    Application of starch degrading bacteria from tobacco leaves in improving the flavor of flue-cured tobacco

    Starch is an essential factor affecting the quality of flue-cured tobacco, and high starch content can affect the sensory quality and safety. Recently, the degradation of macromolecules in tobacco raw materials by using additional microorganisms to improve their intrinsic quality and safety has become a new research hotspot in the tobacco industry. However, the technical maturity and application scale are limited. Our study analyzed the correlation between microbial community composition and volatile components on the surface of tobacco leaves from 14 different grades in Fujian tobacco-producing areas. The PICRUSt software was utilized to predict the function of the microbial community present in tobacco leaves. Furthermore, dominant strains that produced amylase were screened out, and an enzyme solution was prepared to enhance the flue-cured tobacco flavor. Changes in the content of macromolecules and volatile components were determined, and sensory evaluations were conducted to assess the overall quality of the tobacco leaves. The results showed that the dominant bacterial genera on the surface of Fujian tobacco leaves were Variovorax, Sphingomonas, Bacillus, etc. Bacillus was positively correlated with various volatile components, which contributed to the sweet and aromatic flavors of Fujian flue-cured tobacco. The main genetic functions of Fujian flue-cured tobacco surface bacteria were carbohydrate metabolism and amino acid metabolism. After treating flue-cured tobacco with an enzyme preparation prepared by the fermentation of Paenibacillus amylolyticus A17 #, the content of starch, pectin, and cellulose in flue-cured tobacco decreased significantly compared with the control group. Meanwhile, the content of total soluble sugar and reducing sugar was significantly increased, and the volatile aroma components, such as 3-hydroxy--damascone, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4 H-Pyran-4-one, ethyl palmitate, ethyl linolenic acid, etc., were significantly increased. The aroma quality and quantity of flue-cured tobacco were enhanced, while impurities were reduced. The smoke characteristics were improved, with increased fineness, concentration, and moderate strength. The taste characteristics were also improved, with reduced irritation and a better aftertaste. In conclusion, Bacillus, as the dominant genus in the abundance of bacterial communities on tobacco surfaces in Fujian, had an essential impact on the flavor of tobacco leaves by participating in carbohydrate metabolism and finally forming the unique flavor style of flue-cured tobacco in Fujian tobacco-producing areas. Paenibacillus amylolyticus A17 #, a target strain with amylase-producing ability, was screened from the surface of Fujian flue-cured tobacco. The enzyme preparation, produced by the fermentation of Paenibacillus amylolyticus A17 #, was utilized to reduce the content of macromolecules, increase the content of water-soluble total sugar and reducing sugar, and produce a variety of crucial volatile aroma components, which had a significant improvement on the quality of tobacco leaves

    A Multi-Period Framework for Coordinated Dispatch of Plug-in Electric Vehicles

    Coordinated dispatch of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) with renewable energies has been proposed in recent years. However, it is difficult to achieve effective PEV dispatch with a win-win result, which not only optimizes power system operation, but also satisfies the requirements of PEV owners. In this paper, a multi-period PEV dispatch framework, combining day-ahead dispatch with real-time dispatch, is proposed. On the one hand, the day-ahead dispatch is used to make full use of wind power and minimize the fluctuation of total power in the distribution system, and schedule the charging/discharging power of PEV stations for each period. On the other hand, the real-time dispatch arranges individual PEVs to meet the charging/discharging power demands of PEV stations given by the day-ahead dispatch. To reduce the dimensions of the resulting large-scale, non-convex problem, PEVs are clustered according to their travel information. An interval optimization model is introduced to obtain the problem solution of the day-ahead dispatch. For the real-time dispatch, a priority-ordering method is developed to satisfy the requirements of PEV owners with fast response. Numerical studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented framework

