a large and a small lobe. Upon binding of a SeqA molecule to a pair of hemi-sites, the larger lobe becomes visibly separated into two DNA binding domains, each of which binds to one hemi-site. The two DNA binding domains are held together by association between the two multimerization domains that make up the smaller lobe. The binding of each DNA binding domain to a hemi-site leads to bending of the bound DNA inwards toward the bound protein. In this way, SeqA adopts a dimeric configuration when bound to a pair of hemi-sites. Mutational analysis of the multimerization domain indicates that, in addition to multimerization of SeqA polypeptides, this domain contributes to the ability of SeqA to bind to a pair of hemi-sites and to its cooperative behavior
