Port Capacity Evaluation Formula for General Cargo
AbstractThe objective of this research is to study the evaluation method of berth capacity for general cargo in port. Specially, this study discussed the evaluation formula for general cargo berth capacity. It described the traditional evaluation method and new evaluation method with a sample case using real data of the general cargo berth. The results of the study revealed some problems for traditional evaluation method of general cargo handling capacity. Traditional calculation method does not reflect real situation for the general cargo berth capacity. Also, it does not reflect individual circumstances in terms of input parameter like berth occupancy rate, an annual working day and daily working hour. Finally, this study recommended the applicable and effective formula to reflect real situation on ports which can give direction for developing evaluation of formula for general cargo port capacity
Development of carbon-based adsorbent for separation of impurities such as siloxane and ammonia from land-fill gas
Land-fill gas or bio-gas is composed of large portion of methane and carbon dioxide, and small amount of impurities such as nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, siloxane and ammonia. These gases can be used as a gas-fuel after upgrading treatment. For the application of the land-fill gas and bio-gas as a fuel, we developed highly-performing carbon-based adsorbent which can separate siloxane and ammonia residue from these gases. It was quite necessary to consider the chemical properties of siloxane and ammonia for development of suitable adsorbent of each component. The siloxane can be polymerized in acidic or basic condition to form bulkier species which causes adsorbent deactivation and difficult regeneration. The ammonia gas is well known as basic molecules which have strong affinity to acidic species. In these reasons, we prepared neutral carbon materials by various methods for siloxane adsorption. In addition, we developed carbon-based basic ammonia-adsorbent by simple methods such as the chemical treatment of commercial activated carbon or the impregnation of organic molecules into the activated carbon. And then, adsorption-desorption isotherms and breakthrough curve of siloxane and ammonia were measured for thus synthesized adsorbents. Detail results for synthesis and the adsorption measurement of the studied adsorbents will be presented in the conference
Leukostasis by hyperleukocytic childhood acute leukemia: pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and emergency care
Hyperleukocytosis (HL), defined by a peripheral white blood cell (WBC) count exceeding 100,000/mm3, is occasionally observed in childhood acute leukemia. The increased viscosity in the micro-circulation by HL and the interaction between the leukemic blasts and endometrium of blood vessels sometimes result in leukostasis. Leukostasis can incur life-threatening manifestations, such as respiratory distress, brain infarction and hemorrhage, and renal failure, needing an emergency care. Although early stage of leukostasis is difficult to detect due to nonspecific manifestations, an emergency care is mandatory because leukostasis can proceed to a fatal course. Initial management includes an aggressive fluid therapy that can reduce WBC count, and prevent other metabolic complications implicated by HL. Packed red blood cells should be judiciously transfused because it increases blood viscosity. Conversely, transfusion of platelet concentrates or fresh frozen plasma, which does not affect blood viscosity, is recommended for prevention of hemorrhage. To reduce tumor burden, leukapheresis or exchange transfusion is commonly performed. However, the efficacy is still controversial, and technical problems are present. Leukapheresis or exchange transfusion is recommended if WBC count is 200,000-300,000/mm3 or more, especially in acute myelocytic leukemia, or manifestations of leukostasis are present. In addition, early chemotherapy is the definite treatment of leukostasis
GScluster: Network-weighted gene-set clustering analysis
Background: Gene-set analysis (GSA) has been commonly used to identify significantly altered pathways or functions from omics data. However, GSA often yields a long list of gene-sets, necessitating efficient post-processing for improved interpretation. Existing methods cluster the gene-sets based on the extent of their overlap to summarize the GSA results without considering interactions between gene-sets. Results: Here, we presented a novel network-weighted gene-set clustering that incorporates both the gene-set overlap and protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks. Three examples were demonstrated for microarray gene expression, GWAS summary, and RNA-sequencing data to which different GSA methods were applied. These examples as well as a global analysis show that the proposed method increases PPI densities and functional relevance of the resulting clusters. Additionally, distinct properties of gene-set distance measures were compared. The methods are implemented as an R/Shiny package GScluster that provides gene-set clustering and diverse functions for visualization of gene-sets and PPI networks. Conclusions: Network-weighted gene-set clustering provides functionally more relevant gene-set clusters and related network analysis
