    Internal mammary artery injury during percutaneous coronary intervention: a case report

    Abstract Background Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is widely used to treat coronary artery disease (CAD). However, complications of PCI are inevitable. Internal mammary artery (IMA) injury is an infrequent but potentially lethal complication of PCI. Case presentation A 78-year-old man was diagnosed with multivessel lesions by coronary angiography. The IMA was injured during PCI, then cured by early identification and active rescue. Conclusions This is the first reported case, to our knowledge, of injury to the IMA during PCI. We we report this case to discuss how to treat this injury effectively and avoid this complication during clinical therapy

    A New Method of GPS Water Vapor Tomography for Maximizing the Use of Signal Rays

    The spatio-temporal distribution of atmospheric water vapor information can be obtained by global positioning system (GPS) water vapor tomography. GPS signal rays pass through the tomographic area from different boundaries because the scope of the research region (latitude, longitude, and altitude) is designated in the process of tomographic modeling, the influence of the geographic distribution of receivers, and the geometric location of satellite constellations. Traditionally, only signal rays penetrating the entire tomographic area are considered in the computation of water vapor information, whereas those passing through the sides are neglected. Therefore, the accuracy of the tomographic result, especially at the bottom of the area, does not reach its full potential. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a new method that simultaneously considers the discretized tomographic voxels and the troposphere outside the research area as unknown parameters. This method can effectively improve the utilization of existing GPS observations and increase the number of voxels crossed by satellite signals, especially by increasing the proportion of voxels penetrated. A tomographic experiment is implemented using GPS data from the Hong Kong Satellite Positioning Reference Station Network. Compared to the traditional method, the proposed method increases the number of voxels crossed by signal rays and the utilization of the observed data by 15.14% and 19.68% on average, respectively. Numerical results, including comparisons of slant water vapor (SWV), precipitable water vapor (PWV), and water vapor density profile, show that the proposed method is better than traditional methods. In comparison to the water vapor density profile, the root-mean-square error (RMS), mean absolute error (MAE), standard deviation (SD), and bias of the proposed method are 1.39, 1.07, 1.30, and −0.21 gm−3, respectively. For the SWV and PWV comparison, the RMS/MAE of the proposed method are 10.46/8.17 mm and 4.00/3.39 mm, respectively

    Immune Response of Piglets Receiving Mixture of Formic and Propionic Acid Alone or with Either Capric Acid or Bacillus Licheniformis after Escherichia coli Challenge

    This study aims to evaluate whether diets containing mixture of formic and propionic acid alone or supplemented with either capric acid or Bacillus Licheniformis can alleviate immune inflammatory response of piglets challenged with enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC). A total of 30 weaning pigs were assigned to 5 diets, without additive (CON), with antibiotics (ATB), with 1% organic acid (OA; 64% formic and 25% propionic acid), with OA plus 0.2% capric acid (OA + CRA), and with OA plus 0.02% probiotic (Bacillus Licheniformis; OA + PB). After oral challenge with ETEC on day 10, the feces and plasma of all pigs were collected at different time points. Four additive treatments all decreased rectal temperature (RT) at 9 h and fecal scores (FS) at 24 h after challenge (P < 0.05), while at 9 h after challenge, inclusion of OA induced a decrease of RT compared with OA + CRA and OA + PB (P < 0.05). In plasma, concentration of interleukin (IL)-1β was reduced with the addition of ATB and OA at 24 h and 48 h after challenge and it is lower in OA group than OA + CRA group at 24 h after challenge (P < 0.05). Diets with ATB, OA, and OA + PB caused a decrease of the concentrations of IL-6 in plasma at 9 h after challenge (P < 0.05). The four additives treated piglets showed decreased concentrations of plasma tumor necrosis factor-α and interferon-γ at 9 h and 24 h after challenge, respectively (P < 0.05). In conclusion, OA supplementation alleviated the inflammatory response and reduced diarrhea incidence in piglets challenged with ETEC. However, no further improvements were observed when OA supplemented with CRA or probiotics

    Inflammatory immune response plays a key role in exercise-induced injury and healing; however, the relevant regulatory mechanisms of immune infiltration in exercise-induced injuries remain less studied. In the present study, a highly efficient system for screening immunity-related biomarkers and immunomodulatory ability of natural nutritional supplements was developed by integrating intelligent data acquisition, data mining, network pharmacology, and computer-assisted target fishing. The findings demonstrated that resting natural killer cells showed a higher rate of infiltration after exercise, whereas naive B cells and activated dendritic cells showed higher rate of infiltration before exercise. Four key genes, namely PRF1, GZMB, CCL4, and FASLG, were associated with exercise-induced injuries and inflammatory immune response. In total, 26 natural compounds including echinacoside, eugenol, tocopherol, and casuariin were predicted by using the HERB databases. Molecular docking analysis showed that GZMB, FASLG, and CCL4 bound to echinacoside. In vivo experiments in mice showed that after 30 min swimming, natural killer (NK) cells showed high infiltration rates, and the key genes (GZMB, PRF1, FASLG, and CCL4) were highly expressed; however, echinocandin significantly reduced the level of NK cells and decreased the expression of the four key genes post exercise. This natural nutritional supplement may act to protect against inflammatory injury after exercise by suppressing specific immune infiltration.</p
