Expanding exploitation of Indian mackerel in Maharashtra
During the last decade Maharashtra has emerged as a major exploiter of Indian mackerel. From a total of 884 tonnes in 1985 the mackerel catch in Maharashtra shot up to 38355 tonnes by 1996 with an annual average (1985-2000) of 20364 tonnes, indicating an increase of 43.4 fold, whereas, during the same period its increase in Kerala was only 7 fold
Pelagic Fish
Pelagic fish such as oil sardine, Indian mackerel and
white baits are very popular among the people of Kerala,
especially those living in the coastal belt, since time
immemorial. These fish offen saved them from malnutrition
and starvation. Even today these are the favourite food fish of the poor and middle class people. In Maharashtra and Gujarat the popular pelagic fish is the Bombay duck. Pelagic fish include different varieties of sardines, carangids, seerfish and tunas of different sizes and taste that we love to include in our daily meal

Impact of ring net on the mackerel fishery at Calicut
With the introduction of ring net, there was considerable improvement in the mackerel fishery. The mackerel landing was almost fully contributed by ring net. During post-ring net period,16684 manpower brought 970 tonnes of mackerel with a catch per manpower of 58.14 kg. Due to the small mesh size of ring net and their better efficiency, the gear can cause over fishing and hence the fishery has to be watched closely in the coming years
Changing patterns in the mackerel fishery of the Malabar area
Radical changes have occurred in the
methods of the traditional mackerel fishery of
Malabar during the last four decades. From the
inefficient methods as observed by Nicholson
(Bull Madras Fish. Bureau, 1 : 9-50, 1915) the
fishery metamorphosed into dexterity by the end
of 1980s with huge, small-meshed nets being operated
from large and faster boats

Marine fish calendar. 3. Calicut
The article provides the fish landing details at Calicut during 1981 to 1986. Majority of the landing were contributed by the indigenous gears like boat seines, drift net, hooks and line and gill net. Major group of fish landed includes clupeids, anchovies, seer fishes, mackerel and tunas, soles, cat fishes, pomfrets and elasmobranchs
The Indian mackerel
The Indian mackerel forms the major pelagic resources along
the Indian coast Its trend of production fiuctuates in space and time.
Several scientists have conducted considerable research works on its
biology, fishery and population structure from various parts of its distributional
range at different periods of time. Its fishing pattern witnessed
large changes in response to mechanisation, motorisation,
innovative gear and synthetic nets, together with extension of fishing
to deeper grounds. The paper reviews the status of mackerel fisheries
research that were carried out in CMFRI since 1950 through regular
monitoring programme for its sustainable harves
The growth pattern of Indian mackerel
The modal values for 197Q-74- indicate that the mackerel grows to about
21 cm toy the end of 8 months and 'by the completion of first year the length is
about 22 cm. The growth equations derived from 12 months and 24 months data
were not fund to explain growth pattern satisfactorily. An examination of the
.specific growth-rate have shown that the rate of growth decreases consid'erably
after cbout 8 months. The indication is that as the gonadial growth sets in there
is a drastic reduction in linear growth. H-enoe, separate growth equations were
derived for the premature and mature phases. These equations fit well with the
observed values of growth during the corresponding phases
