Degradation of contaminants of emerging concern by UV/H2O2 for water reuse: Kinetics, mechanisms, and cytotoxicity analysis.
Advanced oxidation using UV and hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2) has been widely applied to degrade contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in wastewater for water reuse. This study investigated the degradation kinetics of mixed CECs by UV/H2O2 under variable H2O2 doses, including bisphenol A, estrone, diclofenac, ibuprofen, and triclosan. Reverse osmosis (RO) treated water samples from Orange County Water District's Groundwater Replenishment System (GWRS) potable reuse project were collected on different dates and utilized as reaction matrices with spiked additions of chemicals (CECs and H2O2) to assess the application of UV/H2O2. Possible degradation pathways of selected CECs were proposed based on high resolution mass spectrometry identification of transformation products (TPs). Toxicity assessments included cytotoxicity, aryl hydrocarbon receptor-binding activity, and estrogen receptor-binding activity, in order to evaluate potential environmental impacts resulting from CEC degradation by UV/H2O2. Cytotoxicity and estrogenic activity were significantly reduced during the degradation of mixed CECs in Milli-Q water by UV/H2O2 with high UV fluence (3200Β mJΒ cm-2). However, in GWRS RO-treated water samples collected in April 2017, the cytotoxicity and estrogen activity of spiked CEC-mixture after UV/H2O2 treatment were not significantly eliminated; this might be due to the high concentration of target CEC and their TPs, which was possibly affected by the varied quality of the secondary treatment influent at this facility such as sewer-shed and wastewater discharges. This study aimed to provide insight on the impacts of post-UV/H2O2 CECs and TPs on human and ecological health at cellular level
THE EARLY-MIDDLE PALEOZOIC VOLCANISM AND GEODYNAMIC EVOLUTION OF THE HERLEN MASSIF, CENTRAL PART OF THE CAOB: CONSTRAINS FROM GEOCHEMISTRY, U-PB GEOCHRONOLOGY, LU-HF AND RB-SR ISOTOPES OF VOLCANIC ROCKS
Mongolia lies in the central part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt [Mossakovsky et al., 1994; Zorin, 1999; Jahn, 2004; Khain et al., 2003; Badarch et al., 2002; Windley et al., 2007; Zhang et al, 2008], or Altaids [ΕengΓΆr et al., 1993; ΕengΓΆr, Natalβin, 1996; Wilhem et al., 2012], which is fringed by the Siberian craton in the north and by the Tarim and Sino-Korean Cratons in the south. According to the recent tectonic subdivision, the territory of Mongolia is subdivided into Northern and Southern domains which are separated by the so called Mid Mongolian Tectonic Line [Tomurtogoo, 2012]. The Herlen Massif is one of the important tectonic units of the South Mongolian domain in the Argun-Idermeg super terrane extending through the territories of Russia and China [Parfenov et al., 2009; Tomurtogoo, 2014b]. The Herlen massif, also known as Herlen superterrane [Tomurtogoo, 2012] or Idermeg terrane [Tomurtogoo, 2014a] is composed of Ereendavaa, Undur-Khaan, Idermeg and Gobian Altay-Baruun Urt terranes converged at the end of the Cambrianbeginning of the Ordovician [Badarch et al., 2002; Tomurtogoo, 2014b].Mongolia lies in the central part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt [Mossakovsky et al., 1994; Zorin, 1999; Jahn, 2004; Khain et al., 2003; Badarch et al., 2002; Windley et al., 2007; Zhang et al, 2008], or Altaids [ΕengΓΆr et al., 1993; ΕengΓΆr, Natalβin, 1996; Wilhem et al., 2012], which is fringed by the Siberian craton in the north and by the Tarim and Sino-Korean Cratons in the south. Visual identification of gut bacteria and determination of natural inhibitors using a fluorescent probe selective for PGP-1
PGP-1 is a bacterial hydrolase that can hydrolyze the amide bond of the L-pyroglutamate (L-pGlu) residue at the amino terminus of proteins and peptides. Guided by the biological function of PGP-1, an off-on NIR fluorescent probe DDPA was developed for the visual sensing of PGP-1 by conjugating pyroglutamic acid (recognition group) and DDAN (fluorophore). Using intestinal bacteria cultivation, eight bacteria strains with active PGP-1 were identified and cultivated efficiently using DDPA. In addition, three natural inhibitors against PGP-1 were isolated from the medical herb Psoralea corylifolia, which could be used to interfere with bacterial metabolism in the gut. As such, the fluorescent probe DDPA provides an efficient method and potential tool for the investigation of intestinal microbiota.</p

Unusual competition of superconductivity and charge-density-wave state in a compressed topological kagome metal
Understanding the competition between superconductivity and other ordered
states (such as antiferromagnetic or charge-density-wave (CDW) state) is a
central issue in condensed matter physics. The recently discovered layered
kagome metal AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, and Cs) provides us a new playground to study
the interplay of superconductivity and CDW state by involving nontrivial
topology of band structures. Here, we conduct high-pressure electrical
transport and magnetic susceptibility measurements to study CsV3Sb5 with the
highest Tc of 2.7 K in AV3Sb5 family. While the CDW transition is monotonically
suppressed by pressure, superconductivity is enhanced with increasing pressure
up to P1~0.7 GPa, then an unexpected suppression on superconductivity happens
until pressure around 1.1 GPa, after that, Tc is enhanced with increasing
pressure again. The CDW is completely suppressed at a critical pressure P2~2
GPa together with a maximum Tc of about 8 K. In contrast to a common dome-like
behavior, the pressure-dependent Tc shows an unexpected double-peak behavior.
The unusual suppression of Tc at P1 is concomitant with the rapidly damping of
quantum oscillations, sudden enhancement of the residual resistivity and rapid
decrease of magnetoresistance. Our discoveries indicate an unusual competition
between superconductivity and CDW state in pressurized kagome lattice.Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure
Construction and immunological characterization of CD40L or GM-CSF incorporated Hantaan virus like particle
Infection of Hantaan virus (HTNV) usually causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). China has the worst epidemic incidence of HFRS as well as high fatality. Inactivated whole virus has been used for HFRS vaccination, however there are still problems such as safety concerns. CD40 ligand (CD40L) and granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) are well-known immune stimulating molecules that can enhance antigen presenting, lymphocytes activation and maturation, incorporation of CD40L and GM-CSF to the surface of virus like particles (VLPs) can greatly improve the vaccination effect. We constructed eukaryotic vectors expressing HTNV M segment and S segment, as well as vectors expressing HTNV M segment with CD40L or GM-CSF, our results showed successful production of CD40L or GM-CSF incorporated HTNV VLPs. In vitro stimulation with CD40L or GM-CSF anchored HTNV VLP showed enhanced activation of macrophages and DCs. CD40L/GM-CSF incorporated VLP can induce higher level of HTNV specific antibody and neutralizing antibody in mice. Immunized mice splenocytes showed higher ability of secreting IFN-Ξ³ and IL-2, as well as enhancing CTL activity. These results suggest CD40L/GM-CSF incorporated VLP can serve as prospective vaccine candidate
