Conditional Teacher-Student Learning
The teacher-student (T/S) learning has been shown to be effective for a
variety of problems such as domain adaptation and model compression. One
shortcoming of the T/S learning is that a teacher model, not always perfect,
sporadically produces wrong guidance in form of posterior probabilities that
misleads the student model towards a suboptimal performance. To overcome this
problem, we propose a conditional T/S learning scheme, in which a "smart"
student model selectively chooses to learn from either the teacher model or the
ground truth labels conditioned on whether the teacher can correctly predict
the ground truth. Unlike a naive linear combination of the two knowledge
sources, the conditional learning is exclusively engaged with the teacher model
when the teacher model's prediction is correct, and otherwise backs off to the
ground truth. Thus, the student model is able to learn effectively from the
teacher and even potentially surpass the teacher. We examine the proposed
learning scheme on two tasks: domain adaptation on CHiME-3 dataset and speaker
adaptation on Microsoft short message dictation dataset. The proposed method
achieves 9.8% and 12.8% relative word error rate reductions, respectively, over
T/S learning for environment adaptation and speaker-independent model for

Effect of pulse magnetic field on solidification structure and properties of pure copper
The application of pulse magnetic field to metal solidification is an advanced technique which can remarkably refine solidification structure. In this paper, the effect of pulse magnetic field on solidification structure, mechanical properties and conductivity of pure copper was experimentally investigated. The results showed that the solidification structure transformed from coarse columnar crystal to fine globular crystal with increasing pulse voltage. Increasing pulse voltage also improved the tensile strength. However, with the increase of pulse voltage, the elongation and electrical resistivity firstly decreased, then increased when the pulse voltage beyond a critical value. Moreover, in some conditions, pulse magnetic field can simultaneously improve the conductivity and mechanical property of pure copper

Epigenetic Down-Regulation of Sirt 1 via DNA Methylation and Oxidative Stress Signaling Contributes to the Gestational Diabetes Mellitus-Induced Fetal Programming of Heart Ischemia-Sensitive Phenotype in Late Life.
Rationale: The incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is increasing worldwide. However, whether and how GDM exposure induces fetal programming of adult cardiac dysfunctional phenotype, especially the underlying epigenetic molecular mechanisms and theranostics remain unclear. To address this problem, we developed a late GDM rat model. Methods: Pregnant rats were made diabetic on day 12 of gestation by streptozotocin (STZ). Experiments were conducted in 6 weeks old offspring. Results: There were significant increases in ischemia-induced cardiac infarction and gender-dependent left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in male offspring in GDM group as compared to controls. Exposure to GDM enhanced ROS level and caused a global DNA methylation in offspring cardiomyocytes. GDM attenuated cardiac Sirt 1 protein and p-Akt/Akt levels, but enhanced autophagy-related proteins expression (Atg 5 and LC3 II/LC3 I) as compared to controls. Ex-vivo treatment of DNA methylation inhibitor, 5-Aza directly inhibited Dnmt3A and enhanced Sirt 1 protein expression in fetal hearts. Furthermore, treatment with antioxidant, N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) in offspring reversed GDM-mediated DNA hypermethylation, Sirt1 repression and autophagy-related gene protein overexpression in the hearts, and rescued GDM-induced deterioration in heart ischemic injury and LV dysfunction. Conclusion: Our data indicated that exposure to GDM induced offspring cardiac oxidative stress and DNA hypermethylation, resulting in an epigenetic down-regulation of Sirt1 gene and aberrant development of heart ischemia-sensitive phenotype, which suggests that Sirt 1-mediated signaling is the potential therapeutic target for the heart ischemic disease in offspring
Cooling mechanical resonators to quantum ground state from room temperature
Ground-state cooling of mesoscopic mechanical resonators is a fundamental
requirement for test of quantum theory and for implementation of quantum
information. We analyze the cavity optomechanical cooling limits in the
intermediate coupling regime, where the light-enhanced optomechanical coupling
strength is comparable with the cavity decay rate. It is found that in this
regime the cooling breaks through the limits in both the strong and weak
coupling regimes. The lowest cooling limit is derived analytically at the
optimal conditions of cavity decay rate and coupling strength. In essence,
cooling to the quantum ground state requires , with being the mechanical quality factor and
being the thermal phonon number. Remarkably, ground-state
cooling is achievable starting from room temperature, when mechanical
-frequency product , and both of the
cavity decay rate and the coupling strength exceed the thermal decoherence
rate. Our study provides a general framework for optimizing the backaction
cooling of mesoscopic mechanical resonators
Evaluation of anti-smoking television advertising on tobacco control among urban community population in Chongqing, China
Background
China is the largest producer and consumer of tobacco in the world. Considering the constantly growing urban proportion, persuasive tobacco control measures are important in urban communities. Television, as one of the most pervasive mass media, can be used for this purpose.
Methods
The anti-smoking advertisement was carried out in five different time slots per day from 15 May to 15 June in 2011 across 12 channels of Chongqing TV. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the main municipal areas of Chongqing. A questionnaire was administered in late June to 1,342 native residents aged 18–45, who were selected via street intercept survey.
Results
Respondents who recognized the advertisement (32.77 %) were more likely to know or believe that smoking cigarettes caused impotence than those who did not recognize the advertisement (26.11 %). According to 25.5 % of smokers, the anti-smoking TV advertising made them consider quitting smoking. However, females (51.7 %) were less likely to be affected by the advertisement to stop and think about quitting smoking compared to males (65.6 %) (OR = 0.517, 95 % CI [0.281–0.950]). In addition, respondents aged 26–35 years (67.4 %) were more likely to try to persuade others to quit smoking than those aged 18–25 years (36.3 %) (OR = 0.457, 95 % CI [0.215–0.974]). Furthermore, non-smokers (87.4 %) were more likely to find the advertisement relevant than smokers (74.8 %) (OR = 2.34, 95 % CI [1.19–4.61]).
Conclusions
This study showed that this advertisement did not show significant differences on smoking-related knowledge and attitude between non-smokers who had seen the ad and those who had not. Thus, this form may not be the right tool to facilitate change in non-smokers. The ad should instead be focused on the smoking population. Gender, smoking status, and age influenced the effect of anti-smoking TV advertising on the general population in China
