    Streamlines for Motion Planning in Underwater Currents

    Motion planning for underwater vehicles must consider the effect of ocean currents. We present an efficient method to compute reachability and cost between sample points in sampling-based motion planning that supports long-range planning over hundreds of kilometres in complicated flows. The idea is to search a reduced space of control inputs that consists of stream functions whose level sets, or streamlines, optimally connect two given points. Such stream functions are generated by superimposing a control input onto the underlying current flow. A streamline represents the resulting path that a vehicle would follow as it is carried along by the current given that control input. We provide rigorous analysis that shows how our method avoids exhaustive search of the control space, and demonstrate simulated examples in complicated flows including a traversal along the east coast of Australia, using actual current predictions, between Sydney and Brisbane.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted to IEEE ICRA 2019.     Trivariate mover-stayer counting process models for investigating joint damage in psoriatic arthritis.

    In psoriatic arthritis, many patients do not develop permanent joint damage even after a prolonged follow-up. This has led several authors to consider the possibility of a subpopulation of stayers (those who do not have the propensity to experience the event of interest), as opposed to assuming the entire population consist of movers (those who have the propensity to experience the event of interest). In addition, it is recognised that the damaged joints process may act very differently across different joint areas, particularly the hands, feet and large joints. From a clinical perspective, interest lies in identifying possible relationships between the damaged joints processes in these joint areas for the movers and estimating the proportion of stayers in these joint areas, if they exist. For this purpose, this paper proposes a novel trivariate mover-stayer model consisting of mover-stayer truncated negative binomial margins, and patient-level dynamic covariates and random effects in the models for the movers and stayers, respectively. The model is then extended to have a two-level mover-stayer structure for its margins so that the nature of the stayer property can be investigated. A particularly attractive feature of the proposed models is that only an optimisation routine is required in their model fitting procedures. © 2016 The Authors.     Validation and application of health utilities index in Chinese subjects with down syndrome

    Objectives: The objectives of the study were (1) to validate the Chinese version of Health Utilities Index (HUI-Ch); (2) to examine the Health-related Quality of Life (HRQoL) of Chinese subjects with Down syndrome (DS); and (3) to study the impact of chronic health conditions on HRQoL of Chinese with DS. Methods: The multiple choice questionnaire for scoring Health Utilities Index Mark 2 (HUI2) and Health Utilities Index Mark 3 (HUI3) was translated and validated. In addition to the HRQoL scores from HUI2 and HUI3, proxy-data on socio-demographics, and 10 common chronic health conditions for people with DS were collected and analyzed. Data analysis involves multiple imputation and multiple regression analysis to predict variations in HRQoL in relation to different factors. Lastly, a gradient interval was constructed on the number of chronic health conditions in relation to HRQoL. Results: HUI-Ch was validated according to standard guidelines. People with DS were found to have a lower HRQoL as compared to the general population, with the majority categorized as moderate or severe on the scale. Behavioral and hearing problems on HUI2, and hearing problems on HUI3 were found to be statistically significant predictors of a lower HRQoL score. A significant gradient relationship existed showing when the number of health problems increased, the HRQoL scores decreased. Conclusions: HUI-Ch is a valid instrument to assess HRQoL. It can have broad application in Chinese subjects with DS including the study of the impact of different chronic health conditions on their quality of life. The quantifiable nature of HUI-Ch will facilitate longitudinal study on the well-being of subjects with DS and evaluation of effectiveness of intervention programs in the near future

    iCartiGD: the Integrated Cartilage Gene Database

    BACKGROUND: Diseases of cartilage, such as arthritis and degenerative disc disease, affect the majority of the general population, particularly with ageing. Discovery and understanding of the genes and pathways involved in cartilage biology will greatly assist research on the development, degeneration and disorders of cartilage. DESCRIPTION: We have established the Integrated Cartilage Gene Database (iCartiGD) of genes that are known, based on results from high throughput experiments, to be expressed in cartilage. Information about these genes is extracted automatically from public databases and presented as a single page report via a web-browser. A variety of flexible search options are provided and the chromosomal distribution of cartilage associated genes can be presented. CONCLUSION: iCartiGD provides a comprehensive source of information on genes known to be expressed in cartilage. It will remain current due to its automatic update capability and provide researchers with an easily accessible resource for studies involving cartilage. Genetic studies of the development and disorders of cartilage will benefit from this database

    Development and validation of a multivariable risk prediction model for serious infection in patients with psoriasis receiving systemic therapy

    BACKGROUND: Patients with psoriasis are often concerned about the risk of serious infection associated with systemic psoriasis treatments. OBJECTIVES: To develop and externally validate a prediction model for serious infection in patients with psoriasis within 1 year of starting systemic therapies. METHODS: The risk prediction model was developed using the British Association of Dermatologists Biologic Interventions Register (BADBIR), and the German Psoriasis Registry PsoBest was used as the validation dataset. Model discrimination and calibration were assessed internally and externally using the C-statistic, the calibration slope and the calibration in the large. RESULTS: Overall 175 (1·7%) out of 10 033 participants from BADBIR and 41 (1·7%) out of 2423 participants from PsoBest developed a serious infection within 1 year of therapy initiation. Selected predictors in a multiple logistic regression model included nine baseline covariates, and starting infliximab was the strongest predictor. Evaluation of model performance showed a bootstrap optimism-corrected C-statistic of 0·64 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0·60-0·69], calibration in the large of 0·02 (95% CI -0·14 to 0·17) and a calibration slope of 0·88 (95% CI 0·70-1·07), while external validation performance was poor, with C-statistic 0·52 (95% CI 0·42-0·62), calibration in the large 0·06 (95% CI -0·25 to 0·37) and calibration slope 0·36 (95% CI -0·24 to 0·97). CONCLUSIONS: We present the first results of the development of a multivariable prediction model. This model may help patients and dermatologists in the U.K. and the Republic of Ireland to identify modifiable risk factors and inform therapy choice in a shared decision-making process

    Survey of oral hygiene behaviour, knowledge and oral hygiene status among Hong Kong adults : a pilot study

    Objectives: To study the correlation between oral health behaviour and knowledge with respect to the oral hygiene status of Hong Kong Chinese adults. Materials and methods: Subject selection was by convenience sampling. A total of four outreach visits were arranged in March 2015. The participants’ oral health behavior and knowledge were evaluated through a self-reported questionnaire, while existing oral conditions were recorded following clinical examination using Visible Plaque Index (VPI) and Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI). Data analysis was carried out using SPSS on results obtained from the questionnaire as well as clinical examination. Results: A total of 147 subjects participated in this research project, of which 72% (103/147) were female while 28% (44/147) were male. Male subjects had statistically significantly higher mean VPI scores compared to female subjects interproximally, buccally and lingually (t-test, p<0.05). Furthermore, there exists a statistically significant negative correlation between oral health knowledge score (mean = 9.3, SD = 3.1) and VPI score (Pearson correlation test, p=0.025). Subjects who agreed accumulation of plaque or bacteria as a contributing factor to caries and periodontal diseases are statistically significantly lower than subjects who disagreed this statement in terms of mean VPI scores (53% vs 63%, t-test, p<0.05). Conclusion: Participants with better oral health knowledge who also recognized accumulation of plaque or bacteria as one of the contributing factors to dental caries and periodontal disease had better oral hygiene levels in terms of VPI.published_or_final_versio