    Investigation of var compensation schemes in unbalanced distribution systems

    Distributed rooftop photovoltaic (PV) generators prospered distributed generation (DG) in recent years. Certain randomness of rooftop PV connection may lead to significant PV power imbalance across three phases, especially in low-voltage distribution systems. Due to interphase line coupling, traditional Var compensation methods which typically have competent voltage regulation performance may become less effective in such PV imbalance scenarios. In this paper, the limitation of traditional Var compensation methods in voltage regulation with unbalanced PV power integration is demonstrated and comprehensively analyzed. After describing the voltage regulation challenge, based on the voltage sensitivity analysis, it is revealed that PV power unbalanced level together with equivalent mutual impedance among phase conductors has a significant impact on the effectiveness of traditional Var compensation methods on voltage regulation. On this basis, to improve the performance of voltage regulation methods, some suggestions are proposed for both current system operation and future distribution system planning. Numerical studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed suggestions. Future rooftop PV integration in LV systems can benefit from this research

    Impacts of alternative energy production innovation on reducing CO2 emissions: Evidence from China

    Although environmental economics research explores the impacts of green innovation on reducing CO2 emissions, most studies ignore these effects in emerging economies. This paper examines how alternative energy production innovation (AEPI) reduces CO2 emissions. Using a sample of 30 provinces in China during the 1997–2017 period, we find AEPI is negatively related to CO2 emissions. Specifically, the results show that innovations in raw coal and crude oil are negatively related to CO2 emissions, while innovations in natural gas are positively related to CO2 emissions. This study contributes to research on technological innovation and environmental economics. First, we find AEPI as the main driver of all types of green innovation in reducing CO2 emissions. Second, we explore the heterogeneous effects of different energy sources and deepen our understanding of different reduction mechanisms. Third, this study makes a methodological contribution to research using a series of quantitative analyses

    The value of pupillary diameter in evaluating pain perception after awakening in patients undergoing general anesthesia during orthopedic surgery

    Abstract Background The pupillary response to tetanic electrical stimulation reflects the balance between nociceptive stimulation and analgesia. Although pupillary pain index (PPI) was utilized to predict postoperative pain, it depended on tetanic stimulation and was complex. We aim to describe the potential relationship between PD in the presence of surgical stimulation and pain levels after awakening. Methods According to the Verbal Rating Scale (VRS) score after extubation, the patients were divided into painless group (VRS = 0) and pain group (VRS ≥ 1). Pupillary diameter (PD) and pupillary light reflex velocity (PLRV) were compared between two groups when patients entered the operating room (T1), before incision (T2), 10 s after incision (T3), 30 s after incision (T4), 1 h after incision (T5), at the end of surgery (T6), shortly after extubation (T7), and when patients expressed pain clearly (T8). The magnitude of PD change (ΔPD) compared to the baseline value after anesthesia induction (T2) was calculated. The correlations between pupillary parameters and pain after awakening were calculated. Results Patients with VRS ≥ 1 had greater PD than painless patients at T3-7 (P = 0.04, 0.04, 0.003, <0.001, <0.001), and it was positively correlated with VRS score after awakening at T4-7 (r = 0.188, 0.217, 0.684, 0.721). The ability of T6ΔPD to predict VRS ≥ 1 was strong [threshold: 20.53%, area under the curve (AUC): 0.93, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.89–0.97 ]. Conclusion Our study indicates that PD is a useful index to direct the individualized analgesics used during operation, to better avoid the occurrence of pain during the postoperative emergence period.     Seat Selection as a Function of Cultural and Individual Differences: Insights from Undergraduate Students in China

    Students’ seating selection is a significant physical variable that has implications for both teachers and students. These seating preferences have been linked to students’ personalities, motivation, and academic performance. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the cultural influences on these preferences. In this exploratory qualitative study, we aim to investigate the cultural factors that influence the seating choices of undergraduate students. The study participants were recruited using purposive sampling. Face-to-face interviews and scenario simulation surveys were utilized to collect data, which was analyzed using thematic analysis. The study’s findings suggest that seating preferences are largely a function of individual differences and personal preferences, which often stem from personal and cultural factors. These factors are discussed under five primary themes: course academic value, gaining positive experiences, avoiding negative experiences, modesty and humility, and social belonging. These findings have implications for teaching and learning and for instructors, especially those from foreign cultures
