Coulomb and nuclear breakup of a halo nucleus 11Be
Breakup reactions of the one-neutron halo nucleus 11Be on Pb and C targets at
about 70 MeV/u have been investigated by measuring the momentum vectors of the
incident 11Be, outgoing 10Be, and neutron in coincidence. The relative energy
spectra as well as the angular distributions of the 10Be+n center of mass have
been extracted for both targets. For the breakup on Pb target, the selection of
forward scattering angles is found to be effective to extract almost purely the
first-order E1 Coulomb breakup component, and to exclude the nuclear
contribution and higher-order Coulomb breakup components. This angle-selected
energy spectrum is thus used to deduce the spectroscopic factor for the
10Be(0+) 2s_1/2 configuration in 11Be which is found to be 0.72+-0.04 with
B(E1) up to Ex=4 MeV of 1.05+-0.06 e2fm2. The energy weighted E1 strength up to
Ex=4 MeV explains 70+-10% of the cluster sum rule, consistent with the obtained
spectroscopic factor. The non-energy weighted sum rule is used to extract the
root mean square distance of the halo neutron to be 5.77(16) fm, consistent
with previously known values. In the breakup with C target, we have observed
the excitations to the known unbound states in 11Be at Ex=1.78 MeV and 3.41
MeV. Angular distributions for these states show the diffraction pattern
characteristic of L=2 transitions, resulting in J^pi =(3/2,5/2)+ assignment for
these states. We finally find that even for the C target the E1 Coulomb direct
breakup mechanism becomes dominant at very forward angles.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication on Physical Review
Multimedia environmental fate and transport model of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT): case study sayong river watershed
This study describes the development of a multimedia environmental fate and transport model of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) at Sayong River Watershed. Based on the latest estimated DDT emission, the DDT concentrations in air, soil, water, and sediment as well as the transfer flux were simulated under the equilibrium and steady-state assumption. Model predictions suggest that soil and sediment was the dominant sink of DDT. The results showed that the model predicted was generally good agreement with field data. Compared with degradation reaction, advection outflow was more important in removal processes of DDT. Sensitivities of the model estimates to input parameters were tested. The result showed that vapour pressure (Ps), chemical solubility (Cs), and absolute temperature (T) of DDT were the most influential parameters for the model output. The model output–concentrations of DDT in multimedia environment is very important as it can be used in future for human exposure and risk assessment of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) at Sayong River Basin
Human autologous culture expanded bone marrow mesenchymal cell transplantation for repair of cartilage defects in osteoarthritic knees
AbstractObjective There is no widely accepted method to repair articular cartilage defects. Bone marrow mesenchymal cells have the potential to differentiate into bone, cartilage, fat and muscle. Bone marrow mesenchymal cell transplantation is easy to use clinically because cells can be easily obtained and can be multiplied without losing their capacity of differentiation. The objective of this study was to apply these cell transplantations to repair human articular cartilage defects in osteoarthritic knee joints.Design Twenty-four knees of 24 patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA) who underwent a high tibial osteotomy comprised the study group. Adherent cells in bone marrow aspirates were culture expanded, embedded in collagen gel, transplanted into the articular cartilage defect in the medial femoral condyle and covered with autologous periosteum at the time of 12 high tibial osteotomies. The other 12 subjects served as cell-free controls.Results In the cell-transplanted group, as early as 6.3 weeks after transplantation the defects were covered with white to pink soft tissue, in which metachromasia was partially observed. Forty-two weeks after transplantation, the defects were covered with white soft tissue, in which metachromasia was observed in almost all areas of the sampled tissue and hyaline cartilage-like tissue was partially observed. Although the clinical improvement was not significantly different, the arthroscopic and histological grading score was better in the cell-transplanted group than in the cell-free control group.Conclusions This procedure highlights the availability of autologous culture expanded bone marrow mesenchymal cell transplantation for the repair of articular cartilage defects in humans
Projectile fragmentation reactions and production of nuclei near the neutron drip-line
The reaction mechanism of projectile fragmentation at intermediate energies
has been investigated observing the target dependence of the production cross
sections of very neutron-rich nuclei. Measurement of longitudinal momentum
distributions of projectile-like fragments within a wide range of fragment mass
and its charge was performed using a hundred-MeV/n Ar beam incident on
Be and Ta targets. By measurement of fragment momentum distribution, a
parabolic mass dependence of momentum peak shift was observed in the results of
both targets, and a phenomenon of light-fragment acceleration was found only in
the Be-target data. The analysis of production cross sections revealed an
obvious enhancement of the target dependence except target size effect when the
neutron excess is increased. This result implies the breakdown of factorization
(BOF) of production cross sections for very neutron-rich nuclei near the drip

SU(2)-invariant reduction of the 3+1 dimensional Ashtekar's gravity
We consider a space-time with spatial sections isomorphic to the group
manifold of SU(2). Triad and connection fluctuations are assumed to be
SU(2)-invariant. Thus, they form a finite dimensional phase space. We perform
non-perturbative path integral quantization of the model. Contarary to previous
claims the path integral measure appeared to be non-singular near
configurations admitting additional Killing vectors. In this model we are able
to calculate the generating functional of Green functions of the reduced phase
space variables exactly.Comment: 12 page