Lower extremity edema in patients with early ovarian cancer
BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to investigate clinical manifestations of lower extremity edema (LEE) in early ovarian cancer. METHODS: Patients with early ovarian cancer who underwent staging surgery between January 2001 and December 2010. Medical records for LEE and/or responses to the Gynecologic Cancer Lymphedema Questionnaire (GCLQ) were evaluated. RESULTS: Patients had a median age of 46 years. Twenty-nine patients (40.8%) had past (13 patients, 44.8%) and/or current patient-reported LEE (16 patients, 55.2%). Symptoms reported on the GCLQ in over 20% of respondents were numbness, firmness/tightness, swelling, heaviness, limited movement of knee, and aching. GCLQ total symptoms score was significantly higher in patients with current LEE. Most of the LEE (25/29, 86.2%) developed within 12 months after surgery and LEE lasted more than 6 months in approximately two-thirds of the patients (18/29, 62.1%). Only half of the patients (52.1%) indicated knowledge of lymphedema: 86.2% of LEE patients and 28.6% of patients with no LEE. CONCLUSIONS: Although a significant proportion of patients with ovarian cancer have LEE after surgery, most are not aware of lymphedema until they develop. Education and analyses for LEE and lymphedema are needed in patients with ovarian cancer
Biclustering analysis of transcriptome big data identifies condition-specific microRNA targets
We present a novel approach to identify human microRNA (miRNA) regulatory modules (mRNA targets and relevant cell conditions) by biclustering a large collection of mRNA fold-change data for sequence-specific targets. Bicluster targets were assessed using validated messenger RNA (mRNA) targets and exhibited on an average 17.0% (median 19.4%) improved gain in certainty (sensitivity + specificity). The net gain was further increased up to 32.0% (median 33.4%) by incorporating functional networks of targets. We analyzed cancer-specific biclusters and found that the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway is strongly enriched with targets of a few miRNAs in breast cancer and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Indeed, five independent prognostic miRNAs were identified, and repression of bicluster targets and pathway activity by miR-29 was experimentally validated. In total, 29 898 biclusters for 459 human miRNAs were collected in the BiMIR database where biclusters are searchable for miRNAs, tissues, diseases, keywords and target genes
Curative Effects of Thiacremonone against Acetaminophen-Induced Acute Hepatic Failure via Inhibition of Proinflammatory Cytokines Production and Infiltration of Cytotoxic Immune Cells and Kupffer Cells
High doses of acetaminophen (APAP; N-acetyl-p-aminophenol) cause severe hepatotoxicity after metabolic activation by cytochrome P450 2E1. This study was undertaken to examine the preventive effects of thiacremonone, a compound extracted from garlic, on APAP-induced acute hepatic failure in male C57BL/6J. Mice received with 500 mg/kg APAP after a 7-day pretreatment with thiacremonone (10–50 mg/kg). Thiacremonone inhibited the APAP-induced serum ALT and AST levels in a dose-dependent manner, and markedly reduced the restricted area of necrosis and inflammation by administration of APAP. Thiacremonone also inhibited the APAP-induced depletion of intracellular GSH, induction of nitric oxide, and lipid peroxidation as well as expression of P450 2E1. After APAP injection, the numbers of Kupffer cells, natural killer cells, and cytotoxic T cells were elevated, but the elevated cell numbers in the liver were reduced in thiacremonone pretreated mice. The expression levels of I-309, M-CSF, MIG, MIP-1α, MIP-1β, IL-7, and IL-17 were increased by APAP treatment, which were inhibited in thiacremonone pretreated mice. These data indicate that thiacremonone could be a useful agent for the treatment of drug-induced hepatic failure and that the reduction of cytotoxic immune cells as well as proinflammatory cytokine production may be critical for the prevention of APAP-induced acute liver toxicity

Fluorescent humanized anti-CEA antibody specifically labels metastatic pancreatic cancer in a patient-derived orthotopic xenograft (PDOX) mouse model.
Pancreatic cancer is a highly lethal disease in part due to incomplete tumor resection. Targeting by tumor-specific antibodies conjugated with a fluorescent label can result in selective labeling of cancer in vivo for surgical navigation. In the present study, we describe a patient-derived orthotopic xenograft model of pancreatic cancer that recapitulated the disease on a gross and microscopic level, along with physiologic clinical manifestations. We additionally show that the use of an anti-CEA antibody conjugated to the near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent dye, IRDye800CW, can selectively highlight the pancreatic cancer and its metastases in this model with a tumor-to-background ratio of 3.5 (SEM 0.9). The present results demonstrate the clinical potential of this labeling technique for fluorescence-guided surgery of pancreatic cancer
