    Bose-Einstein condensation in the presence of a synthetic spin-momentum interaction is considered, focusing on the case where a Dirac or Rashba potential is generated via a tripod scheme.     Impacts of Ageing Population on Monetary and Exchange Rate Managements in Singapore

    This paper finds that the ageing of the population in Singapore will cause a reversal of the current net Central Provident Fund (CPF) contribution into a substantial net CPF withdrawal from 2025, with a peak occurring at 2035. The result is qualitatively robust to changes in the underlying assumptions of the projection. The paper then highlights the implications of this change on the exchange rate and monetary managements in Singapore. First, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS)’s ability to influence Singapore’s exchange rate will be greatly hampered. Second, the net CPF withdrawal will mean sustained liquidity injection into (instead of the usual liquidity drain from) the economy. To avoid unnecessary inflation, the MAS has to find a sustainable way to mob up the excess liquidity due to the sustained liquidity injection. As a simple reversal of MAS’s current foreign exchange market operation will result in substantial shrinkage of foreign reserves, the paper proposes the issuance of government bonds to achieve the dual objectives of mobbing up the excess liquidity and avoiding the shrinkage of foreign reserves. This measure will also help the bond market development in Singapore. Finally, the paper proposes two other measures that can help maintain MAS’s influence on Singapore’s exchange rate to a reasonable level in the longer future.Ageing Population, Central Provident Fund, Exchange Rate System, Monetary Policy, Singapore.

    Hong Kong as a property jurisdiction

    Purpose This study aims to explore how urban governance of Hong Kong is impacted by the formulation and implementation of the new constitutional order of “one country, two systems” that distinguishes between the British colonial government and the current government under Chinese sovereignty. Design/methodology/approach While the literature recognises the society of Hong Kong has been heavily relying on land and property activities, few attempts notice the uniqueness of Hong Kong’s sequential constitutional orders and its relations to those activities. This study presents a geographical enquiry and an archival study to illustrate the spatiality of the new constitutional order and its implications on land injustice. Drawing from the works of legal geography and urban studies, this study extends and clarifies Anne Haila’s conception of Hong Kong as “property state” to “property jurisdiction”. Findings Though common law and leasehold land system were perpetuated from the colonial period, the new constitutional order changed their practices and the underlying logic and ideology. The urban governance order of this property jurisdiction is intended for prosperity and stability of the society, and for the economic benefit and territorial integrity claim of the Chinese sovereignty. Originality/value This study enriches the literature of Hong Kong studies in three major areas, namely, the relationship with China, urban governance and land injustice. It offers a conceptual discussion, which contributes to comparative territorial autonomies studies. It also contributes to legal geography by providing insights beyond the western liberal democracy model

    Topological Excitations in Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensates

    We investigate the properties of skyrmion in the ferromagnetic state of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates by means of the mean-field theory and show that the size of skyrmion is fixed to the order of the healing length. It is shown that the interaction between two skyrmions with oppositely rotating spin textures is attractive when their separation is large, following a unique power-law behavior with a power of -7/2.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Phase diagram of asymmetric Fermi gas across Feshbach resonance

    We study the phase diagram of the dilute two-component Fermi gas at zero temperature as a function of the polarization and coupling strength. We map out the detailed phase separations between superfluid and normal states near the Feshbach resonance. We show that there are three different coexistence of superfluid and normal phases corresponding to phase separated states between: (I) the partially polarized superfluid and the fully polarized normal phases, (II) the unpolarized superfluid and the fully polarized normal phases and (III) the unpolarized superfluid and the partially polarized normal phases from strong-coupling BEC side to weak-coupling BCS side. For pairing between two species, we found this phase separation regime gets wider and moves toward the BEC side for the majority species are heavier but shifts to BCS side and becomes narrow if they are lighter.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures.
