    The milliQan Experiment: Search for milli-charged Particles at the LHC

    Recently, a search for milli-charged particles produced at the LHC has been proposed. The experiment, named milliQan, is expected to obtain sensitivity to charges of 101103e10^{- 1} - 10^{-3}e for masses in the 0.1 - 100 GeV range. The detector is composed of 3 stacks of 80 cm long plastic scintillator arrays read out by PMTs. It will be installed in an existing tunnel 33 m from the CMS interaction point at the LHC, with 17 m of rock shielding to suppress beam backgrounds. In the fall of 2017 a 1% scale "demonstrator" of the proposed detector was installed at the planned site in order to study the feasibility of the experiment, focusing on understanding various background sources such as radioactivity of materials, PMT dark current, cosmic rays, and beam induced backgrounds.     Letter of Intent: Search for sub-millicharged particles at J-PARC

    We propose a new experiment sensitive to the detection of millicharged particles produced at the 3030 GeV proton fixed-target collisions at J-PARC. The potential site for the experiment is B2 of the Neutrino Monitor building, 280280 m away from the target. With NPOT=1022\textrm{N}_\textrm{POT}=10^{22}, the experiment can provide sensitivity to particles with electric charge 3×104e3\times10^{-4}\,e for mass less than 0.20.2 GeV/c2\textrm{GeV}/\textrm{c}^2 and 1.5×103e1.5\times10^{-3}\,e for mass less than 1.61.6 GeV/c2\textrm{GeV}/\textrm{c}^2. This brings a substantial extension to the current constraints on the charge and the mass of such particles

    Clinical outcomes of balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration for the treatment of gastric variceal hemorrhage in Korean patients with liver cirrhosis: a retrospective multicenter study

    Background/AimsThis study evaluated the clinical outcomes of balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BRTO) for the treatment of hemorrhage from gastric varices (GV) in Korean patients with liver cirrhosis (LC).MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed data from 183 LC patients who underwent BRTO for GV bleeding in 6 university-based hospitals between January 2001 and December 2010.ResultsOf the 183 enrolled patients, 49 patients had Child-Pugh (CP) class A LC, 105 had CP class B, and 30 had CP class C at the time of BRTO. BRTO was successfully performed in 177 patients (96.7%). Procedure-related complications (e.g., pulmonary thromboembolism and renal infarction) occurred in eight patients (4.4%). Among 151 patients who underwent follow-up examinations of GV, 79 patients (52.3%) achieved eradication of GV, and 110 patients (72.8%) exhibited marked shrinkage of the treated GV to grade 0 or I. Meanwhile, new-appearance or aggravation of esophageal varices (EV) occurred in 54 out of 136 patients who underwent follow-up endoscopy (41.2%). During the 36.0±29.2 months (mean±SD) of follow-up, 39 patients rebled (hemorrhage from GV in 7, EV in 18, nonvariceal origin in 4, and unknown in 10 patients). The estimated 3-year rebleeding-free rate was 74.8%, and multivariate analysis showed that CP class C was associated with rebleeding (odds ratio, 2.404; 95% confidence-interval, 1.013-5.704; P=0.047).ConclusionsBRTO can be performed safely and effectively for the treatment of GV bleeding. However, aggravation of EV or bleeding from EV is not uncommon after BRTO; thus, periodic endoscopy to follow-up of EV with or without prophylactic treatment might be necessary in LC patients undergoing BRTO

    Quality of life in patients with diabetic nephropathy: findings from the KNOW-CKD (Korean Cohort Study for Outcomes in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease) cohort

    Background Diabetic nephropathy (DN) can affect quality of life (QoL) because it requires arduous lifelong management. This study analyzed QoL differences between DN patients and patients with other chronic kidney diseases (CKDs). Methods The analysis included subjects (n = 1,766) from the KNOW-CKD (Korean Cohort Study for Outcomes in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease) cohort who completed the Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form questionnaire. After implementing propensity score matching (PSM) using factors that affect the QoL of DN patients, QoL differences between DN and non-DN participants were examined. Results Among all DN patients (n = 390), higher QoL scores were found for taller subjects, and lower scores were found for those who were unemployed or unmarried, received Medical Aid, had lower economic status, had higher platelet counts or alkaline phosphatase levels, or used clopidogrel or insulin. After PSM, the 239 matched DN subjects reported significantly lower patient satisfaction (59.9 vs. 64.5, p = 0.02) and general health (35.3 vs. 39.1, p = 0.04) than the 239 non-DN subjects. Scores decreased in both groups during the 5-year follow-up, and the scores in the work status, sexual function, and role-physical domains were lower among DN patients than non-DN patients, though those differences were not statistically significant. Conclusion Socioeconomic factors of DN were strong risk factors for impaired QoL, as were high platelet, alkaline phosphatase, and clopidogrel and insulin use. Clinicians should keep in mind that the QoL of DN patients might decrease in some domains compared with non-DN CKDs

    In this thesis, we report the result on the search for the Standard Model(SM) Higgs boson decaying to a pair of W in the full leptonic final state using data collected by CMS detector at LHC at 7 and 8 TeV. The integrated luminosity is 4.9 /fb⁻¹ and 19.5 /fb⁻¹ at 7 and 8 TeV, respectively. The SM Higgs hypothesis is excluded at CLs=95 % in mH = 128 - 600 GeV. An excess of data is ob- served around mH = 125 GeV which corresponds to significance of 4.0[sigma] on the background-only hypothesis. The measured production rate normalized to the SM prediction is 0.76 ± 0.13(stat.) ± 0.16(syst.). A hypothesis test on the spin- parity nature of the new boson shows that data prefers SM Higgs boson to the graviton- like spin-2 model or spin-0 pseudo-scalar mode

    Anomalous triple gauge couplings in electroweak dilepton tails at the LHC and interference resurrection

    Abstract We study the electroweak dilepton production with two forward jets at the LHC, aiming to measure the anomalous triple gauge couplings in the Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach. This process exhibits a distinctive feature, namely, the interference between Standard Model (SM) and beyond the SM is resurrected in the inclusive cross section of the full amplitude, including two forward jets. As a concrete illustration, we perform the detailed analytic and numerical study of the interference using a simpler toy process, and discuss the subtlety of the effective W approximation. We propose a new kinematic variable, VBFhardness, that controls the amount of energy flowing into the dilepton subprocess. We show that an appropriate cut on VBFhardness makes the interference resurrection manifest. Finally, we use the invariant mass of the dilepton system as well as the transverse momentum, as done in the literature, to derive the sensitivity to anomalous triple gauge couplings at the LHC and the high luminosity LHC. Our result is compared with the existing limits from the experiments

    Nanoindentation Analysis for Local Properties of Ultrafine Grained Copper Processed by High Pressure Torsion

    Severe plastic deformation (SPD) techniques have recently been developed for producing bulk ultrafine grained metallic materials. High pressure torsion (HPT) produces finer microstructures than those achieved by other SPD processes because of the higher imposed strain and hydrostatic pressure. It is known that HPT-processed metals show a highly heterogeneous microstructure not only along the radius due to the nature of torsional deformation but also through the thickness. Since the sample size for HPT is small, the local properties of HPT-processed specimens have not been investigated yet. In this paper, we propose a method to obtain stress-strain curves from nanoindenting curves by combining the finite element method and the recursion method. The nanoindentation technique was employed to elucidate the local mechanical properties, especially the stress-strain behavior. The method to extract the stress-strain curves from the load-displacement curves obtained by nanoindentation tests was applied to the edge region of the HPT-processed sample.
