Dynamics of Order Parameter in Photoexcited Peierls Chain
The photoexcited dynamics of order parameter in Peierls chain is investigated
by using a microscopic quantum theory in the limit where the hot electrons may
establish themselves into a quasi-equilibrium state described by an effective
temperature. The optical phonon mode responsible for the Peierls instability is
coupled to the electron subsystem, and its dynamic equation is derived in terms
of the density matrix technique. Recovery dynamics of the order parameter is
obtained, which reveals a number of interesting features including the change
of oscillation frequency and amplitude at phase transition temperature and the
photo-induced switching of order parameter.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Frequency effect on streaming phenomenon induced by Rayleigh surface acoustic wave in microdroplets
Acoustic streaming of ink particles inside a water microdroplet generated by a surface acoustic wave(SAW) has been studied numerically using a finite volume numerical method and these results have been verified using experimental measurements. Effects of SAW excitation frequency, droplet volume, and radio-frequency (RF) power are investigated, and it has been shown that SAW excitation frequency influences the SAWattenuation length, lSAW , and hence the acoustic energy absorbed by liquid. It has also been observed that an increase of excitation frequency generally enhances the SAW streaming behavior. However, when the frequency exceeds a critical value that depends on the RF power applied to the SAW device, weaker acoustic streaming is observed resulting in less effective acoustic mixing inside the droplet. This critical value is characterised by a dimensionless ratio of droplet radius to SAWattenuation length, i.e., Rd/lSAW . With a mean value of Rd/lSAW  ≈ 1, a fast and efficient mixing can be induced, even at the lowest RF power of 0.05 mW studied in this paper. On the other hand, for the Rd/lSAW ratios much larger than ∼1, significant decreases in streaming velocities were observed, resulting in a transition from regular (strong) to irregular (weak) mixing/flow. This is attributed to an increased absorption rate of acoustic wave energy that leaks into the liquid, resulting in a reduction of the acoustic energy radiated away from the SAW interaction region towards the droplet free surface. It has been demonstrated in this study that a fast and efficient mixing process with a smaller RF power could be achieved if the ratio of Rd/lSAW  ≤ 1 in the SAW-droplet based microfluidics
Anderson Impurity in Helical Metal
We use a trial wave function to study the spin-1/2 Kondo effect of a helical
metal on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. While the
impurity spin is quenched by conduction electrons, the spin-spin correlation of
the conduction electron and impurity is strongly anisotropic in both spin and
spatial spaces. As a result of strong spin-orbit coupling, the out-of-plane
component of the impurity spin is found to be fully screened by the orbital
angular momentum of the conduction electrons.Comment: The published versio
Magnetization Dynamics driven by Non-equilibrium Spin-Orbit Coupled Electron Gas
The dynamics of magnetization coupled to an electron gas via s-d exchange
interaction is investigated by using density matrix technique. Our theory shows
that non-equilibrium spin accumulation induces a spin torque and the electron
bath leads to a damping of the magnetization. For the two-dimensional
magnetization thin film coupled to the electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit
coupling, the result for the spin-orbit torques is consistent with the previous
semi-classical theory. Our theory predicts a damping of the magnetization,
which is absent in the semi-classical theory. The magnitude of the damping due
to the electron bath is comparable to the intrinsic Gilbert damping and may be
important in describing the magnetization dynamics of the system.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure
Surface polaritons in two-dimensional left-handed photonic crystals
Using an extended plane-wave-based transfer-matrix method, the photonic band
structures and the corresponding transmission spectrum of a two-dimensional
left-handed photonic crystal are calculated. Comparisons between the periodic
structure with a single left-handed cylindric rod are made, and many
interesting similarities are found. It is shown that, due to the localized
surface polaritons presented by an isolated left-handed rod, there exist many
exciting physical phenomena in high-dimensional left-handed photonic crystals.
As direct results of coupling of the localized surface polaritons of
neighboring left-handed rod, a lot of almost dispersionless bands,
anti-crossing behavior, and a zero gap are exhibited in the
left-handed periodic structure. Moreover, in a certain frequency region, except
distorted by a lot of anti-crossing behavior, there exists a continual
dispersion relation, which can be explained by the long-wavelength
approximation. It is also pointed out that high-dimensional left-handed
photonic crystals can be used to design narrow-band filter.Comment: sign errors in equation
